Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 66

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. This one was hard to write for some reason. Still not completely happy with it, but at least it’s out.

Chapter 66

Lucas stood in the back garden, eyes closed in fierce concentration, focused on mastering his newest skill: Aura Projection. Beads of sweat trickled down his temples, a testament to the mental strain of manifesting a visual illusion mere feet away.

A faint shimmer materialised in the air, reminiscent of heat haze on a scorching summer road. Gradually, painstakingly, it began to coalesce into a hazy human form. The outline sharpened, details emerging like a photograph developing—the curve of a shoulder, the suggestion of facial features, the ghostly impression of clothing.

Maintaining the illusion proved far more challenging than Lucas had anticipated. The edges wavered and blurred like a mirage in the desert. Gritting his teeth, he pushed harder, pouring more of his aura into the projection. For a fleeting, triumphant moment, the figure solidified, almost lifelike in its appearance. Then, like a soap bubble bursting under too much pressure, it dissolved into nothingness.

"Bloody hell," Lucas muttered, wiping his forehead. "This is trickier than I thought."

The Aura Projection skill demanded a level of finesse he was still struggling to master. Yet, despite the frustration, Lucas wasn’t deterred. Each attempt, successful or not, honed his control over his aura, pushing his abilities further than he'd ever dreamt possible.

Around him, his Pokemon enjoyed a rare moment of tranquillity, each lost in their pursuits. Saphira had coiled herself in her custom-built pool, her scales shimmering like living sapphires in the morning light. She lazily flicked her tail, sending small ripples across the water's surface.

Not far from the pool, Max and Nero were engaged in what looked like a cross between wrestling and an elaborate game of tag. Max's fur crackled with static electricity, small blue sparks flying as he ducked and weaved around Nero's powerful jaws. Nero was still getting used to his new form. Sometimes he overshot his lunges because his larger size and strength made it hard for him to gauge his timing.

"Easy there, big fella," Lucas called out as Nero stumbled, nearly crashing into a meticulously tended flower bed. "You'll get the hang of it soon enough."

Nero growled in response, a sound that mixed frustration with determination. He squared up again, facing Max with renewed focus, his eyes narrowing as he studied the Electabuzz's movements.

Icarus and Icaria stood watch from the Pokemon Den, their sharp eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of danger.

Icarus still had visible reminders of his recent encounter with Azelf. Angry red welts marred his usually pristine plumage, stark evidence of the legendary Pokemon's overwhelming power. Though the wounds were healing, fading a little more each day, they served as a constant reminder of the battle's brutal outcome.

The defeat had shaken Icarus to his core. Even in his Mega form, a state of power that had always filled him with a sense of invincibility, he had been swatted aside like a mere annoyance. The ease with which Azelf had overpowered him had left a wound far deeper than any physical scar.

Lucas had tried to console his companion. "You shouldn't feel bad. Azelf is a legendary, and over a hundred levels above you. It would have been a miracle not to be taken down in one hit."

But logic did little to soothe Icarus's wounded pride. It gnawed at him, fuelling a burning desire to grow stronger and never again be found wanting when his trainer needed him most.

This drive had manifested in an almost manic insistence on immediate, intense training. Lucas, however, had put his foot down. Until he fully healed, he wouldn’t be doing any sort of training.

The rest of Lucas's team were in the Pokemon Habitat, engaged in their own specialised training regimens. Both Raphael and Ashe were on the verge of evolution, each requiring specific conditions to be met.

Raphael needed to defeat several grass-type Pokemon five levels above his own to meet a bonus evolutionary requirement. The challenge lay in finding grass-type Pokemon that Raphael, with his inherent weakness to the type, could feasibly defeat.

Lucas devised a strategy that focused on honing Raphael's ice affinity, which was super effective against grass-types. Once Raphael had improved enough, he would go out and see what TMs he could purchase. An ice-type move would even the odds, and diversify his move set.

Ashe had just grown her eighth tail, an important milestone in evolving into a Ninetales. Now, she needed to battle some fire-type Pokemon. Lucas considered heading back to Cinnabar Island, which had plenty of them. During his last visit, he hadn't fully explored the island because he spent most of his time at the docks, fishing for experience.

He planned to develop them within the week, so he provided them with growth potions. Everything hinged on how long the lockdown would continue. He had already taken a chance by leaving the city yesterday and wasn't eager to risk it again.

