Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 59

Hi all,

Here’s the first chapter. I’m going to be playing catch-up over the next few days, but I promise to deliver the three remaining chapters as soon as I can.

Chapter 59

Lumiose City slumbered beneath a low-hanging moon, its pale face peeking between towering skyscrapers. Shadows stretched across deserted streets, transforming the familiar into a nocturnal labyrinth. In an alley opposite Lysandre Café, three figures melted into the darkness.

Lucas squirmed, the rough brick wall scraping his back. He tugged at his black turtleneck, nose wrinkling at the pungent stench wafting from a nearby dumpster.

“Why exactly are we cosplaying as cat burglars?” he muttered, his words forming misty plumes in the chill air.

Meowth's eyes glinted, reflecting what little light trickled into their hideaway. “Because, partner,” he purred, tail swishing mischievously, “that's precisely what we are tonight.”

Sabrina's barely audible sigh cut through the tension. She crouched beside Lucas, her obsidian attire indistinguishable from the shadows. “Less chatter,” she breathed, her gaze locked on the café.

“We're on a knife's edge here.”

Lucas nodded, his pulse quickening as adrenaline surged through his veins. They slipped from the alley, feet ghosting over the cracked pavement. The café loomed before them, its windows lifeless save for the faint electrical hum betraying active security systems.

At the entrance, Meowth took point. Moonlight glinted off his extended claws as he worked the lock with surgical precision. A soft click pierced the silence. The door inched open, its gentle creak deafening in the stillness.

They slipped inside. Monochrome shadows painted the interior under the moon's pallid glow. The lingering aroma of coffee mingled with harsh cleaning agents, assaulting Lucas's nostrils. His eyes adjusted slowly, transforming familiar shapes into alien silhouettes.

A wall-mounted clock ticked relentlessly, each second eroding their precious time. A Zygarde Core pulsed with ancient power somewhere in the building's bowels. Every moment heightened the risk of discovery.

Lucas closed his eyes, reaching out with senses beyond the physical. “The Core... its presence is stronger now. Definitely below us.”

They crept to the rear, locating the hidden door Meowth had previously scouted. A keypad glowed softly, its security unblemished.

“Salem, we need you,” Sabrina called out.

The Banette materialised, his zipper mouth contorting into a wicked grin.

“Phase through,” Sabrina instructed, her voice barely above a whisper. “See if you can trigger the mechanism from inside.”

Salem nodded, his form shimmering as he approached the door. A sudden crackle of energy repelled him, eliciting a surprised hiss.

Sabrina's brow furrowed. “Some kind of barrier. Salem, push through. I know you can do it.”

Salem's eyes narrowed, concentration etched into every line of his cloth body. He pressed against the invisible force, his form distorting grotesquely. For a heart-stopping moment, it seemed futile. Then, with a muted pop, he slipped through.

Seconds crawled by. Lucas held his breath, straining to catch any sound beyond the door. At last, a soft click echoed in the silence, and the panel swung open.

Salem hovered on the threshold, radiating smug satisfaction. Behind him, a steep staircase plunged into darkness.

“Brilliant,” Lucas breathed. He turned to Meowth. “You're up. Scout ahead, but tread lightly.”

Meowth nodded, his form shimmering as Shadow Veil cloaked him in near-invisibility. He crept down the stairs, Salem drifting alongside, the Banette's ethereal glow casting eerie shadows.

Lucas and Sabrina followed, their footfalls muffled on metal treads. At the bottom, a long corridor stretched before them. Harsh fluorescent lights flickered to life, triggered by their presence.

“So much for stealth,” Sabrina muttered, tension evident in the set of her shoulders.

Lucas frowned, an idea forming. He released Dante, the Gardevoir materialising with a questioning tilt of his head.

“Dante,” Lucas whispered, 'can you teleport outside the building?”

Dante's eyes glowed briefly, then dimmed. He shook his head, confusion evident in his posture.

Lucas swore under his breath. “Teleportation dampening field. We'll need another exit strategy.”

They pressed on, following Meowth's barely perceptible form. The corridor branched, each path delving deeper into the hidden facility.

Suddenly, Meowth froze. His Shadow Veil dropped as he whirled to face them, eyes wide with alarm.

Before he could speak, a menacing growl reverberated through the corridor.

Two massive Houndooms rounded the corner, their eyes blazing crimson in the dim light. Flames licked at their jaws as they snarled, hackles raised.

