Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 67

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. Lucas and Sabrina arrive in the Rota Kingdom, while Malva continues to cause trouble in Viridian City. But Bree senses there is something amiss, and is on the case.

Chapter 67

Cassidy drummed her fingers on the polished mahogany desk, her eyes fixed on the ornate oak door. The steady ticking of the antique clock on the wall only heightened her unease. She'd received many visitors in this office, but never one that made her pulse quicken like this.

The phone call replayed in her mind. A woman's voice, making veiled insinuations about Cassidy's identity. How much did this woman know?

A sharp knock cut through the silence. She took a deep breath, smoothing her features into a mask of calm authority.

"Come in," she called.

The door swung open, revealing a woman with vibrant pink hair and a predatory smile. Cassidy's eyes narrowed. Whatever game this woman was playing, Cassidy wasn't about to become an easy mark.

Malva settled into the chair opposite Cassidy, crossing her legs with feline grace.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?" Cassidy asked.

Malva's lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Oh, I think you know, Cassidy. Or should I say... Team Rocket operative?"

Cassidy's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her face impassive, years of practice kicking in.

"I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about," Cassidy replied.

"Come now," Malva purred, leaning back in her chair with an air of smug confidence. "Let's not waste time with denials. I know all about your... extracurricular activities."

Cassidy's mind raced as she considered possible sources of the leak. How had this woman uncovered her secret?

“You're mistaken," she said firmly, meeting Malva's gaze. "I'm the mayor of Viridian City, nothing more."

"It doesn't matter if you deny it," Malva said, her voice low and threatening. "Now, I'm going to need two things from you. First, make sure those Aura Guardians focus on finding any contagious Pokemon in the forest, not the city. Secondly, you are to make sure that no maintenance people go down to the sewers for the foreseeable future."

Cassidy blanched, her imagination running wild with the implications. What was this woman planning? "And if I refuse?" she asked.

"Then I let the world know who you are," Malva replied. "I wonder how your constituents would react to learning their beloved mayor is a criminal."

"I can return the favour. You must be a member of a criminal organisation if you are doing such shady things. Wait a minute. You're from the Kalos region. Does that—"

"It doesn't matter what you suspect," Malva interrupted, waving a dismissive hand. "If people were to investigate me, they wouldn't find anything. I made sure to be very careful. I wonder if the same can be said for you."

Without waiting for a response, Malva stood and strode to the door. "I'll be in touch.”

Cassidy slumped in her chair, the weight of Malva's demands pressing down on her like a physical force.

Did she have to dance to this woman's tune? Was there no other choice? Cassidy had always prided herself on being a survivor, willing to do almost anything to stay on top. But what Malva was planning... it made her stomach churn.

Her hand hovered over the phone. She could play along, for now. Buy herself some time. Malva was sorely mistaken if she thought she'd won this game so easily.

A conflicting thought wormed its way into Cassidy's mind. Perhaps it was time to cut her losses. Find a new city and start fresh. Build a life truly free from the shadows of her past.

There was another, more pressing reason for considering this drastic move. Giovanni's patience was wearing dangerously thin. His demands for Lucas Walker's demise had become increasingly frequent and forceful over the past week. Cassidy had bought some time, explaining that Lucas's high profile made any move against him too risky at present. But she knew this excuse was a ticking time bomb.

Giovanni's tolerance had limits, and she was rapidly approaching them. The weight of his expectations pressed down on her, a constant, suffocating presence. She had to make up her mind, and soon. Stay and navigate this treacherous path, or flee and start anew?

Her gaze fell on the framed photos adorning her desk. Each image captured a moment of triumph—shaking hands with the Elite Four, cutting ribbons at new buildings. These weren't just photos; they were hard-won victories, steps towards the legitimacy she'd craved for so long.

Cassidy had clawed her way up from nothing, shedding her old skin and reinventing herself piece by painstaking piece. Every handshake, every smile, and every carefully cultivated relationship was a brick in the foundation of her new life.