As Lucas returned his focus to his Aura Projection training, he noticed Dante standing aloof under a nearby tree, arms folded across his chest. This sight triggered a vivid flashback to the events of the previous night.

Lucas quietly slipped out in the dead of the night to search for Dante's pokeball. When he arrived, he bore witness to Azelf's unfathomable power that had laid waste to the entire village and the laboratory. Buildings were reduced to rubble, trees uprooted, and the once-peaceful landscape transformed into an apocalyptic wasteland. The destruction was so complete that Lucas had struggled to orient himself; the familiar landmarks obliterated beyond recognition.

He and his team had combed through the wreckage, searching for the distinctive red and white sphere. Every minute that passed without success ratcheted up Lucas's anxiety.

If a pokeball is destroyed, its occupant is forcibly released. It’s possible Dante was released right into the middle of an explosion. Just as despair threatened to overwhelm him, a triumphant call cut through the oppressive silence. Meowth had located the pokeball. The sphere had been flung an astonishing fifty metres from its original location.

A sudden commotion from the house drew Lucas's attention, breaking him out of his thoughts. Through the large bay window, he saw Shichiro pacing frenetically, his phone pressed tightly against his ear. The Prime Minister's free hand gesticulated wildly, his face a mask of intense focus and barely contained frustration.

Lucas knew Shichiro was planning to move against the Church of Arceus. The evidence of their involvement in the Rattata incident had hardened the Prime Minister's resolve. He aimed to strike while Azelf was weakened, a risky gambit that could anger the legendary Pokemon into retaliating.

Shichiro's ambitious aim to expel the church from the United Kanto region would be no easy feat. The church had been entrenched in the region since the war, its roots deeply intertwined with the fabric of society. Even if their reputation had taken a hit lately due to recent scandals, it wasn't enough to shake their foundation.

Furthermore, the evidence Lucas had provided while damning, was largely circumstantial. It painted a compelling picture, but without irrefutable proof, it wouldn't be enough to topple such a powerful institution.

The intricacies of United Kanto's modern governance precluded unilateral action, even for the Prime Minister. The days of decree-based rule were long gone, replaced by a complex system of checks and balances.

To push through new laws, Shichiro would need to navigate the labyrinthine structure of the Kanto Assembly. This unicameral legislature, while simpler than some regions' bicameral systems, presented its own unique challenges. The Assembly comprised 300 elected representatives, divided into 30 standing committees of varying sizes and focusses.

Support from key committees—such as the 40-member Committee on Constitutional Matters and the influential 35-member Committee on Public Opinion—would be crucial for success.

Complicating matters further was the unique Kanto Consensus System. Under this system, major legislative changes required not just a simple majority, but a two-thirds supermajority in the Assembly, followed by approval from the Council of Elders—a body of respected community leaders from across the region.

The Mayors, each in charge of one of Kanto's major cities, helped to shape the political landscape even further. While they weren’t directly involved in the legislative process, wielded significant power and could sway public opinion in their respective territories.

The sheer number of stakeholders involved in the process was staggering. Each Assembly member, Elder, and Mayor would need to be convinced, their support courted and secured. Undoubtedly, the church would mount a vigorous defence of its position and influence, leveraging its relationships with many of these political figures.

His brain hurt from just thinking about it. Sabrina had explained the basics to him, but most of it went over his head. Better to leave the politics to the experts.

Turning his attention to more pleasant matters, he opened his menu. After so much time, it was time to invest more pokedollars into increasing his capabilities

He chose to invest 500,000 pokedollars into the final upgrade for his Pokemon Habitat. It was a princely sum, to be sure, but Lucas reckoned the benefits would far outweigh the cost.

The new feature it introduced was fantastic: the training area could now be used to earn Effort Values. His Pokemon could now continue their training even after reaching their potential for a given level, accruing valuable Effort Values that would enhance their overall capabilities.

But the benefits didn't stop there. Once a Pokemon's Effort Values were maxed out, the system would automatically switch to granting experience points instead. While not as rapid as gaining experience through battles, it was a welcome bonus that would ensure his team's growth even during downtime.

The ultimate benefit, however, was that he could place Pokemon with a pseudo bond inside the habitat, and they would gain the same benefits from the training as his team. That meant he could train his breeding Pokemon without the need for assistance from others. It didn’t mean he wouldn’t still have them go out and battle Pokemon, as they needed variety, but it made managing them easier as the group expanded even more.