Salem floated forward, his zipper mouth stretching into a sinister grin. He positioned himself between the group and the advancing Houndoom. Understanding flashed between Sabrina and her Pokemon as her hand moved to her Mega Bracelet.

Energy surged from the Mega Stone, enveloping Salem in a cocoon of brilliant light. His form twisted and stretched, the cloth tearing and re-stitching. When the radiance faded, Mega Banette hovered before them, a nightmarish evolution of his former self.

The Houndoom hesitated, clearly unnerved by this new opponent. Their moment of uncertainty passed quickly, replaced by synchronised snarls as they charged.

Salem's eyes flashed. A wave of ghost-type energy caught the Houndoom mid-leap. They yelped, pain and surprise evident as their momentum abruptly ceased.

But these were not ordinary guard dogs. They shook off the attack, fire erupting from their maws with renewed ferocity.

Salem weaved between jets of flame, his new form defying physics as he contorted and twisted. He retaliated with a Shadow Ball, the orb of dark energy twice its usual size. It struck one Houndoom square in the chest, sending the beast skidding across polished metal flooring.

The second Houndoom lunged, his jaws snapping. But Salem was quicker. He evaded the attack, spinning in midair as his elongated claws pulsed with ghostly energy.

Salem's Shadow Claw raked across the Houndoom's flank. The beast's agonised howl reverberated off metal walls, spectral furrows marring its sleek coat.

The first Houndoom recovered from the Shadow Ball impact and unleashed a massive Flamethrower. Searing heat filled the corridor, and Lucas quickly summoned a barrier to protect Sabrina and himself from being burned.

Salem vanished, reappearing behind both Houndooms. The zippers lining his arms yawned open, disgorging tendrils of dark energy.

A supercharged Hex attack engulfed both Houndoom. Shadowy tendrils seeped into their wounds, amplifying pain beyond endurance. They whimpered, their aggression faltering as they struggled against the onslaught.

Seizing his advantage, Salem unleashed a final, colossal Shadow Ball. The pulsing orb split in two as it left his hands, each half striking a Houndoom with pinpoint accuracy. Twin explosions of shadow energy rocked the corridor.

The Pokémon collapsed, overwhelmed. They lay motionless, wisps of ghost-type energy clinging to their fur like spectral cobwebs.

Salem turned back to the group, his Mega form slowly fading. Despite scorch marks marring his cloth body, satisfaction radiated from every stitch.

Lucas exhaled slowly, his racing heart gradually steadying. “That was... something else.”

“We need to move,” Sabrina urged, her eyes scanning the corridor. “That commotion won't go unnoticed for long.”

They hurried onward, leaving the fallen Houndoom in their wake. The encounter served as a stark reminder of the perils lurking in the secret area. With each step deeper into the facility, the stakes climbed ever higher.

Lucas felt the Zygarde Core's presence intensifying, a beacon guiding their path. As they rounded another corner, a set of double doors greeted them. Though unguarded, Lucas knew the real challenge lay ahead. From here, security would only tighten.

The double doors loomed before them, a final barrier between the intruders and Team Flare's inner sanctum. Lucas exchanged a determined glance with Sabrina, their faces partially obscured by black hoods. With a deep breath, he pushed the doors open, revealing a stark, clinical laboratory beyond.

Harsh fluorescent lights cast an eerie glow over gleaming metal surfaces and complex machinery. The air hummed with electricity and the soft beeping of various monitors. The acrid scent of chemicals assaulted their nostrils. Lucas closed his eyes, reaching out with his heightened senses.

“This way,” he murmured, gesturing towards a corridor branching off to the right. 'The Core's presence is stronger in that direction.'

They moved swiftly, hugging the walls and ducking behind equipment whenever footsteps echoed nearby. Salem drifted ahead, his ghostly form perfectly suited for reconnaissance. The Banette's button eyes gleamed with mischief as he phased through walls, scouting their path.

A scientist in a crisp white lab coat rounded the corner, nose buried in a folder. Before he could look up, Salem's eyes flashed. The man crumpled silently to the floor, unconscious.

“Nice work,” Lucas whispered, dragging the prone form into a nearby storage cupboard.

Meowth materialised beside them, his whiskers twitching with excitement. “I'm going to do a bit of exploring, partner,” he purred. “Might find something interesting, yeah?”

Lucas nodded reluctantly. “Be careful. We don't know what other security measures they might have.”

The feline Pokémon grinned, activating his Shadow Veil. “Careful's my middle name.” With that, he vanished into the shadows, leaving only a faint shimmer in the air.

