Here's the next chapter. The Mage's Path chapter will be out tomorrow.
Chapter 94
Lucas stumbled as his boots hit solid ground, the familiar disorientation of Dante's teleportation fading quickly.
He checked his surroundings. Behind them stretched the Great Marsh—Sinnoh's sprawling wetland preserve. The air hung thick with humidity and the earthy scent of decomposing vegetation. In the other direction was Pastoria City.
He was exposed, out in the open. Lucas quickly hid behind a massive oak tree on the side of the road. Through the gaps between the branches, he observed the city entrance.
Four figures in white uniforms stood at attention beside the gate. Church Knights. Lucas counted several more patrolling the perimeter. It looked like the city was on lockdown as well.
Dante vanished and reappeared a moment later with Sabrina.
"How do you want to play this?" Lucas asked. "Should we capture one of the knights and interrogate them? See where Azelf is hiding?"
Sabrina brushed a strand of hair from her face, her expression thoughtful. "It's probably in Jubilife City. It's the capital of Sinnoh, and where the main church headquarters is."
"Why didn't you teleport us there directly?" Lucas asked Dante.
The Gardevoir shot him a look that conveyed exactly how stupid the question was.
"Right." Lucas rubbed the back of his neck. "Might attract Azelf's attention. Better not to start a fight from the outset when we don't know where Delia and the kids are being kept."
“I thought our goal was to anger him,” Sabrina said. “To draw him out.”
“I would rather avoid that option unless absolutely necessary. We don’t know how it will react. It may kill its hostages before confronting us.”
“Do you really think Raijin can fight Azelf?”
“I don’t know. Raijin is lacking in experience compared to Azelf, if not in raw strength. It's been some time, but I recall Azelf having incredible stats due to its level. The only real advantage is that it doesn't gain a boost from its bond with Arceus.”
Sabrina frowned. “He should be able to hold his own for a while, at least. Why didn’t you ask Mew for help?”
"Owe Mew another favour?" Lucas scoffed. "The last one is already giving me a major headache."
They fell silent as they continued to observe the knights patrolling the outskirts of the city.
"Interrogating one of the knights isn't a bad idea," Sabrina said. "We need information on the current situation within the region."
"If all the churches have withdrawn from the other regions, that means all their forces are concentrated in Sinnoh." Lucas frowned. “If we attract too much attention, we'll have thousands of Church Knights coming after us."
“What do the locals think about the situation? Do you think they'll help us?"
"Hard to say. Because of the church's influence, Sinnoh tends to have the most devoted members. But I can't imagine everyone is happy with the current situation." Lucas turned to Dante. "Can you teleport us into the city?"
Dante nodded.
"Good. First, let me establish a Secret Base," Lucas said. "We need a place to fall back to in case things go south. Then, we can enter the city and get the lay of the land."
Lucas retrieved the Secret Base kit from his inventory. They retreated into the Great Marsh, squelching through muddy terrain until they found a small hill rising from the wetland. He activated the kit. Within seconds, it had carved out a concealed entrance in the hillside.
They entered briefly, allowing Dante to memorise the location before he grasped both their hands. The world dissolved.
They appeared in a small park in Pastoria's city centre. A fountain bubbled quietly nearby, but no children played nearby. No families enjoyed picnics on the grass. The place felt abandoned despite the daylight hours.
Lucas returned Dante to his pokeball.
"Our faces are too well-known." He retrieved two face-changing potions from his inventory.
Sabrina accepted the potion. The effect began immediately—her facial features shifting like clay in an artist's hands. Her nose became more angular, her cheekbones less pronounced, and her jawline softened. Within moments, she looked like a stranger.
Lucas frowned.
Sabrina noticed his expression. "What's the matter?"
"I don't like it." He shook his head. "It's like desecrating a piece of fine art."
"Can you be serious?"
Lucas applied his face-changing potion. The familiar sensation washed over him as his features rearranged themselves. He'd used this transformation enough times to know exactly how he appeared. The potion only provided one unique appearance for each individual.
He pulled a black cap from his inventory and handed it to Sabrina. She gathered her distinctive purple hair, tucking the long strands up and under the hat until every lock remained hidden.
"Where should we go first?" Sabrina asked.
"Let's head for the gym. Wherever it is."
"Let's find an information centre with a map of the city."
"Why not ask one of the locals?"
