Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 70

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. Ashe evolves and Sabrina regains her memories of the night her parents were murdered.

Chapter 70

Heat pressed down as Lucas picked his way across the rocky plateau. Sweat dampened his shirt, and his boots scraped against weathered stone.

The mountain dominated Cinnabar's skyline, its weathered flanks rising in stark tiers of grey and rust-coloured stone. Up close, the sheer scale of it stole Lucas's breath. The sun-baked rocks radiated heat waves that were far more intense than the coastal temperatures below.

He couldn’t explain the phenomenon. Maybe it was due to the presence of the fire-type Pokemon on the plateaus that the area was so unreasonably hot. As far as he knew, the volcano remained dormant.

His mind wandered to his last visit when he'd overheard that discussion between Blaine and Maxie. The gym leader had been concerned about the tremors affecting the island. Now he wondered if there was a connection to the unusual heat.

Lucas shook his head, pushing the thoughts aside. He'd had his fill of drama for the moment. He wanted to focus on himself without stumbling into another crisis.

He paused to take a swig from his water bottle, already half-empty despite the early hour. The dormant volcano's slopes stretched out before him in a series of broad stone shelves. Each plateau offered its challenges—hidden fissures that could swallow an unwary foot, treacherous scree slopes that shifted underfoot, and the dark mouths of caves that punctured the mountainside like wounds. Stubborn clusters of trees clung to life in the more sheltered spots, their stunted forms testament to the harsh conditions.

This was no place for casual hikers. One wrong step on this craggy wasteland could mean a twisted ankle—or worse.

It had been a week since Lucas and Sabrina returned to Viridian City, and a lot had happened since then. Uxie had returned after confronting Azelf, securing a promise to withdraw the church from the United Kanto region. Because of Azelf’s injury, Uxie had the upper hand when it came to negotiating. But promises, even between legendaries, didn't translate smoothly into human politics.

Shichiro's latest update painted a grim picture of the political landscape. Church hardliners rallied their supporters, while some politicians baulked at the change or had their own self-interests. Those opposed to the Rota alliance added their voices to the chaos, turning what should have been a straightforward expulsion into a bureaucratic nightmare. Each day brought new obstacles to building the coalition needed to pass the legislation.

Yet Shichiro maintained his determination. The Prime Minister worked endless hours, calling in favours and negotiating compromises. His hands were partly tied, unable to reveal Azelf's control over the church without risking retaliation from the legendary Pokemon. Still, he pressed forward, convinced he could drive the church from Kanto's borders.

The criminal investigation proved equally frustrating. Despite mounting evidence against Bishop Castor and his conspirators in the Rattata incident, the police hit wall after wall. Church officials closed ranks, documents vanished, and witnesses fell silent. Shichiro had grown resigned to the likelihood that no one would face charges.

"Sometimes," he'd told Lucas during their last call, "we have to settle for removing the threat, even if justice goes unserved."

At least Viridian City had recovered. The official announcement came yesterday—all traces of the mutant contagion were eliminated. Bree's brutally efficient solution, combined with the Aura Guardians' thorough sweeps, had contained the threat. Teams still combed the forest, but the immediate danger had passed.

Sabrina had been gone for almost a week now, beginning the delicate process of recovering her memories under Uxie's guidance. A week, the legendary had said. One week of carefully reconstructing what was lost, of knitting together fragments of her past. He'd wanted to support her through it, but she'd been adamant about facing this alone. At the very least, Bree accompanied her to make sure nothing went wrong.

If Sabrina was successful, then he would hear from her soon.

Butch had accompanied Sabrina after Lucas received permission from Queen Ilene. His manager would oversee the renovations to his new properties. The shop in Rota City required little work, but the farm was a different story. Demolishing the old structures and rebuilding from scratch wouldn't come cheap. Still, cutting corners wasn't an option if he wanted proper facilities for his breeding operation.

Max trudged beside him, fulfilling his usual role as Lucas’ defender. Ashe bounded ahead, her eight-tails swishing with enthusiasm. They were looking for fire-type Pokemon to meet the requirement for her bonus evolution.

"Seven down, three to go," Lucas said, checking his mobile. Another message from Butch lit up the screen—something about building permits in Rota. He'd deal with that later.