They continued, with Salem dispatching two more guards with eerie efficiency. The Banette seemed to revel in his role, each successful ambush bringing a wider grin to his zippered mouth. The unconscious bodies were quickly hidden, leaving no trace of their passage.

Finally, they reached a heavily reinforced door. A sign above it read, 'CORE CONTAINMENT - AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY'. The metal was cool to the touch as Lucas placed his hand on it, feeling the faint vibration of power beyond.

“This is it,” Lucas breathed, his hand hovering over the access panel.

Sabrina nodded. “Ready when you are.”

The door slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a circular chamber dominated by a glowing containment unit in its centre. And there, hunched over a control panel, was a woman with vivid red hair.

She muttered furiously to herself as she frantically tapped at a keyboard. 'No, no, no,' she hissed. “This can't be happening.”

Lucas and Sabrina crept closer, their black attire and raised hoods concealing their identities. As they approached, they saw what had the woman so distressed. A hairline crack marred the surface of the containment capsule, a faint wisp of energy escaping from within.

The woman whirled around at the sound of their footsteps, her eyes widening in alarm. “Who are you?” she demanded. “This area is off-limits!”

Lucas stepped forward, his voice low and threatening. "Step away from the capsule."

Her gaze darted between the intruders and the damaged capsule. Her hand inched towards a device on her belt. "I don't know how you got in here," she said, "but I can't let you interfere. This is too important."

"We're not asking," Sabrina said. Salem materialised beside her with a menacing grin.

The woman's eyes narrowed. "I won't risk damaging the Core," she said. "But that doesn't mean I'm defenceless. I am Aliana of Team Flare, and you've made a grave mistake coming here."

In one swift motion, Aliana grabbed the device from her belt and pressed a button. Hissing filled the air as vents in the ceiling opened, releasing a sickly green gas into the room. Simultaneously, she pulled a gas mask from a nearby desk and quickly secured it over her face.

"Cover your mouth!" Sabrina cried, covering her mouth with her sleeve.

Lucas acted on instinct. He thrust his hands outward, summoning a shimmering barrier of aura energy that enveloped them both. Concentrating intensely, Lucas manipulated the barrier's composition, making it less transparent and more solid. The gas clouds obscured their view of the room, but they were safe within the opaque dome. Only now, they had a limited amount of breathable air.

Aliana's triumphant smirk faded as she realised her ploy had failed. Before she could react further, Salem phased through Lucas's barrier and appeared before her. Banette's eyes flashed, and Aliana collapsed to the floor, unconscious. Her gas mask clattered against the tiles as it came loose.

For a moment, all was silent save for the soft hum of machinery and the hissing of the gas vents. Then, with a deafening wail, alarms began blaring throughout the facility. Red emergency lights started flashing, their glow penetrating even the opacity of Lucas's barrier.

“We need to get out of here!” Lucas yelled. “Cover your mouth and head for the desk to get a mask.”

Lucas lowered the barrier. They hurried to the desk and pulled out gas masks to cover their faces. Once he was safe from the gas, he dashed to the containment unit. He could feel the raw power emanating from within, growing stronger as the crack in the capsule widened. With trembling hands, he grasped the unit and lifted it from its base. The Core pulsed within, its energy making the hair on his arms stand on end.

The moment the Core left its housing, the alarms increased in intensity. The emergency lights bathed the room in an otherworldly, pulsating glow.

"What now?" Lucas called out, cradling the containment unit against his chest. The weight of it surprised him, heavier than its size would suggest.

As if in answer, Meowth burst into the room, his fur standing on end with excitement. "Found the power room!" he yelled. "This way!"

They sprinted after Meowth, the corridor outside now a chaos of flashing lights and blaring sirens. Twice they had to duck into alcoves as squads of Team Flare grunts thundered past, shouting orders and radioing for backup. The sound of their boots echoed off the metal walls, adding to the cacophony.

Meowth led them to a massive chamber filled with humming generators and electrical equipment. "Knocking out the power should disable their security systems," he explained hurriedly. "It might even take down whatever's blocking your teleportation."

Lucas nodded grimly. "Do it."

With a gleeful cackle, Meowth extended his claws and leapt at the nearest control panel. Sparks flew as he tore into the delicate circuitry, the sharp scent of burning plastic filling the air.

The effect was immediate. The alarms cut off mid-wail, plunging the facility into an eerie silence. Emergency lights flickered on, casting long shadows across the room. The sudden quiet was almost as deafening as the alarms had been.