"And make it obvious we aren't locals?"
They left the park and began exploring Pastoria's streets. The city's layout followed a logical grid pattern, with wide boulevards connecting residential districts to commercial areas. Victorian-style architecture dominated the older sections, while newer buildings incorporated modern materials and designs.
The Church Knights were present on every street. Lucas counted at least twenty knights within their first few blocks of exploration. Citizens hurried past with downcast eyes. Conversations remained muted, and people avoided lingering in groups. The atmosphere reeked of fear and oppression.
"These knights are strutting around like they own the place," Lucas said. "Pisses me off."
"Will you keep it down?" Sabrina grabbed his arm. "I don't want them to overhear you."
They found an information kiosk with detailed maps of Pastoria City. Lucas studied the layout until he'd memorised the route to their destination. Pastoria Gym was located on the city’s eastern edge.
Lucas pulled out his phone as they walked. "The internet is still working."
"That will likely change soon." Sabrina glanced at a passing knight patrol. "If the church wants to control the region, shutting off access to the outside is one of the first things they'll do."
Lucas nodded and continued his research. According to the official League database, Pastoria Gym specialised in Water-type Pokemon. The facility boasted an elaborate indoor pool system with a series of water puzzles designed to challenge trainers before they could reach the Gym Leader.
Crasher Wake—the gym's current leader—commanded a team of powerful Water-types, all trained to levels exceeding seventy. His signature Pokemon included a Floatzel and a battle-hardened Quagsire. Wake himself had earned recognition as one of Sinnoh's Elite Four candidates before choosing to remain a Gym Leader.
They turned another corner, and the gym came into view. The building resembled a massive aquarium more than a traditional gym, with glass walls revealing the intricate pool system within.
But something was wrong. Church Knights surrounded the building.
As they were discussing their next move, glass exploded outward as a white-armoured figure crashed through one of the gym's windows. The knight hit the pavement hard. From inside the building came the sound of battle—Pokemon cries, splashing water, and shouted commands.
"What's that all about?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know. Let's check it out."
The remaining knights abandoned their posts and rushed to enter the building. Lucas and Sabrina sprinted to the broken window and peered inside, only to witness carnage.
The gym's interior had been transformed into a battlefield. Floating platforms bobbed across the massive swimming pool's surface, connected by narrow bridges that swayed with each impact. Water cascaded from damaged pipes, turning sections of the arena into treacherous rapids.
Crasher Wake stood atop the central platform. His signature orange and blue wetsuit stretched across his broad shoulders as he grappled with a Church Knight, using a perfect suplex to send the armoured figure plummeting into the water below.
"Stay down, you mongrels!" Wake bellowed.
His Pokemon fought with equal fury across the floating arena. A m Floatzel bounded between platforms with incredible agility, its twin tails spinning like propellers. The Pokemon caught a leaping Espeon mid-air, slamming it down with a devastating Aqua Tail.
Wake's Gyarados dominated the pool's deeper sections, facing a Sylveon. The fairy-type's ribbons fluttered desperately as Gyarados applied crushing pressure with Wrap. Nearby, a scarred Quagsire traded blows with an Altaria, its bulky frame absorbing attacks whilst retaliating with a devastating Body Slam that made the platform tremble.
Wake caught another knight in a devastating clothesline, his wrestling background evident in every movement. The man's raw physical power complemented his Pokemon's aquatic superiority perfectly. Despite the knights' numerical advantage, Crasher and his team were winning. Water-types thrived in this environment, and he proved effective at taking down human opponents.
Then everything changed.
Two knights entered through a doorway at the pool's far end. Between them struggled a blue-haired woman and a little girl, both held with knives pressed to their throats. The woman wore a simple dress soaked with pool spray, whilst the child—no more than seven years old—whimpered in terror.
Crasher's head snapped toward the hostages. His face went white beneath his theatrical makeup.
"No," he breathed.
His Pokemon immediately disengaged from their opponents, retreating to his side.
"Let them go, you punks!" Wake roared.
The knight holding the woman pressed his blade closer to her throat. A thin line of blood appeared. "Stand down, or we'll slit their throats."
"What a bunch of assholes," Lucas whispered.
"Now would be a good time to intervene," Sabrina said.
"What about keeping a low profile?"
"Can you stand to watch and do nothing?"