A flash of movement caught his eye. A Charmeleon basked on a sun-warmed rock, its tail flame burning bright against the grey stone. Lucas found it unusual that one of the starter Pokemon lived on the mountain. Should he catch it?

"Ready, Ashe?"

The Vulpix crouched, fire gathering around her muzzle. The Charmeleon's head snapped up, sensing the impending threat.

The ground shifted.

Lucas froze mid-step. A deep rumble rose from beneath the mountain, vibrating through the soles of his boots. Loose stones skittered across the plateau as the tremor intensified.

"Shields up!"

Max immediately formed a protective barrier over them. Lucas's aura shield sprang to life alongside it, creating a layered defence. The Charmeleon fled, scrambling for safer ground.

A massive boulder broke free above them, tumbling down the slope. It smashed against their combined shields, fracturing into smaller chunks. Max’s shield failed, but he immediately raised another one. He continued this process several times as more rocks rained down, battering their protective bubble.

Lucas grabbed Ashe, pulling her close as they crouched behind the shields. The quake reached its peak, making it impossible to keep their footing. Thirty seconds stretched into an eternity as the mountain shuddered around them.

When the tremor finally subsided, an eerie silence fell. Only the occasional plink of settling rocks broke the stillness. Lucas counted to three hundred in his head before lowering his barrier.

"Everyone alright?"

Max nodded, his shield flickering out. Ashe squirmed free of Lucas's grip, shaking the dust from her fur.

“What the hell is going on here?”

This wasn’t the first time he had experienced a tremor. It had happened the last time he came here, but it wasn’t as exciting.

Meowth appeared beside him, fur standing on end. "This mountain's about to blow its top!"

"It can't be that serious," Lucas said, though his tone lacked conviction. "Did you find any loot?"

"Plenty." Meowth's whiskers twitched. "Now can we scarper before the whole place comes down?"

"Just three more battles for Ashe. Then we'll check on the town."

Meowth glanced at the rubble. “I doubt it was as dangerous for them as it was for us.”

After Ashe dispatched the remaining fire-type Pokemon needed for her evolution, Lucas summoned Saphira. The flight down revealed a town in chaos—people gathered in anxious clusters, gesturing at the mountain looming above. There was no structural damage, but the fear was palpable. Blaine and Maxie were conspicuously absent.

Despite his earlier resolve not to get involved, he started asking around about the tremors. He discovered their frequency had increased, and the townspeople were becoming increasingly concerned. Blaine continued to offer meaningless platitudes and spent the rest of his time hiding from the town.

Lucas frowned, wondering what he should do. Getting an idea, he found a private spot and called for Salem.

“Banette!” Salem materialised, zipper-mouth stretched in its characteristic creepy grin.

Sabrina had been worried about leaving him unprotected, so she had Salem stay with him.

"Fancy playing detective?" Lucas lowered his voice. "The gym's somewhere inside that mountain. Have a poke around and see what you can find."

Salem's grin widened before he vanished.

Lucas withdrew the Fire Stone from his bag. This was the final requirement needed to evolve Ashe into Ninetales.

"Ready?" He held out the stone.

Ashe's eight tails swished with anticipation. She touched her nose to the stone's surface, and blinding light filled the room. Lucas shielded his eyes as energy crackled through the air, raising the hairs on his arms.

When the glow faded, a Ninetales stood before him. Nine magnificent tails fanned out behind her, tips glowing with ethereal flames. Her cream-coloured fur shimmered like silk, and those intelligent red eyes held centuries of ancient wisdom. Despite refusing the growth potion, she cut an imposing figure at three and a half feet tall, her body stretching over a metre in length.

"You're beautiful," Lucas whispered, kneeling beside her.

Ashe pressed her muzzle into his palm, her touch still gentle despite her newfound power. Up this close, he could see subtle streaks of gold running through her fur.

"You're so different from before. Like an old soul. I suppose that’s the nature of the Ninetales evolution."

WHAP! One of Ashe's tails caught him square across the face, sending him sprawling backwards.

"Maybe not so different after all," he muttered, rubbing his stinging cheek. Ashe's eyes sparkled with mischief, all nine tails swishing with satisfaction.

He used Insight to get a look at her new parameters.