"Dante," Lucas called out, releasing the Gardevoir from his pokeball. "Try teleporting now."

Dante's eyes glowed as he reached out with his psychic powers. He disappeared and appeared a moment later. The psychic dampening field no longer impeded his abilities.

"Sabrina, you go first," Lucas insisted, still clutching the Core's containment unit. Its pulsing had become more erratic, with the crack widening visibly.

She opened her mouth to protest, but the sound of approaching footsteps cut her off. "Fine," she said. "But you'd better be right behind me."

Dante placed a hand on Sabrina's shoulder, and in a flash of light, they vanished. He looked around for Meowth, but the feline Pokemon had vanished.

“Where the hell are you, Meowth?” Lucas muttered. “You better return in the—”

The doors to the power room burst open with a resounding clang. Lucas whirled around, his heart pounding, as a tall, imposing figure strode in.

Lysandre's eyes blazed with fury as he took in the scene. His gaze locked onto the hooded figure holding the containment unit. "You," he snarled. "How dare you interfere with our plans!"

Lucas backed away, his grip tightening on the Core. The hood cast his face in shadow, concealing his identity. "It's over," he said, trying to keep his voice steady and disguised. "Whatever you were planning, it ends here."

Lysandre's lips curled into a sneer. "You understand nothing," he spat. "The world is rotting, and only I can save it. I won't let you interfere!"

With a gesture that spoke of years of training, Lysandre thrust his hand forward. A torrent of flame erupted from his palm, hurtling towards Lucas with terrifying speed. The heat was intense, causing the air to shimmer and distort.

Lucas's eyes widened. He quickly activated his aura and his barrier sprang to life just in time. The flames crashed against it; the heat was intense enough to make him stagger back. Sweat beaded on his brow as he struggled to maintain the protective field. The smell of singed fabric filled his nostrils as the edges of his hood began to smoulder.

Wave after wave of fire battered the barrier. Lucas could feel it weakening, the edges beginning to flicker and fade. His arms trembled with the effort of holding back Lysandre's relentless assault. The containment unit felt impossibly heavy in his arms, the Core within pulsing with barely restrained power.

Where was Dante? Panic began to set in as Lucas realised he couldn't keep this up much longer. The room around them was beginning to warp from the heat, metal surfaces glowing red-hot.

Just as his barrier began to crack, spider-web fissures spreading across its surface, Dante materialised beside him, eyes wide with alarm.

For a heart-stopping moment, the Gardevoir hesitated, his gaze fixed on Lysandre. Recognition and fear warred in his expression, though Lucas couldn't fathom why.

"Dante, please!" Lucas gasped, his barrier on the verge of collapse. The cracks were widening, and tendrils of flame were beginning to seep through.

The Gardevoir snapped out of his trance. His hand grasped Lucas's shoulder just as the barrier shattered with a sound like breaking glass.

The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of light and colour. Lucas felt a searing pain across his arms and face as Lysandre's flames found their mark in that final instant. The smell of burning flesh and hair filled his nostrils.

Then, with a disorienting lurch, he found himself sprawled on the plush carpet of his hotel room. The containment unit rolled from his grasp, coming to rest against a nearby chair with a soft thud.

Lucas lay there for a moment, gasping for breath. His skin stung where the flames had touched him, the burns painful enough that he groaned. The cool air of the room was a blessed relief after the inferno he'd just escaped.

Slowly, he pushed himself to his feet, wincing at the movement. Sabrina rushed to his side, her face etched with concern. She helped him remove the singed hood, revealing the extent of his minor injuries.

"Are you alright?" she demanded, examining the angry red marks on his skin.

Lucas nodded, his gaze drawn to the containment unit. The crack had widened further, with tendrils of energy now visibly seeping from within. The Core pulsed with an otherworldly light, its power barely contained.

"We did it," he said, a mixture of relief and disbelief in his voice. "We actually did it."

Sabrina's expression hardened. "This isn't over," she warned. "Lysandre won't give up so easily. And now he knows someone is actively working against him."

Lucas nodded grimly. "We need to figure out our next move," he agreed. "But first..." He gestured to the increasingly unstable containment unit. "I think we need to have a chat with our new friend here."

As if in response, the Core within pulsed with a surge of emerald light.

Dante hovered nearby, his eyes still wide with residual fear. Lucas made a mental note to ask him about his reaction to Lysandre later. For now, they had more pressing concerns.

"Meowth," Lucas called out, realising the feline Pokémon hadn't followed them. "I hope you made it out okay, buddy."