Lucas didn't answer. Instead, he retrieved Dante’s pokeball and activated the Pokemon’s stealth summoning ability. Dante materialised beside him, invisible to everyone else in the room.
"Take them out," Lucas pointed at the two knights holding the hostages.
Dante vanished, teleporting directly behind the hostage-takers. Both knights collapsed instantly, their bodies convulsing as Confusion attacks scrambled their nervous systems. The knives clattered harmlessly to the ground.
Dante's invisibility wore off, revealing the Gardevoir to everyone present.
"Where did he come from?" One of the remaining knights spun around.
Crasher's head turned toward the broken window, his eyes locking onto Lucas and Sabrina. Several knights and their Pokemon followed his gaze, all attention now focused on the two interlopers.
"Damn it." Lucas sighed. "They noticed us."
He raised his voice, calling across the gym. "Dante, get the woman and child out of here!"
Dante grabbed both hostages, his teleportation whisking them to safety in the blink of an eye.
"I don't know who you are," Crasher called out, "but thanks for the assist. Now, let's mop up these vermin!"
Lucas and Sabrina released their Pokemon simultaneously and joined the battle. The battle ended quickly. The knights' Pokemon were outmatched. Within minutes, the last Pokemon fell to Quagsire's Mud Bomb, unconscious before it hit the water. Sabrina levitated two knights and slammed them into the gym's walls with bone-crushing force. Their unconscious forms slumped to the ground.
Lucas winced at her brutality.
Crasher pointed at Sabrina. "I know who you are. You're the former psychic gym leader from Saffron City."
"Are you sure?" Lucas asked. "She doesn't look anything like her."
"Can you think of anyone else who has psychic powers like that?"
"You had to give yourself away," Lucas said to Sabrina.
"I was angry. Using a mother and her child as hostages like that."
Lucas turned back to Crasher. "If you recognise Sabrina, then you must know who I am."
"Not a clue."
Sabrina snorted out a laugh.
"I'm almost offended," Lucas said. "But I suppose I look less handsome than my usual appearance."
Crasher grinned. "I'm kidding. Everyone knows that you two are joined at the hip. What happened to your faces?"
"We're going incognito."
"If you say so. Where did you take my family?"
Dante reappeared beside Crasher, the woman and child materialising with him. The family rushed together, embracing, whilst Lucas and Sabrina surveyed the unconscious knights scattered around the pool area.
"How are we going to clean up this mess?" Lucas frowned. "The commotion may draw more knights to the gym."
"Drown them in the pool?" Sabrina suggested.
"Have you been taking lessons from Bree?" Lucas shook his head. "First, let's return the knights' Pokemon to their pokeballs."
Crasher and his family helped collect the unconscious opponents. His Pokemon dragged the knights themselves into a storage room beside the pool area. After everything had been cleaned up, Crasher introduced his wife and daughter.
"The knights were getting too arrogant," Crasher said. "Had to teach them a lesson."
"Well, you certainly did that," Lucas replied. "But what does this mean for the rest of the city? The knights aren't going to sit idly by."
Crasher shook his fist. "I'm sick of the church abusing my citizens. I'm taking this city back."
"How are you going to achieve that?" Sabrina asked.
"I have a lot of friends who feel the same. Between us, we have more than enough to kick them out of our city."
"That's a stupid plan," Lucas said. "They'll bring even more knights to take back the city. You can't fight them all."
"No. But if the other cities hear about our resistance, then they will rise up and fight our oppressors."
"Are you sure they'll fight?" Sabrina crossed her arms. "How many are loyal to the church?"
"Not as loyal as you might think, especially considering the church's recent actions."
Lucas pointed toward Crasher's family. "What about your wife and child? How are you going to protect them?"
"Can you help with that? I’m not sure how your Gardevoir can teleport without the towers, but it’s definitely handy.”
Lucas sighed. "I can help. But Sabrina and I can't reveal ourselves. The church has kidnapped our friends, and we don't want them to find out we're here yet.”
"I get you." Crasher struck a dramatic pose. "Now, let's take back the city! Revolution!"
His daughter clapped as her father flexed.
“Is everything going to be alright?” Sabrina eyed Crasher doubtfully.
Lucas shrugged. “Let’s put it this way. The citizens should be relatively safe. Azelf can't just indiscriminately kill everyone and lose all the remaining followers it has left.”
“That’s not reassuring at all. Why do I feel like we’re overlooking something?”