Sabrina stepped outside of the house. "Lucas, we're needed inside. Shichiro has returned, and we have some unexpected company."

With a nod to Sabrina, he began to make his way towards the house, his mind racing with possibilities.

"How was Brock?" Lucas asked.

He allowed his friend to take time off to be with his siblings after the lockdown started. Sabrina had visited them, doing her due diligence and checking up on the kids.

"He's well. Worried, like all of us, but glad for the time with his family."

They entered the living room. Shichiro stood near the fireplace, his posture rigid and his expression unreadable. But it was the women that drew Lucas's immediate attention.

One of them was a young woman, perhaps in her early twenties, with a regal bearing that belied her age. Her long, flowing blonde hair was adorned with an ornate tiara, its design reminiscent of a Beautifly's wings. She wore an elegant pink and white gown, its style a perfect blend of modern fashion and traditional royal attire.

She cradled a Mime Jr. in her arms, who waved at Lucas.

"Lucas, Sabrina," Shichiro said. “This is Queen Ilene of the Rota Kingdom and her lady-in-waiting."

Sabrina didn’t miss a beat and bowed to the queen.

"I didn't see this coming,” Lucas mused. "Why is the queen of the Rota Kingdom here?"

Sabrina nudged him. “Aren’t you going to show your respect?”

“There is no need,” Queen Ilene said, stepping forward. “I don’t expect other regions to follow our customs.”

Lucas frowned as the queen continued to walk towards him.

"My word," Queen Ilene breathed, her voice soft but filled with wonder. "I... I can sense a great amount of aura emanating from you."

The room fell silent, the tension ratcheting up several notches. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Shichiro tense up, his surprise quickly turning into anger.

"An Aura Guardian?" Shichiro's voice was low, dangerous. "You've kept this from me, Lucas?"

Lucas felt a surge of anger, both at the situation and at Queen Ilene for revealing his secret. He opened his mouth to retort, but the Queen beat him to it.

"Oh dear," she said. "I do apologise. I didn't mean to reveal your secret, but I was so startled by your presence. It's been so long since I've encountered an Aura Guardian of such potential."

Lucas grimaced. "It's alright. I understand it was not intentional."

“Did you already know about this?” Shichiro turned to his niece.

Sabrina nodded.

"We will discuss this later,” Shichiro ordered.

Lucas snorted. “There’s nothing to discuss. It’s none of your business.”

Shichiro grumbled something under his breath.

As the tension in the room slowly dissipated, the Queen's lady-in-waiting began to serve tea, the familiar ritual bringing a semblance of normalcy to the surreal gathering.

Once they were all seated, Queen Ilene began to speak.

Queen Ilene's gaze swept over the group. "I've come because of the recent events that have unfolded here. The Rota Kingdom has long kept a vigilant eye on Kanto, hoping for cooperation between our regions. However, such an alliance has always hinged on one critical condition: the removal of the church's influence from Kanto."

Shichiro leaned forward, his earlier frustration momentarily forgotten. "You've been monitoring us? For how long?"

"The histories of Rota and Kanto are deeply intertwined. Even when we isolated ourselves due to the church's presence, we never ceased watching, waiting for a time when our regions could once again stand as allies. But that alliance depends on the church being expelled from the region."

Lucas nodded. "I can understand why you would have that stipulation."

Queen Ilene's expression darkened. "The church is not what it appears to be. The true power behind it is—"

"Azelf," Lucas finished.

Surprise flickered across the Queen's face. "You've encountered it and lived? How is that possible?"

"I had... assistance," Lucas replied carefully.

Ilene's eyes narrowed. "If you survived an encounter with Azelf, it must have been with the aid of a legendary Pokemon. Was it Mew?"

Lucas hesitated. "How do you know about Mew?"

"Mew has graced us with his presence before," Ilene revealed. "Quite the charming creature. We've attempted to persuade it to reside in our kingdom, but it's as free-spirited as the wind."

"That sounds like Mew,” Lucas replied. “I’m curious. If the church had a legendary Pokemon behind it, why didn’t it act more aggressively against the Rota Kingdom? Surely, you don’t have the means to stand up to it.”

Queen Ilene paused. “An astute question. The reality is that we can defend ourselves, but I cannot say more. It requires sharing secrets I'm not ready to divulge.”