Her jaw clenched, resolve hardening in her eyes. No. She wouldn't let Malva, Giovanni, or anyone else take this away from her. This was her city now, her life. Cassidy had survived worse odds before. She'd find a way through this, no matter the cost. After all, that's what survivors do.

Malva sauntered away from the administrative building. The past forty-eight hours had yielded a treasure trove of information, which had led to the meeting with the mayor.

The mysterious visitor to Lucas' residence had piqued her interest, and it hadn't taken long to uncover their identity. Queen Ilene of the Rota Kingdom. That was certainly an unexpected occurrence.

Malva paused on a busy street corner, pulling a sleek silver case from her pocket. She lit a cigarette, the flame briefly illuminating her sharp features.

Aura Guardians. Her boss had informed her about their various capabilities. After thinking about the timing of the visit, the pieces snapped into place with alarming clarity. They were here to sniff out any remaining infected Pokémon, and their unique sensory abilities made them an annoying impediment to her plans.

"Not if I have anything to say about it," Malva muttered.

With Cassidy unwittingly clearing her path, Malva could set her true plan in motion. The city's sprawling sewer system would serve as the perfect breeding ground, hidden from prying eyes and those pesky aura-sensitive minds.

Malva crushed her cigarette under her stiletto heel. If they wanted to play the hero, fine. She'd give them a crisis they couldn't ignore. By the time they realised what was happening, it would be far too late.

Bree sat cross-legged on the plush carpet, arranging her dolls in a neat circle. She hummed softly, smoothing down a frilly dress. Suddenly, she froze. Her head cocked to one side, eyes unfocused.

"Something's not right," she murmured. Her psychic senses were tingling. "Someone... someone with bad intentions. Towards the city and Lucas."

She frowned, concentrating harder. The malevolent presence felt eerily familiar, like looking in a warped mirror.

"Reminds me of myself," Bree mused. "What to do, what to do..."

She reached out mentally, searching for Salem. Nothing. The Pokémon was too far away. Lucas and Sabrina had just left for Rota Kingdom, so she couldn’t rely on them.

Bree huffed in frustration. She'd have to handle this herself. Gripping the edge of her dresser, she hauled herself to her feet. She waddled over to the door.

The lock on the outside posed no challenge to her telekinetic abilities, but it kept others out. Sabrina had warned Daisy and Brock not to enter. Bree smirked, picturing their expressions if they ever entered her room and saw her turn her head to look at them.

With a flick of her mind, she unlocked the door and eased it open. She poked her head out, glancing left and right. The coast was clear.

Bree shuffled to the top of the stairs and lowered herself onto the first step. Bit by bit, she slid down on her bottom, making a soft thumping noise.

Halfway down, a piercing shriek made her look up. Daisy Oak stood at the bottom of the stairs, eyes wide with horror.

"Oh, bother," Bree muttered. Sabrina wouldn't be pleased about this.

She fixed Daisy with her button-eyed stare. "Well, since you've discovered my secret, I may as well put you to use. Pick me up, would you?"

Daisy's eyes rolled back. She crumpled to the floor in a dead faint.

Bree sighed. Humans could be so dramatic. But then she smirked. Daisy’s reaction was better than she anticipated. She continued her slow descent, finally reaching the unconscious woman.

"Hey," she said, prodding Daisy's cheek. "Wake up, you silly girl. We haven't got all day."

Daisy's eyes fluttered. She blinked, focusing on Bree's face inches from her own. She scrambled backwards, mouth opening to scream again.

"Don't you dare," Bree snapped. "One peep and I'll turn your hair purple for a month."

Daisy's jaw snapped shut. She stared at Bree, trembling.

"That's better," Bree said. "Now, be a dear and carry me to the kitchen. We need something to discuss."

Daisy hesitated, then gingerly picked up the doll. Bree nestled into her arms, enjoying the warmth.