“Are your psychic senses tingling?”
“Maybe. Let's watch Crasher reclaim his city. We'll see soon enough if I'm just imagining things.”
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Crasher moved like a man possessed. Word spread through Pastoria's underground networks with remarkable speed—the gym leader had openly defied the Church Knights, and resistance was gathering momentum. Small groups began converging on predetermined meeting points throughout the city.
Lucas and Sabrina observed from the sidelines as Crasher's allies emerged from hiding. Former trainers, local business owners, police officers, Rangers, and some younger trainers who had grown tired of the oppressive atmosphere.
The actual confrontation unfolded swiftly. The Church Knights were overwhelmed by coordinated ambushes across the city, throwing the streets into chaos. Most knights surrendered without excessive resistance once they realised the scope of the uprising. They weren’t prepared for a city-wide rebellion. Within three hours, the last holdouts had been rounded up and secured in the city's detention facilities.
Citizens emerged onto the streets as news of the knights' defeat spread. The atmosphere shifted from oppressive fear to cautious celebration. A makeshift stage appeared in the city's central square. Someone had procured a sound system, and upbeat music began playing.
The crowd swelled as evening approached. Hundreds of citizens gathered in the square, their faces reflecting a mixture of relief, excitement, and lingering apprehension. Street vendors appeared with food and drinks, transforming the gathering into an impromptu festival.
Lucas and Sabrina weaved through the celebrants.
"This feels too easy," Sabrina said, her eyes scanning the crowd.
Sabrina's discomfort grew more pronounced as the celebration continued. She kept glancing skyward, her psychic senses detecting something beyond normal perception.
Her brows furrowed. "Something's wrong. I can sense it building."
"What kind of something?" Lucas asked.
"I don't know. But whatever it is, it's coming."
The crowd began chanting Crasher's name, demanding their liberator address them. Someone produced a crate of beer, and bottles were passed through the gathering.
Crasher climbed onto the stage, beer bottle in hand, grinning broadly at the assembled citizens. The crowd erupted in cheers, whistles, and applause. He raised his free hand for silence, preparing to speak.
His mouth opened, but no words emerged. Instead, his gaze drifted upward, and his expression shifted to one of confusion, then alarm. The beer bottle slipped from his fingers, shattering on the stage floor.
Lucas followed Crasher's stare, his stomach clenching as he spotted a small form approaching through the evening sky. At first glance, the silhouette resembled Azelf. But as the figure drew closer, distinct differences became apparent.
This Pokemon was smaller than Azelf, with a pink and white colouration. Two long tails trailed behind it, each tipped with a red gemstone that pulsed with inner light. Its head was proportionally larger than its compact body, and delicate, fairy-like wings carried it through the air with graceful movements.
"It's Mesprit," Sabrina said.
"What?" Lucas couldn't hide his surprise. "The last of the lake guardian Pokemon? Where did it come from?"
"I don't know. It hasn't been seen since the war. Right after the church was founded. It's known as the Being of Emotion."
Something about her words triggered a thought in Lucas's mind, but the connection slipped away before he could grasp it. A vague sense of foreboding settled over him.
The crowd noticed the approaching Pokemon. Some people froze in place, uncertain how to react. Others waved enthusiastically. A few individuals began backing away, their instincts warning them of danger.
The last reaction proved correct.
Mesprit stopped its descent, hovering roughly fifty metres above the square. The position placed it beyond the range of Lucas's passive Insight ability, preventing him from gauging its level. For several seconds, the legendary Pokemon remained motionless, surveying the gathering below.
Then massive waves of psychic energy began radiating outward from Mesprit's form.
The attack struck without warning. Lucas felt his mind becoming clouded, thoughts becoming sluggish and unfocused. A profound sense of respect and reverence for the church filled his consciousness—not his feelings, but artificial emotions being forced into his psyche.
Lucas shook his head violently, fighting against the invasive presence, struggling to maintain his mental barriers.
Sabrina grabbed his arm, shaking him forcefully. Her psychic abilities provided a resistance to Mesprit's influence, allowing her to break free more quickly. Her touch helped ground Lucas, giving him the focus needed to shatter the imposed emotions.
Clarity returned with jarring suddenness. Lucas gasped, taking a few unsteady steps before he managed to steady himself.
"What's going on?" he asked.