Her new traits were certainly interesting. Although they didn’t sound practical. While it would be nice to receive help during battle, he didn’t like the randomness of it all, as it wasn’t something he could incorporate into his strategies.

As for the ability to curse someone, that had some scary implications. Just what would it take to piss off Ashe that she would sacrifice five levels to curse someone?

An hour later, Salem appeared beside Lucas, who sat at a table in his hotel room.

“Did you find anything?” Lucas asked.

Salem reached for a nearby pen. He used his energy to manipulate it and scratch some words on a piece of paper: Chamber past gym arena. Digging deep. Heat intense. Minor tremors every few minutes.

Lucas leant forward, studying the scrawled words. "Who's down there?"

More scratching: Blaine. Alone. Using Pokemon to dig. Looks desperate.

"No sign of Maxie?"

Salem shook his head.

Lucas drummed his fingers against the table. The situation reeked of trouble, but he lacked vital information. He considered contacting the authorities, but it would be his word against Blaine.

"Thanks, Salem. Keep an eye on things, but don't get too close."

Salem nodded before melting back into the shadows.

Lucas crossed to the bed where the Zapdos egg rested on a nest of cushions. The moment his fingers brushed its warm surface, a spark leapt between them—sharp and precise as a needle. Unlike normal static shocks that stung, this jolt carried purpose, more like a greeting than a warning. The connection resonated through his arm, leaving his fingertips tingling with residual energy.

"Bit eager today, aren't you?"

Another spark answered him, stronger this time. The egg had grown more responsive each day, its reactions increasingly deliberate. The reality of raising a legendary Pokemon still hadn't sunk in. Each morning brought a fresh wave of anxiety about how he would handle the situation. Would Zapdos even respond to his authority, or would it be beyond his control?

Lucas turned to his breeding records spread across the desk, papers weighted down by polished stones. Neat columns of data tracked forty-two Pokemon now, each one's progress meticulously documented. His latest Eevee hatching had brought the total to nine.

He wanted to build his Eeevee stocks up further, but it was about time he started to work on their evolutions. He planned to evolve one of them into Umbra first, which would greatly help his breeding business's reputation. On its own, it would attract a large number of people once it was revealed that he could replicate the results.

A familiar tingling sensation drew his attention back to his palm. Blue aura light danced across his skin, shot through with threads of electricity. The phenomenon had grown more frequent, his natural energy responding to the egg's influence. Each day the electric element grew stronger and more insistent.

Lucas concentrated, trying to shape the electrical energy like he would his normal aura. It sparked and fizzled, refusing to conform to his usual patterns. Static crackled between his fingers, raising the hair on his arms. The power held enormous potential—he'd seen that firsthand in Lysandre's fire manipulation—but mastering it was like trying to grab smoke.

The egg's influence on his aura had caught Lucas off guard. Each day, more electric energy threaded through his natural aura, altering its fundamental nature. He was uncertain whether to feel concern or excitement at this transformation.

The potential applications excited him. He could create new skills born from this fusion of powers. Even his existing skills might evolve—imagine an aura barrier that could shock attackers or projections that exploded when destroyed. The possibilities were endless.

His eyes fell on the alchemy setup tucked in the corner. A week of experimenting with the Electirizer potion had filled two notebooks with failures. He was beginning to think the task was impossible.

But, with his aura becoming more lightning-aligned, was there a way to change that? Could electricity be used as a catalyst to fundamentally alter the properties of the potion? The concept seemed absurd, but he would have to experiment to satisfy his curiosity.

He could already feel that the electricity wasn’t normal. It felt more tyrannical than usual, which could be because it came from a legendary Pokemon. Or maybe there was something else at work. Whatever the case, he would shelve the project for the moment until he adapted to the change in his aura.

Lucas' mobile buzzed, Shichiro's name flashing on the screen. He answered and was immediately blasted by an upset uncle.

"Do you have a death wish?"

Lucas nearly dropped the phone. "What the bloody hell are you on about?"

"Bree said that Sabrina's pregnant."

"That stupid doll," Lucas muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Killing me indirectly now, is she?"

"What?"

"It's just Bree playing games. Sabrina's not pregnant."

A heavy sigh whooshed through the line. "Well, I'm relieved I don't have to kill you."