Lucas exchanged meaningful glances with Sabrina and Shichiro, a silent understanding passing between them. Queen Ilene didn't need to state it explicitly—the Rota Kingdom must have a legendary Pokemon backing them—one powerful enough to challenge Azelf.

Queen Ilene gently placed her teacup on the table, her expression growing sombre. "My intelligence network has informed me that Azelf has retreated to his stronghold in Sinnoh. He's nursing an injury that will take weeks to fully heal."

"Weeks?" Lucas echoed, his eyebrows shooting up in disbelief. The injury must have been worse than he thought.

The queen nodded gravely. "Injuring a legendary Pokemon requires immense power. As you may be aware, the higher a Pokemon's level, the more challenging healing becomes. Conventional remedies lose their efficacy." She paused, her gaze sweeping across the room. "At present, no remedy exists capable of healing a legendary Pokemon—there's simply never been a need for one."

Lucas nodded. He was familiar with the ineffectiveness of standard potions and revives on Pokemon above level seventy. Even his trait-shedding potion, which had worked on Mewtwo, was an exception rather than a true healing item.

Azelf, at level one hundred and forty-five, had no easy path to recovery. Unless it could find another legendary Pokemon to heal it, Azelf would have to rely on its regenerative abilities—a process that would take a considerable amount of time.

"This gives us time to expel the church from Kanto," Shirchiro said. "You mentioned an alliance?"

Queen Ilene inclined her head. “The only way to ensure the bill removing the church passes is by offering the politicians a more enticing alternative. By formalising a partnership between our regions—complete with special benefits such as exclusive trade deals—we may be able to sway the votes in your favour."

“What does the Rota Kingdom get out of this?” Sabrina asked.

“The Rota Kingdom only closed its borders to the world because Aura Guardians were being persecuted,” Queen Ilene said. “I would like that to change. Even though we strive to offer our citizens the best of everything, it’s still stifling to be confined to one region.”

“We have plenty to discuss,” Shichiro said. “I need to get my advisors here so we can hash out the details. Do you mind if we have the meeting here?”

Queen Ilene smiled. “Here is fine.”

Shichiro sighed. “Don’t think I haven't noticed that you broke the law by entering the city when it’s in lockdown. Do you realise that you could be putting yourself in danger by being here?"

"It couldn't wait," Queen Ilene replied. "By the way, I have access to specialists who may be able to assist in tracking down any remaining infected Pokemon."

"Aura Guardians?"

"Indeed," the Queen confirmed with a slight nod. "Some, like myself, specialise in sensing auras. However, there are those among us with even more... unique abilities. They can detect ailments, diseases, or other afflictions that would normally elude conventional methods."

"Convenient," Lucas murmured.

"But necessary. If you hadn’t discovered the laboratory, we have been facing the crisis instead. We have reason to believe that the church was engineering this contagion with the specific intent of targeting the Rota Kingdom."

The room fell silent, the weight of her words hanging heavy in the air.

"If Azelf cannot confront us directly," she continued, "he employs his puppets to devise more insidious methods."

With practiced grace, she lifted her teacup and took a measured sip, allowing them a moment to process the implications of this revelation.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Queen Ilene was ushered into a guest room, her royal presence adding an unexpected air of grandeur to the household. Shichiro, deeming the impending conversation too crucial for a mere phone call, had taken the calculated risk of summoning his advisors from the capital to Viridian City.

Lucas found himself playing an impromptu game of dodge as he navigated the sudden influx of people. The queen's attendants bustled about, rearranging furniture and hauling in what seemed to be an endless parade of royal necessities. Their thinly veiled looks of disdain spoke volumes about their opinion of the house's amenities.

"Bloody hell," Lucas muttered, narrowly avoiding a collision with a harried-looking maid. "Our home's turning into a bloody hotel."

As evening fell, the scientists returned with news that cut through the chaos. They'd developed a method to detect the contagion in blood samples. Despite the initial belief that transmission occurred solely through bites, no one was willing to stake their lives on assumptions.

The testing process was swift. One by one, the house's occupants submitted to blood draws, the atmosphere thick with unspoken anxiety. When the results finally came back negative for everyone, the collective sigh of relief was almost palpable.

Shichiro didn't waste a moment. "Test the entire city," he ordered, his tone brooking no argument. "Humans and Pokemon alike. If we can confirm no infections, we can consider easing the lockdown. Then we'll turn our attention to Viridian Forest."