Looking around, he saw that the entire crowd had fallen into a trance-like state. Their faces displayed identical expressions of blank serenity. Even Crasher stood motionless on the stage, his eyes vacant and unfocused.
"We need to get out of here," Sabrina hissed. “Mesprit is brainwashing the entire crowd.”
Lucas nodded, but froze as every person in the square turned their heads towards them in perfect synchronisation. It was eerie as hell.
Some of the controlled citizens began releasing Pokemon. Others started running directly towards Lucas and Sabrina. The peaceful celebration had transformed into something far more sinister.
Lucas quickly summoned Dante and grabbed Gardevoir's arm. "Get us out of here!"
Dante attempted to teleport, his form flickering momentarily. But nothing happened. He shook his head frantically, indicating that his abilities weren't functioning.
Lucas didn't pause to question the failure. He grabbed Sabrina's hand and began running, pushing through the crowd as it converged on their position.
When the pursuers got too close, Sabrina used her telekinesis to push them backwards. They hit the ground and immediately got back up without expression, continuing their pursuit.
The controlled citizens weren't the main problem. Dozens of Pokemon had been released and were now chasing them through the city streets, both on the ground and in the sky.
Sabrina and Lucas released their Pokemon—everyone except Raijin—to provide cover during their escape.
They managed to lose the immediate threat by ducking into a narrow alley between two residential buildings. They pressed against the wall, breathing heavily from exertion.
Lucas looked up at the sky, where Mesprit continued hovering silently above the city centre. "Why is it doing nothing? Does Mesprit find this amusing?"
"Probably does," Sabrina replied. "I think it blocked Dante's ability to teleport."
"I figured. What are we going to do if Mesprit puts the entire city under its thrall?"
"The only option is to release Raijin."
A crash echoed from the alley's entrance. Their Pokemon pulled back through the narrow passage, with both ground and flying types retreating in a controlled formation. A wave of controlled Pokemon followed them.
Saphira arrived first, her massive form filling the alley. She created a localised updraft that lifted Lucas and Sabrina onto her back. As they rose into the air, both trainers managed to return their ground-based Pokemon to their pokeballs before they were overwhelmed.
Lucas left Icarus out to deal with the flying Pokemon that pursued them, while Sabrina kept Xavier, her Xatu, active in the air. She also resummoned Kasumi, her Alakazam, onto Saphira's back and began launching psychic attacks at their airborne pursuers.
Lucas reached for his Mega Bracelet and activated Icarus' transformation. The Pidgeot rapidly evolved into his Mega Form, releasing a powerful screech as his size and power increased dramatically. He immediately began engaging the flying Pokemon with renewed vigour.
"Alright," Lucas said, steadying himself on Saphira's back. "Time for the main event."
He released Raijin into the evening sky. The three-headed legendary immediately focused on Mesprit in the distance. Raijin released a screech from all three heads simultaneously and shot forward.
The Pokemon’s approach shattered Mesprit's concentration. The psychic waves emanating from the Being of Emotion faltered, and across the city, controlled citizens began blinking in confusion as their mental clarity returned.
Mesprit turned to face Raijin as the tri-elemental legendary arrived within striking distance.
The battle erupted with devastating intensity. Raijin's electric head discharged a massive Lightning Bolt, the energy tearing through the air towards Mesprit. The psychic-type teleported at the last second, reappearing behind Raijin and launching a Psychic attack.
The psychic energy slammed into Raijin's body. Raijin shook the attack off and spun mid-air, his water head releasing a pressurised Hydro Pulse that forced Mesprit to dodge again.
Mesprit launched a Future Sight attack, psychic energy gathering in the air above them before striking downward. Raijin barrel-rolled between the descending attacks, his three heads working independently to track Mesprit's movements.
The legendary Pokemon clashed directly above a shopping complex. Raijin's fire head breathed a stream of superheated flames while his electric head charged another Lightning Bolt. Mesprit countered with a massive Psychic attack, the collision of energies creating a shockwave that shattered windows throughout the building below.
Debris rained down as the structure's upper floors buckled. People who had regained their senses scattered from the area.
Mesprit teleported again, this time appearing directly beside Raijin. The Being of Emotion attempted to grab the legendary with psychic force, but Raijin's water head struck with Aqua Tail, the attack connecting solidly and sending Mesprit tumbling through the air.