"Would it really be the end of the world if she were?"

"You're not married."

“That’s your only objection? Well, I’m flattered.”

“Don’t be. It still baffles me that she ever fell for you."

Lucas grinned. “Would you like the details? It started when she—”

“I changed my mind. You’re a dead man.”

He noticed a pattern emerging with the Kuroi family. As usual, Sabrina was the best of the bunch. What would it take for her to threaten his life? Maybe it wasn’t the best idea for Sabrina to regain her psychic abilities.

"Did Sabrina pay you a visit? Is that how Bree told you?”

“No, Bree called me. Sabrina brought her a cell phone.”

Lucas paused, considering the potential damage a psychotic doll could cause with a cell phone. “Why the hell would she do that?”

“Beats me.”

Lucas sighed. "Was there a reason you called beyond grilling me about Sabrina expecting a non-existent baby?"

Silence stretched across the connection. Then: "Did you convince Sabrina to regain her psychic abilities?"

"No. I don't care either way if she regains them. What makes you think I had any say in the matter? Bree would murder me if she thought I was pushing Sabrina into anything."

"Right." Shichiro's voice softened. "I'm just concerned for her."

"I get that. I feel the same, but it's what she wants."

"I called for another reason," Shichiro said, his tone shifting. "Watch the evening news tonight."

"What's going on?"

"I don't want to ruin the surprise."

The line went dead before Lucas could respond. He stared at his phone, wondering what fresh chaos awaited on tonight's broadcast.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas sank into the worn sofa, the evening news flickering to life on the screen. Meowth curled beside him, claws kneading the cushion as the headline scrolled: 'MASS EXODUS: CHURCH OF ARCEUS ABANDONS KANTO.' Red text against black, urgent and stark.

The footage panned across abandoned churches—stained glass windows reflecting empty pews, collection boxes still containing yesterday's offerings. Prayer books lay open on lecterns, as if their readers had simply vanished mid-verse.

"Reports indicate church officials began departing late last night," the anchor's voice intoned. "By morning, every major church in United Kanto stood empty."

“This is a surprise,” Lucas said. “I didn’t think they would capitulate so easily.”

“Maybe their boss gave the order, Meowth.”

“That’s probably the case.”

Uxie's confrontation with Azelf must have carried more weight than he'd realised.

The scene cut to Professor Oak outside his laboratory. His expression remained grave as the reporter thrust a microphone towards his face.

"Professor Oak, why would the church abandon Kanto before the Prime Minister's bill even passes parliament?"

Oak stroked his chin. “They're bowing to the inevitable. Rather than face an unceremonious expulsion, they've chosen to leave on their own terms."

"Why do you think that is?" The reporter pressed. "The church still maintains considerable support despite the recent scandals. Many argue the Rattata incident wasn't their doing."

"Where there's smoke, there's fire. Whatever their reasons for leaving, I'm glad they're gone. Perhaps now we can progress without their interference."

The broadcast shifted to international coverage. A montage of government buildings filled the screen—Hoenn, Saffron, Unova, Kalos, and Galar. Each region's leader offered carefully crafted responses.

"Hoenn remains neutral on church matters,” the Hoenn Prime Minister said. “We'll continue monitoring the situation."

Galar's leader addressed parliament from behind an ornate wooden podium, her clipped accent echoing through the historic chamber. "The Crown will observe these developments with appropriate discretion."

Unova's leader, sharp in his business suit, cited "ongoing internal discussions" while shuffling papers on his desk.

Only Kalos showed real backbone. Their prime minister's eyes flashed behind his glasses. "Recent events warrant investigation. We'll be reviewing the church's position within our borders."

The Sinnoh segment proved the most revealing. Their prime minister's face flushed dark red as he defended the church, fist-pounding his podium. "These baseless attacks must stop. The Church of Arceus remains a cornerstone of our society, a beacon of morality and tradition. This madness in Kanto cannot be allowed to spread."

"Not surprising," Meowth muttered. "The church's hooks run deep there."

“That’s not our problem. So long as they are gone from Kanto.”

Sabrina twisted in her sleep, sweat beading on her forehead as the memory dragged her back through time. She was eight again, padding down the dark hallway in her pink cotton nightgown. Her bare feet made soft sounds against the wooden floor, each step bringing her closer to the noise that had woken her. The house felt different at night—familiar shapes transformed into looming shadows by moonlight filtering through the windows.