The scientists exchanged glances, clearly daunted by the scale of the task, but nodded their assent.

As the house continued to buzz with activity, Lucas felt his patience wearing thin. The constant flow of unfamiliar faces and the hushed conversations were becoming overwhelming. Seeking refuge, he slipped away to his alchemy hut.

The familiar scents of herbs and minerals welcomed him as he entered, instantly soothing his frayed nerves. He approached his workbench, where the recipe for the Electrizer Potion lay open. He had been meaning to work on Clemont’s request, but other things had gotten in the way.

Lucas didn’t even know where to start. After reading the recipe, he tried to think of ways to turn the potion into a new fuel source. When he ran out of ideas, he turned to the ingredients he already had.

He laid out the ingredients and used his Green Thumb skill to read their properties. A few showed promise, but he knew the only way forward was through experimentation.

Soon, Lucas was fully immersed in his work. The cauldron's flames danced in response to his aura manipulation, casting eerie shadows across the hut's walls. The outside world faded away, replaced by the rhythmic bubbling of his concoction.

So focused was he on his task that he failed to notice the soft creak of the door opening behind him.

"Fascinating," a soft voice said.

Lucas' concentration was shattered. The flames inside the cauldron surged, and for one heartstopping moment, he saw the mixture begin to bubble ominously.

BOOM!

The concoction exploded in a shower of sparks and viscous liquid. Fortunately, he raised his Aura Barrier at the last second, saving him from severe burns.

As the smoke cleared, he saw Queen Ilene standing in the doorway, one hand clasped over her mouth in shock.

"Oh my," she gasped. "I'm so terribly sorry. I didn't mean to startle you."

Lucas waved his hand, dispelling the last wisps of his barrier. "No harm done," he said, though he couldn't quite keep the annoyance from his voice. "Though I might suggest announcing yourself next time you enter an alchemist's workspace."

Ilene nodded, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Of course. How thoughtless of me."

Sighing, Lucas gestured towards the door. "Shall we step outside? It’s going to take a while for the smoke to clear."

They walked out into the garden, the fresh air a welcome respite from the acrid smell inside the hut.

"Did you need something?" Lucas asked.

Ilene's regal composure returned. "Yes, actually. I wanted to speak with you privately."

"Oh?"

"I know you received an invitation to join our kingdom," she said, her eyes searching his face. "I was curious as to why you didn't accept."

Lucas shrugged. "The timing wasn't right. My secret was still safe, so I didn't see any reason to uproot my life."

Ilene nodded slowly. "I see. Well, I'd like to extend that invitation once more. In fact, I'd like to sweeten the deal, as it were."

She opened a folder Lucas hadn't noticed she was carrying. Inside were photographs and documents, which she spread out on a nearby garden table.

"This," she said, pointing to an aerial photo of lush farmland, "is just outside Rota City. It would be perfect for your Pokemon breeding operation. There are some buildings that you can use, or you can demolish and rebuild your own."

Lucas leaned in, studying the image. The land did look ideal—verdant fields, a sparkling stream, and plenty of space for expansion. It was only about five minutes outside of the city by carriage. It had to be worth a fortune.

“How much is it?”

“Three million pokedollars.”

“That cheap?” Lucas asked. “Given its size, it has to be worth much more than that.”

Ilene sighed. “Rota Kingdom really needs more Pokemon Breeders. That's why I'm offering some incentives. You're not the only one receiving this chance, but this is likely the best offer out there.”

Ilene continued, revealing another photo. This one showed a stately building in what appeared to be a bustling market square. "And this could be your alchemy shop. This one I can give you for one million pokedollars."

Lucas's eyebrows shot up. "You've been investigating me.”

"I prefer to think of it as due diligence," Ilene replied smoothly. "Rota doesn't have an established breeder, but it has a lot of wealth. You could corner the market and have the potion shop as a side business."

Lucas crossed his arms, regarding the queen carefully. "Why the interest in me? It seems like a lot of effort for one person."

Ilene's expression turned enigmatic. "I'd rather keep my full reasons to myself for the moment. But I will say... you remind me of someone."

Before Lucas could press further, she continued. "We're prepared to offer you significant incentives. Tax-free status for your first five years of business, for one."

Lucas whistled softly. That was no small offer.