The psychic-type recovered quickly, stabilising its flight and retaliating with Swift. The star-shaped projectiles homed in on Raijin from multiple angles, several connecting before the legendary could dodge completely.
Raijin's response was immediate and devastating. All three heads charged energy simultaneously—electric, fire, and water elements building to dangerous levels. The attacks launched together, creating Raijin's Tri-Strike attack.
The triple beam carved through the air towards Mesprit, who barely managed to teleport clear. The combined attack struck an office building instead, punching clean through the structure's central support columns. The building groaned ominously before collapsing in a cloud of dust and debris. More civilians fled the expanding danger zone as the battle continued overhead.
Mesprit attempted a different strategy, diving towards the city streets. Raijin pursued, the chase winding between buildings and through narrow spaces between structures. Mesprit's smaller size gave it an advantage in confined spaces, allowing sharper turns and quicker directional changes. Raijin struggled to match the precise manoeuvres, his larger form and three heads making navigation more difficult.
Mesprit suddenly reversed direction, charging directly at Raijin while building psychic energy. The Being of Emotion unleashed Psycho Cut, blades of concentrated mental force slicing through the air.
Raijin countered with Lightning Bolt, the electric energy meeting the psychic blades in mid-air. The collision created a spectacular light show, electricity and psychic force dancing together before dispersing.
The battle's momentum shifted constantly. Mesprit's superior manoeuvrability allowed it to land several attacks, but Raijin's raw power meant that even glancing blows dealt significant damage. Neither legendary could maintain a decisive advantage.
They clashed above the city's power plant, their combined attacks overloading the electrical systems. The lights went out across entire districts as the power grid failed. The darkness added an eerie quality to their battle, illuminated only by their energy attacks.
Raijin attempted to use the electrical infrastructure to his advantage, drawing power from the damaged transformers. The absorbed energy supercharged his Hydro Thunder, creating a massive discharge that lit up the night sky.
Mesprit barely avoided the attack, the blast instead striking a building, turning it into rubble instantly. The psychic legendary retaliated with its most powerful attack yet, forming a massive Psyshock that struck like physical projectiles.
The barrage hammered Raijin from multiple directions, several hits penetrating his defences. The tri-elemental legendary's flight became less stable, his three heads showing signs of fatigue and injury.
But Raijin kept fighting. Their battle carried them back towards the city centre, where Lucas and Sabrina watched from Saphira's back. Around them, the cityscape bore the scars of legendary combat—collapsed buildings, electrical fires, and debris strewn across the streets.
Citizens continued evacuating the danger zone, though many stopped to watch the spectacular battle overhead. Despite the destruction, there was something magnificent about witnessing two legendary Pokemon battling each other.
The battle was reaching its conclusion. Raijin was breathing hard, his three heads showing numerous injuries across his sleek form. Several deep gashes marked where Mesprit's psychic attacks had penetrated his defences. But the Being of Emotion wasn't in much better condition—its movements had become slower, and its psychic energy seemed dimmed.
Raijin screeched and flew forward one final time, pouring his remaining energy into a last desperate attack. All three heads charged energy, preparing for another Tri-Strike that would either end the battle or leave him completely vulnerable.
Before he could reach Mesprit, the psychic legendary vanished. The Pokemon had teleported away. They waited in breathless silence, but it didn’t return.
Lucas and Sabrina breathed a collective sigh of relief. They had managed to hold off Mesprit, though it hardly felt like a victory as they surveyed the widespread destruction below.
Buildings lay in ruins and debris covered entire city blocks. The celebration that had begun the evening had transformed into a disaster zone, though at least the citizens had regained their freedom.
Raijin returned to Saphira, his three heads drooping with exhaustion. Despite his injuries, there was satisfaction in his bearing—he had faced another legendary Pokemon and proven he could hold his own.
Lucas rubbed his three heads. “You did amazing. We would have been helpless without you.”
Raijin screeched.
"Take a break," Lucas said, returning Raijin to his pokeball.
He gripped the sphere tightly, studying the smooth surface with a deepening frown. He couldn't shake his concern about Raijin's condition. Those injuries looked serious.
Raijin hadn't been pushed to his absolute limits before. The problem was that legendary Pokemon were notoriously difficult to treat when injured. Standard healing methods were inadequate for Pokemon of their power level. He needed to find a solution quickly, or Raijin could be down for days or even weeks.