"There's a good girl," she cooed. "And Daisy? If you drop me, I'll make sure you never sleep soundly again. Understood?"

Daisy nodded frantically. She carried Bree towards the kitchen, her steps unsteady.

Bree smiled to herself. Perhaps this unexpected reveal would work in her favour after all. With Daisy aware of her true nature, she'd have more freedom to move about.

Now, to investigate the disturbance in the city.

Lucas and Sabrina stepped out of the ornate carriage, their legs stiff from the long journey. After arriving at the massive gate separating Kanto from the Rota Kingdom, they were escorted through to the other side, where a carriage was waiting for them. They drove for three hours through the mountains before the road descended into the valley and revealed the sprawling city.

"Damn, that’s a sight," Lucas said.

Rota's skyline stretched before them, a tapestry of mediaeval architecture that seemed plucked from a fairytale. Towering spires of grey stone rose to the sky, their peaks adorned with fluttering pennants in vibrant blues and gold. Narrow streets wound between half-timbered buildings, their upper stories jutting out over the thoroughfares below.

According to his understanding, the city was once a town before it began to rapidly expand as a result of sheltering Aura Guardians from all over the world. They had, however, managed to preserve the ancient town's aesthetic.

Sabrina's gaze was drawn to a group of figures in the distance. Their hands pulsed with ethereal blue energy, casting an otherworldly glow on the surrounding stonework.

"Look, Aura Guardians," she murmured. "I've never seen so many in one place."

The driver, a portly man with a bushy beard and twinkling eyes, chuckled heartily. His laughter lines deepened as he grinned at the newcomers.

"Aye, they're a common sight here, m'lady. That there's the Aura Academy," he said, pointing a calloused finger towards an imposing structure of weathered granite. "Where they train the next generation of Guardians, they do."

Meowth peered out the carriage window. His eyes darted from building to building, lingering on the glint of gold and silver adorning the wealthier establishments.

Lucas caught the feline's eye and shook his head.

"Don't even think about it," he warned. "This place is crawling with Aura Guardians. I don't fancy explaining to the Queen why my Pokemon was caught nicking the city's valuables."

Even with Meowth’s unique abilities, Lucas wasn’t confident that the Pokemon could remain undetected. There was still so much he didn’t know about the Aura Guardian's abilities.

“This kingdom looks rich, Meowth. They should share the wealth.”

After stretching their legs, they returned to the carriage and continued to Cameron Palace. They headed north of the city and approached a stone bridge, its arches spanning a crystal-clear lake that reflected the azure sky above. As they crossed, Lucas marvelled at the engineering feat, wondering how such a structure could have been built centuries ago.

As they neared the island at the lake's centre, a majestic castle came into view. Its white stone walls gleamed in the sunlight. Towers and turrets of varying heights created a jagged silhouette against the sky, each one topped with a conical roof of deep blue tiles.

The carriage pulled into the castle's inner courtyard, where Queen Ilene stood waiting.

Lucas stepped out first, the gravel crunching under his feet. He turned, offering his hand to Sabrina with a flourish that made her roll her eyes even as she accepted his help. A sudden blur of movement caught his eye, and he tensed instinctively.

A Lucario landed gracefully beside the carriage, its movements fluid and controlled. Its red eyes fixed on Lucas, assessing him with an intensity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

"Not to worry," Queen Ilene said. She noted Lucas's startled expression with a hint of amusement. "That's just Felix. He's rather protective of me and likes to inspect new arrivals personally. I assure you, he means no harm."

Lucas nodded. Lucario wasn’t hostile, but he was nearly level eighty, so it was best not to get on the Pokemon’s bad side.

Queen Ilene gestured towards the castle's grand entrance. "Shall we get on with the tour?"

As they followed Queen Ilene into the castle, Lucas felt a familiar tug at the edge of his consciousness. He'd felt it before—the unmistakable presence of a Zygarde Core. His steps faltered momentarily, causing Sabrina to shoot him a questioning glance.