The sound of fighting grew louder—crashes and thuds punctuated by muffled voices. A vase shattered somewhere ahead.

A woman's scream pierced the silence. The sound hit Sabrina like a physical blow, freezing her muscles mid-step. Her heart hammered against her ribs, urging her to run back to her room, to hide in the closet until morning came. But she had to check on her parents. She was a big girl now.

The door to her parents' bedroom gaped open, spilling yellow lamplight into the hallway. Her mother's voice drifted out—pleading, desperate words that made Sabrina's stomach twist. She'd never heard her mother sound like that before. Her knees trembled as she crept forward, one hand trailing along the wall for support.

She pressed against the wall and peered around the doorframe. The scene burned itself into her mind with cruel clarity. Three men in dark clothes stood around the bed, their faces hidden in shadow. A Machamp loomed by the window, its four arms flexed and ready. Two Haunters hovered near the ceiling, their gaseous forms partially obscured by the lampshade. Red eyes gleamed with malicious intent.

Her father lay motionless on the floor, one arm bent at an awkward angle. Blood trickled from his temple, forming a small pool on the cream carpet. Her mother sat up in bed, pressed against the headboard, her long black hair dishevelled. The silk sheets were twisted around her legs.

"I don't care what you do to me, but don't hurt Sabrina," her mother begged.

The tallest man, clearly the leader, grabbed her mother's arm and hurled her to the ground. She landed hard, crying out as her knee struck the bedside table. "Don't worry, Mrs Kuroi. We have great plans for Sabrina. We won't harm a hair on her head."

Her mother's face drained of colour, recognition dawning in her eyes. "What are you going to do with her?"

"Giovanni needs her for a little project." The man's voice held an edge of excitement, like a child describing a new toy. He paced around her mother's prone form, boots leaving muddy prints on the carpet. "Our leader wants to know if we can create a Pokemon from a human with powerful psychic abilities. Imagine—a new species to rival the legendaries."

"You're mad," her mother spat, attempting to push herself up. A Haunter swooped down, pressing her back to the floor with ethereal hands. "And absolute monsters."

The man pulled out a knife, its polished surface catching the lamplight. He crouched beside her mother, tracing the blade along her cheek. A thin line of red followed its path. "You hit the nail on the head."

The blade plunged down. Blood bloomed across her mother's white nightgown like spilt wine. The sound that escaped her mother's throat would haunt Sabrina's dreams for years to come. A scream tore from her own lips before she could stop it.

The men spun around, the leader's knife dripping red onto the carpet. "Catch her!" he barked.

Sabrina ran, tears streaming down her face, sobs catching in her throat. Her feet slapped against the wooden floor as she fled, each impact jolting through her bones. Picture frames rattled on the walls as she passed. Footsteps thundered behind her, getting closer with each stride. Someone shouted orders—commands to Pokemon she couldn't make out through her panic.

Through her tear-blurred vision, she didn't notice the doll walking down the hallway, its porcelain face eerily calm in the darkness. A Banette floated beside it, red eyes blazing with protective fury.

The memory shattered like glass. Sabrina jerked upright with a cry, her heart pounding in her chest.

Sabrina's breathing slowed as she focused on Bree's familiar form beside her on the bed and Uxie hovering near the footboard. Her nightgown clung to her skin, damp with sweat, and her hands trembled as the echoes of her mother's final scream still rang in her ears. The memory felt raw, like an old wound torn open and bleeding afresh.

Bree's porcelain hand patted her cheek. "Are you okay?"

Sabrina nodded, her throat tight with unshed tears. "I remember what happened in their bedroom. The conversation between my mother and those men..." She pressed her palm against her chest, trying to ease the ache that had settled there. "Why didn't I tell you about it before you erased the memory?"

"Take a moment," Bree said, her painted eyes watching carefully. "Think about it."

Sabrina rubbed her arms as a chill ran through her. The answer surfaced with startling clarity, like a stone breaking the water's surface, bringing with it a wave of self-loathing that threatened to drown her.

"Guilt," she whispered. "My parents were killed because of me. Those men wanted to kidnap me. That's why they came to our house." The admission released something dark and heavy that had been festering inside her for years.