"Think it will come back?" Sabrina asked.
Lucas shook his head. "Not tonight. But this isn't over.”
"Did Azelf send Mesprit? Have they been working together?"
But Lucas wasn't listening. His jaw clenched as pieces clicked into place. "That bastard knew this would happen."
"Who?"
"Uxie. It was spouting bullshit about your psychic abilities being used to counter Azelf. I bet it was referring to Mesprit."
Sabrina considered this, her expression thoughtful. "Maybe. But where has Mesprit been all this time? Why appear now?"
"I don't know. But I understand how the church grew so quickly."
"What do you mean?"
"I always felt it was strange how easily the church gained so many followers," Lucas said. "Now, I'm suspecting Mesprit had a hand in it. Think about it. It's the Being of Emotion. It just demonstrated that it's capable of manipulating people's emotions on a large scale. What if people were fooled into joining the church?"
Sabrina's eyes widened. The idea wasn't far-fetched, especially after witnessing Mesprit's power firsthand. The way it had turned an entire crowd into mindless servants was permanently etched into their minds.
"Maybe," she said. "But Mesprit's manipulations require an active component. We saw that when Raijin broke everyone out of their trance."
"I don't know how it works," Lucas replied. "I wish I could have gotten close enough to use Insight on it."
Sabrina pointed down to where a crowd of people had gathered around a collapsed building. Debris from the battle lay scattered across the street, and the structure's facade had crumbled completely. "We need to help them. There have to be survivors who are still trapped."
Lucas followed her gaze. Throughout the battle, he'd been focused on the immediate threat of Mesprit. But he hadn't fully considered the collateral damage until now.
The destruction was extensive. Besides the collapsed building Sabrina had spotted, several other structures showed significant damage. The battle between two legendary Pokemon had transformed sections of Pastoria into a disaster zone.
"You're right," Lucas said. "We caused this mess. We should help clean it up."
Saphira descended towards the crowd gathered around the collapsed building. As they approached, Lucas could see the organised nature of the rescue effort. Citizens had formed human chains to pass rubble from hand to hand, clearing pathways into the structure. Others brought medical supplies and water for those who might be trapped inside.
Crasher Wake was there, his distinctive orange and blue wetsuit making him easy to spot among the volunteers. Despite the chaos of the evening, the gym leader had rallied his citizens to focus on helping each other. His natural leadership was evident as he coordinated the rescue efforts.
Saphira landed in a clear area near the building's perimeter. Lucas and Sabrina dismounted and approached the volunteers.
"What can we do to help?" Lucas called out to Crasher.
The gym leader looked up. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his hands were covered in dust and grime.
"We've got people trapped on the second floor," Crasher said. "The stairs collapsed, but we can hear voices."
Lucas nodded and released his team.
As he helped with the rescue efforts, his mind worked through the implications of what had just occurred. When he'd arrived in Sinnoh, he'd thought he was facing one legendary Pokemon. Azelf was dangerous enough on its own, but that assumption had been blown completely out of the water.
At least Mesprit would be incapacitated for a while. Having to face two legendaries at the same time sounded like a nightmare.
But that brought him to his most pressing concern. Raijin was his trump card against Azelf. The Pokemon on his team with the raw power necessary to stand toe-to-toe with the Being of Willpower. If he couldn't heal Raijin quickly, he wouldn't have any means of dealing with Azelf when the inevitable confrontation came. And that confrontation was no longer a matter of if, but when.
After they had freed the trapped people, Crasher approached him. "Great work. But the job is far from over. And we still need to worry about the knights."
Lucas nodded. "It's going to be a long night."
"Do you know where that other Pokemon came from?" Crasher asked. "It gave Mesprit a proper fight. Haven't seen anything like that before."
"No idea. It was fortuitous, though. We would have all been turned into mindless puppets if it hadn't appeared."
"That’s for certain," Crasher said. "The Pokemon had three heads, with different elements by the look of it. Never seen anything like it in all my years as a gym leader. Do you think it's a new legendary?"
"Either that, or an undiscovered one.”
"What should we call it?" Crasher asked. "The news reporters are going to want a name when they start covering this story. Can't just keep calling it 'the mysterious three-headed Pokemon.'"
"Primal.” Lucas grinned. "I just have a feeling that it fits."
So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Lucas confronts Azelf and gets some unexpected help.
Thanks for reading.