Lucas whispered to her, promising to explain later.

They passed through grand hallways adorned with tapestries and suits of armour. Lucas' senses remained on high alert. His eyes darted everywhere, searching for any sign of hidden compartments or secret passages. The Core's presence grew stronger with each step, pulsing like a distant heartbeat in his mind.

His gaze settled on an unremarkable wooden door as they rounded a corner. The pull was strongest here, almost overwhelming. Lucas forced himself to maintain a neutral expression, nodding along to the Queen's historical anecdotes.

He'd come to Rota ostensibly to view the properties, but he knew that a Core existed in the kingdom. He didn’t think he would find it so quickly, however. Since they were staying at the castle for a few days, he would have plenty of opportunities to look for it.

But first, he needed to finish the tour. Lucas forced a smile and focused once again on Queen Ilene's speech.

After lunch in the great hall, Queen Ilene led Lucas and Sabrina through the winding cobblestone streets of Rota to check out the first property. The bustling market Square came alive with vibrant colours and a cacophony of sounds as vendors hawked their wares.

They stopped before a quaint building with a timbered facade and large display windows. A weathered wooden sign hung above the door, creaking gently in the breeze.

"This is the shop I mentioned," Queen Ilene said, producing an ornate key from her pocket.

The door swung open with a soft creak, revealing a charming interior. Polished wooden shelves lined the walls, and a sturdy counter dominated the front room. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting warm patterns on the worn floorboards.

Lucas ran his hand along the smooth counter's surface. "Nice, but I'm more interested in the back."

Queen Ilene nodded, leading them through a narrow doorway. The back area was a stark contrast to the homey front. Thick stone walls surrounded a reinforced room designed for potion-making. Heavy-duty ventilation systems hung from the ceiling, and fire-resistant worktops lined the walls.

Adjacent to this was a storage room. Floor-to-ceiling shelves stretched into the shadows, promising ample space for ingredients and finished products alike.

"This is more like it," Lucas murmured, his mind already cataloguing the possibilities.

As they exited the shop, Lucas turned to Queen Ilene. "Does the kingdom have potions to restore Aura?"

"We do, but they're not as efficient as we'd like. Still, they're better than waiting for the aura to recover naturally." She eyed Lucas curiously. "Most people don't have the aura capacity that you do."

"Could I see the potions on offer?"

Queen Ilene led them to another shop a few streets over. Inside, glass cabinets displayed an array of potions. Lucas examined the aura restoration potions closely. He was surprised to find they only recovered half the amount of his potions. The price tag made him raise an eyebrow—they were quite expensive.

He had made a similar potion, which was stronger than anything here. What if he could improve it further? The wheels in his mind began to turn.

Leaving the market behind, they headed for the farm outside the city. As they travelled, the urban landscape gave way to rolling countryside. Spring seemed to have arrived early in the Rota Kingdom; vibrant wildflowers dotted the meadows, and the trees were flush with new leaves.

The carriage came to a stop before a rustic wooden gate. Beyond it, Lucas could see the property stretching out before them—one hundred and fifty acres of lush fields.

"This is incredible," Lucas breathed, taking in the expanse. The gentle slopes were carpeted in rich green grass, dotted here and there with clusters of ancient oak trees. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of blooming flowers and rich earth.

Sabrina nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the landscape. "The Pokemon would have plenty of room to roam."

They followed a well-worn dirt path that wound its way through the property. Several sturdy outbuildings came into view, their weathered wood speaking to years of use. Lucas peered inside one, noting the solid construction and ample space. Thick wooden beams supported a high ceiling, and the earthen floor was cool and dry.

They crested a small hill, and the full expanse of the property revealed itself. To the east, a dense forest created a natural boundary, its canopy a patchwork of greens. The western edge was defined by the meandering stream, its waters glittering in the afternoon sun.