The sharp crack of Bree's hand against her cheek echoed through the room.

Sabrina winced, touching the stinging spot. "What was that for?"

"Are you stupid?" Bree folded her arms. "Have you forgotten they were there to kill your parents because of Shido? You're the victim here. They were the monsters who took your parents from you."

The fierce protectiveness in Bree's voice made Sabrina's eyes burn with fresh tears.

"But I could have protected them!" Sabrina's voice rose to a shout. Around the room, objects began to lift off surfaces—books, cushions, even her bedside lamp—responding to the storm of emotions raging inside her. "If only I'd used my abilities instead of running like a frightened child!"

Bree sighed. "But you were a child. That situation would be traumatic for an adult, let alone an eight-year-old."

"I suppose," Sabrina muttered. Her head snapped up as realisation struck, bringing with it a fresh wave of horror. "Giovanni was trying to create a Pokemon even back then. But his methods..." The implications made her stomach churn.

"It must have been a precursor to Project Inception," Bree said, her eyes narrowing to dark slits. "At least we know for certain that Giovanni was involved. It wants me to kill him even more."

Uxie drifted closer, its mental voice calm but firm in their minds, cutting through the heavy atmosphere. "As fascinating as this story is, I need you to focus on regaining control of your psychic abilities."

Sabrina frowned and glanced around the room. Her eyes widened as she noticed the array of objects suspended in the air, rotating slowly like planets around a sun.

"Did I do that?"

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas jolted awake as a deafening roar tore through the night, followed by a violent tremor that shook the entire building. The Zapdos egg wobbled precariously in its nest of cushions before he lunged to steady it.

Panicked screams filtered through the walls.

Meowth sat up from his spot at the foot of the bed, fur bristling like charged wire. "Who's making all the noise?"

The sound of running feet and slamming doors echoed down the corridor. Someone's child was crying, the sound piercing through the chaos.

Lucas rushed to the glass balcony door, yanking it open. The warm night air had turned scorching. The dormant volcano—no longer dormant—dominated the view, its silhouette stark against the star-filled sky. Horror gripped him as he watched a section of the mountainside break away with a sound like tearing earth, revealing bubbling lava beneath. The molten rock glowed an angry orange-red, casting an apocalyptic light over the town. Thick black smoke poured from the caldera, transforming the evening sky into an impenetrable void.

He scowled. "Just my freaking luck."

Once again, he'd stumbled into another crisis. At this rate, he'd develop an allergy to peaceful days.

Meowth appeared beside him. "At least it's not a wall of superheated ash flying down the mountain. Let's get out of here before the lava reaches the town."

"Good thinking." Lucas reached for Dante's pokeball but stopped, his fingers hovering over the sphere. His hand moved to Saphira's instead. "On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to check out the situation."

Meowth groaned, ears flattening against his head. "You're kidding me. Why can't we ever just run away from danger like normal people?"

Lucas stepped onto the balcony. Small pieces of volcanic rock rained down, pinging off the metal railing. He released Saphira, and the Dragonair appeared in the sky.

He settled on her back and Meowth positioned himself behind, claws gripping for security. As Saphira rose into the smoke-filled sky, he raised an aura barrier over them to deflect the falling ash.

Below, the town had descended into chaos. People streamed from buildings like disturbed ants, their shouts carrying on the wind. Parents clutched children, tourists grabbed valuable belongings, and Pokemon of all types followed their trainers in a panic. Emergency sirens wailed across the town, their sound mixing with the volcano's rumble to create a symphony of disaster.

"Trouble!" Meowth's claws dug into Lucas's shoulder.

Lucas turned his head. His eyes widened as a massive form emerged from the smoke, its approach heralded by a wave of intense heat. Wings of living flame spread across the sky as it headed straight for the mountain, each beat sending sparks cascading through the air. The legendary bird's cry split the night—a sound of pure rage that made Lucas's teeth vibrate in his skull.

Moltres had arrived. Its eyes burned with fury as it surveyed the awakening volcano below.

"Well," Lucas muttered, tightening his grip on Saphira's scales, "this should be interesting."

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Lucas plays the hero as the island descends into chaos.

Thanks for reading.