"Additionally," Ilene went on, "we'd grant you and a select group of your choosing permission to travel freely between Viridian City and the Rota Kingdom if you decide to live here. That way, you can commute easily."

The offer was tempting, he had to admit. But something still nagged at him. "It's a generous proposal," he said slowly. "But I can't help feeling there's more to this than you're letting on."

Ilene's smile was both warm and slightly sad. "Perceptive. You're right, of course. There are... larger considerations at play. But I'm not at liberty to discuss them just yet."

Lucas had to resist the urge to accept the offer on the spot. He had been worried about where to open up a breeding business, as Gloria already held the market in Viridian City. Given the scope of the property, he was getting a bargain, and it was well within his price range.

"I'll need to discuss this with Sabrina," Lucas said. "And give it some serious thought."

"Of course," Ilene replied. "Take all the time you need. But do consider it carefully. Opportunities like this don't come along often."

As if on cue, a commotion from the house caught their attention. Shichiro's advisors had arrived in their carriages.

"Duty calls," Ilene said with a sigh. "Think about my offer, Lucas. I believe we could accomplish great things together."

Lucas entered the house and slipped into the bedroom, finding Sabrina seated at her vanity, running a brush through her long, silky hair. Without a word, he gently took the brush from her hand and continued the task, finding the repetitive motion oddly soothing.

"I've just had an interesting offer from Queen Ilene," Lucas said, his fingers working through a small tangle.

Sabrina's gaze met his in the mirror. "Oh? What sort of offer?"

As Lucas recounted his conversation with the queen, detailing the proposed properties and incentives, Sabrina listened intently. Her gaze flicked between Lucas's reflection and the documents he'd spread out before her.

"It's certainly tempting," she mused, her fingers tracing the outline of the farmland photograph. "But I think you should see these properties in person before making any decisions."

Lucas nodded, continuing his gentle ministrations with the brush. "That's a good shout. I hadn't considered that."

"If you can commute daily," Sabrina continued, "there's no pressing need to uproot our lives here. We could always reassess in the future."

"What if we ask the queen for an invitation to visit Rota?" Lucas suggested. "At the very least, we'd share a new experience."

Sabrina's face lit up with a smile. "That sounds lovely.”

Lucas set the brush down, leaning in to plant a soft kiss on Sabrina's nape. She shivered at the contact, her eyes fluttering closed.

"I want you right now," Lucas murmured against her skin. "It's a shame the house is so full. How quiet can you be?"

Sabrina turned, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Not nearly quiet enough.”

Malva stood motionless on the darkened street, far enough from Lucas' house to avoid drawing the attention of the patrolling guards. Her eyes were glued to a pair of high-powered binoculars, scanning the property with predatory intensity.

The arrival of new guests had piqued her interest, particularly the woman with the regal bearing. Whoever she was, she'd brought an impressive security detail. Malva's lips curled into a frown. These unexpected visitors would complicate matters, making it even more challenging to get close to Lucas Walker.

Her initial attempt at seduction had fallen embarrassingly flat. The boy was too besotted with Sabrina to even notice her charms. It was almost insulting.

Malva didn't need further confirmation that Lucas was the culprit who had stolen from the boss. She was already certain. The question now was how to proceed.

Her gaze dropped to the small cage at her feet. Inside, a Rattata thrashed against the bars, its eyes glowing with an unnatural, feral light. Lucas wasn't the only one who'd had the idea to capture one of the infected Pokemon. A cruel smile played across Malva's lips as she considered the possibilities for chaos such a creature could sow.

She crouched down, studying the frenzied Rattata. Its fur was matted and patchy, foam flecking its elongated muzzle. The sight would have turned most stomachs, but Malva found it fascinating. Such raw, unbridled aggression...

"You and I are going to have some fun, little one," she murmured, tapping the cage lightly.

The Rattata lunged at her finger, its teeth snapping just short of the bars. Malva chuckled, a low, dangerous sound.

She straightened, taking one last look at Lucas' house. The warm glow from the windows spoke of comfort and safety—a stark contrast to the darkness that surrounded her.

"Enjoy your little haven while you can, Lucas," Malva whispered. "Things are about to get very interesting indeed."

With a fluid motion, she scooped up the cage and melted into the shadows.

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Lucas and Sabrina pay a visit to the Rota Kingdom.

Thanks for reading.