Queen Ilene pointed to a cluster of buildings in the distance. "There's the main house and several barns. They're all in good condition, though you might want to modernise them a bit."

The main house was a two-storey stone structure with a slate roof, its walls covered in climbing ivy. It had a rustic charm that appealed to Lucas immediately. Inside, they found spacious rooms with high ceilings and large windows that flooded the space with natural light.

"This could work as a comfortable living space," Sabrina said, running her hand along a smooth wooden bannister. "Though we'd need to do some renovations."

The barns were equally impressive—large, airy structures with solid foundations. The largest barn had a loft accessible by a sturdy ladder, which Lucas immediately saw potential in for additional storage or a small office space.

As they exited the last barn, Queen Ilene turned to them expectantly. "So, what do you think? Can you see yourselves here?"

Lucas and Sabrina exchanged a look, a silent conversation passing between them. The property was undeniably appealing, offering everything they'd need for a successful breeding operation. But it was a big decision, one that would significantly change their lives.

"It's certainly impressive," Lucas said carefully. "But we'd need some time to think it over. It's a big commitment."

Queen Ilene smiled. "There's a special place I'd like to show you while you're deciding. But I must warn you—what you're about to see is strictly confidential. Can I trust you to keep this secret?"

Lucas and Sabrina exchanged glances before nodding their agreement.

"Excellent," said Queen Ilene. "Let's return to the carriage."

They got back into the carriage and returned to Cameron Castle. But instead of stopping there, they continued north across the bridge to the opposite shore.

They travelled along the winding road, and soon, an enormous tree-like structure loomed on the horizon, dominating the landscape. Its jagged silhouette seemed to scrape the sky, dwarfing everything around it.

Queen Ilene gestured towards the colossal formation. "That is the Tree of Beginning. Despite its appearance, it's actually a massive rock formation—a living organism composed of crystals that derive sustenance from sunlight."

As they drew closer, the sheer scale of the structure became apparent. Its crystalline "branches" stretched hundreds of metres into the sky, catching and refracting the sunlight in dazzling patterns. The base of the tree spread out for kilometres, its roots disappearing into the surrounding landscape.

"The Tree has a symbiotic relationship with a Mew that resides within it," Queen Ilene said.

Lucas's eyebrows shot up. "Mew? So this is where he lives."

Queen Ilene nodded. "Indeed. Although he comes and goes a lot.”

“Do any other legendary Pokemon live there?” Lucas asked.

“No. We are fortunate to have one legendary Pokemon that calls it home.”

Despite what she said, Lucas had the impression she was hiding something, but he didn’t press her for an explanation.

Queen Ilene continued. “The Tree of Beginning is a sanctuary, untouched by the outside world. It's home to many species of ancient Pokémon long thought extinct."

"Are you talking about Fossil Pokémon?" Sabrina asked incredulously.

"That's right," Queen Ilene confirmed. "The Tree possesses a unique ability to revive ancient Pokémon from fossils. This is one of our most closely guarded secrets, which is why I'm trusting you with this knowledge. To keep the secret, these Pokémon live exclusively beneath and around the Tree."

For the next hour, they watched as the Tree grew impossibly larger. Its crystals shimmered in the sunlight, creating a mesmerising display of light and colour. When they finally arrived at its base, they disembarked from the carriage.

Lucas whistled as he took in the lush landscape surrounding them. Verdant grass carpeted the ground, interspersed with clusters of vibrant wildflowers. Crystal formations jutted from the earth, their facets glinting in the sunlight. "If you offered to sell this place, I'd buy it in a heartbeat."

Queen Ilene chuckled. "I'm afraid that's not possible. The Tree of Beginning is far too important to our kingdom."

They began walking towards the Tree's base, where a small entrance was visible amidst the crystalline roots. The opening seemed to pulse with a faint, otherworldly light.

"The Tree's ecosystem is incredibly delicate," Queen Ilene explained as they approached. "We limit access to protect it. Only a select few are allowed inside."

The temperature dropped noticeably as they entered. The walls pulsed with a faint, blue-green light that seemed to emanate from within the crystals themselves. The air was crisp and clean, with a slight metallic tang.

"Watch your step," Queen Ilene warned as they navigated the uneven floor. "The pathways can be treacherous."

They descended deeper into the Tree, the passages gradually widening into vast caverns. Crystalline formations jutted from the walls and ceiling, casting prismatic reflections across the chamber.

Suddenly, a low rumble echoed through the cavern. Lucas and Sabrina froze, exchanging nervous glances. The sound reverberated through the crystal walls, growing louder.

Queen Ilene smiled reassuringly. "Don't be alarmed. That's just—"

Before she could finish, a massive shape lumbered into view. Lucas's jaw dropped as he recognised the distinctive rocky hide and blood-red eyes of an Aerodactyl. Its wingspan must have been at least five metres, its razor-sharp talons leaving scratches on the crystal floor.

"Incredible," Sabrina breathed, her eyes wide with wonder.

The Aerodactyl regarded them curiously for a moment. Then it let out another rumbling cry and took flight, the downdraft from its wings nearly knocking them off their feet. It disappeared into a higher cavern, leaving them in stunned silence.

"As you can see," Queen Ilene said, "the Tree of Beginning is a sanctuary for Pokémon that have no place in the modern world.”

Lucas wondered if she opposed the scientist's attempts to revive the Pokemon using technology. He remembered visiting the museum in Pewter City and meeting Dr. Stone, who had failed to resurrect an ancient Pokémon. He was sure the man would cut off his right arm just to see what was in front of him.

They continued their tour, encountering more prehistoric Pokémon along the way. A group of Omanyte clustered around a crystal pool, their tentacles waving gently in the water. The pool itself seemed to glow from within, casting eerie shadows on the cavern walls.

An Armaldo scuttled across their path, its armoured body gleaming in the crystal light. It paused to observe them with its compound eyes, antennae twitching as if tasting the air, before continuing on its way.

As they rounded a corner, they entered a massive central chamber. The ceiling arched high above them, lost in shadows. At its heart stood an enormous crystal, easily the size of a house, pulsing with vibrant energy. Smaller crystals orbited around it, creating a mesmerising dance of light and colour.

"This is the core of the Tree," Queen Ilene explained, her voice filled with reverence. "It's the source of the energy that sustains this entire ecosystem. We believe it's also the nexus of the Tree's consciousness."

Lucas suddenly felt a surge of energy coursing through his body. His aura, usually a subtle presence, now thrummed with newfound vigour. He turned to Queen Ilene, his brow furrowed in confusion.

"What's happening?" he asked. "My aura feels... different. Stronger."

Queen Ilene raised an eyebrow. "Haven't you already figured it out? This is aura energy. When one stands in this chamber, their aura is magnified significantly. We grant special permission to a lucky few who can enter here and train. You can achieve substantial results for half the effort."

Lucas's eyes widened as the implications sank in. "What are the chances I can train here?" he asked, trying to keep the eagerness from his voice.

"If you move to the Rota Kingdom, you may use it," Queen Ilene replied, her tone matter-of-fact.

Lucas paused, considering his options. An idea struck him. "How about another trade? What if I were to create an aura restoration potion that is at least four times as effective as what's currently on the market?"

Queen Ilene's eyes gleamed. "Tell me more."

"I've already made an aura potion that's twice as effective as what you showed me. And that was only my first attempt. I'm certain I can improve upon it."

"You will show this potion to me?"

"Sure."

Queen Ilene studied him intently, her gaze sharp and assessing. After a moment, she spoke, her voice tinged with amusement. "It seems I have to work even harder to get you to relocate to my kingdom. If you can do what you say, you can have free access to the chamber."

Lucas grinned. He was completely confident in succeeding.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas jolted awake, his heart pounding. Sweat plastered his shirt to his skin as he sat up, gasping for air. The dream had felt so real—the dark clouds roiling around him, the lightning crackling with deadly intent, and Zapdos, its eyes blazing with primal fury as it bore down on him with terrifying speed.

Sabrina stirred beside him, her eyes fluttering open. "What's the matter?" she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep.

Lucas rubbed his face, trying to shake off the lingering dread. "Nothing. Just a nightmare. Go back to—"

A piercing screech cut through the night, sounding eerily similar to the one in his dream. It was followed by a low rumble of thunder that seemed to shake the very foundations of the castle. The sound reverberated through their bones—a primal call that demanded attention.

"I'm still not dreaming, am I?" Lucas asked, a chill running down his spine.

"I don't think so," Sabrina replied, her eyes wide with fear. She sat up, pulling the blankets around her.

They scrambled out of bed, the cold stone floor shocking their bare feet. Hastily pulling on robes, they rushed to the window. Lucas yanked back the heavy velvet curtains, and they both gasped at the sight before them.

Zapdos, massive and majestic, circled the castle. Its wings, easily spanning twenty metres, crackled with electricity, illuminating the night sky in brief, brilliant flashes. The legendary bird's presence was unmistakable, its power palpable even from a distance. Each wingbeat sent ripples of energy through the air, making the hairs on their arms stand on end.

The castle erupted into chaos. Shouts and running footsteps echoed through the corridors as residents and guards alike reacted to the unexpected visitor. The clang of armour and the barked orders of soldiers added to the cacophony.

"Shit," Lucas muttered, his mind racing. "I should have seen this coming. Does Zapdos know I bonded with its egg?"

Sabrina shook her head, her eyes never leaving the imposing figure of Zapdos. Its feathers seemed to glow from within, pulsing with barely contained power. "I don't know. But if it does, we could be in serious trouble."

A sharp knock at their door made them both jump. The wood seemed to rattle in its frame. "Mr. Walker, Miss Kuroi," a guard's voice called out, tension evident in his tone. "Queen Ilene requests your presence immediately in the great hall."

Lucas and Sabrina exchanged worried glances. The gravity of the situation was written clearly on both their faces. "We'll be right there," Lucas called back.

They hurried through the castle's winding corridors, and the sounds of panic grew louder. People in hastily donned nightclothes huddled in corners, whispering frantically.

"What do we do?" Sabrina asked, her voice low. She had to raise it slightly to be heard over the commotion. "If Zapdos is here for you..."

Lucas shook his head, dodging a frantic maid carrying a stack of blankets. "I don't know. But we can't exactly hide from a legendary Pokémon."

They burst into the great hall, finding it already filled with bleary-eyed people and frantic guards. The enormous chamber, usually so imposing, now felt claustrophobic with the press of bodies.

Queen Ilene stood at the centre, her usual composure slightly shaken but still maintaining an air of authority. Her hair was hastily pulled back, and her robe was slightly askew, but her eyes were sharp and focused.

"Lucas, Sabrina," she called out as soon as she saw them, her voice cutting through the din. "I'm afraid we have a situation."

"We noticed," Lucas replied, unable to keep the sarcasm from his voice. He immediately regretted his tone, given the circumstances. "Any idea why Zapdos is here?"

The queen gave him a searching look, her eyes boring into him as if she could extract the truth through sheer force of will. For a moment, Lucas thought she might press the issue, but she merely pursed her lips and moved on.

"We have no idea why Zapdos is here," she said. "However, we must respond to the threat before the city descends into chaos."

Outside, another ear-splitting screech pierced the night, followed by a thunderous boom that shook the very foundations of the castle. Several people yelled in fear.

"How do we even respond to such a threat?" Lucas asked.

Queen Ilene's expression hardened. "By requesting assistance. I'm afraid Mew is not here right now, but there is another Pokémon in the castle that can contend with Zapdos."

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, we have another legendary showdown.

Thanks for reading.