Sabrina placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "He's resourceful," she assured him. "I'm sure he'll find his way back to us."

Lucas nodded, hoping she was right. He turned his attention back to the Core, its pulsing growing more insistent by the moment. They'd taken a massive risk in acquiring it and now they needed to ensure it didn't fall into the wrong hands again.

"We should contact Looker," Sabrina suggested, already reaching for her communicator. "He needs to know what we've discovered."

As Sabrina made the call, Lucas stared at the containment unit, watching the cracks spread further across its surface. He realised the capsule must have been what prevented him from sensing the Core earlier. Its failure had released enough energy to finally alert him to its presence.

The adrenaline of their escape began to fade, leaving Lucas feeling drained and acutely aware of the burns covering his arms. He gingerly attempted to remove his top, wincing as some of the burnt fabric clung to his skin. With a grimace, he made his way to the bathroom and began gently washing off the charred remnants.

Sabrina entered, her face a mixture of concern and determination. Without a word, she began helping him clean the burns. She reached for a burn salve, carefully spreading it across the worst of his injuries. The coolness provided instant relief, drawing a sigh from Lucas's lips.

"You know," Lucas said, watching her as she wrapped his arms in bandages, "all this action has made me aroused."

She glanced up at him, an eyebrow raised. "You're weird. Why did I fall for you again?"

"I'm irresistible?" Lucas offered with a lopsided grin.

Sabrina shook her head, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "That can't be it. I must have hit my head and suffered some brain damage."

Lucas shrugged, wincing slightly at the movement. "Whatever works. I still got the girl."

Sabrina rolled her eyes. "You're impossible.”

The moment of levity passed, and their eyes were drawn back to the containment unit in the other room. As they watched, the capsule finally shattered, releasing the green, slime-like Core. It floated up, briefly surveying its surroundings before rushing over to Lucas and into his arms. He cradled the small, squishy... being in his hands. Could it even be considered a Pokémon?

"What are you going to do with it?" Sabrina asked. "Take it back to Zygarde or hang onto it for now?"

"I think I'll hang onto it until I've collected them all," Lucas replied. "The Core should be able to communicate with the other Cores and Cells when it's close enough, which can only help in locating them."

The Core nodded, bumping its head against Lucas' chest as if agreeing. Suddenly, Lucas felt a strange sensation in his chest, and something emerged from it. A small green cube with a hexagonal shape materialised before him.

"What the hell?" Lucas gasped.

The Core merged into the cube, disappearing without even a farewell. The cube flashed once before merging back into his chest.

"That was... unusual," Sabrina commented. "A gift from Zygarde, perhaps?"

Lucas frowned. "The mutt could have warned me."

At least he now had a place to store the Cores and Cells. It would make searching for the remaining ones easier without worrying about them wandering off.

They moved into the living room. Lucas's eyelids were heavy, and he felt like collapsing onto the couch and sleeping. Even the burns couldn't override the fatigue washing over him.

Sabrina yawned, her face mirroring his exhaustion. "We need to get some sleep. It's been a long night."

"You go ahead," Lucas said, rubbing his eyes. "I'm going to wait a bit for Meowth to return."

Sabrina kissed him before retreating to the bedroom. Lucas moved to the glass door leading to the balcony and stepped outside. He sat at the table, gazing at the brilliant lights illuminating the city. At this moment, he imagined police were heading for Lysandre's cafe, following Sabrina's tip to Looker about Team Flare's hideout. Somehow, he doubted Lysandre would be there to greet them.

With his adrenaline subsiding, his thoughts returned to the last encounter with Lysandre. The revelation that the man was also an Aura Guardian was shocking, to say the least. He hadn't known aura could be manipulated to conjure flames. Would he gain similar abilities as he progressed through the Aura Guardian profession?

How had Lysandre hidden his aura abilities from the church? Their presence was just as prevalent in Kalos as in the United Kanto region. Were there others out there keeping their aura abilities secret? He supposed there were only two choices upon awakening to aura abilities: move to the Rota Kingdom or keep them hidden.

Now that he had revealed his abilities to Lysandre, he would need to be more cautious. He was grateful for Meowth's suggestion to conceal his identity. Otherwise, he might be in far more trouble at this point.

The gentle prod of a paw against his cheek roused Lucas from his slumber. He blinked, disoriented, as the pre-dawn light painted the Lumiose skyline in muted hues. His neck ached from the awkward position he'd fallen asleep in, slumped over the balcony table.

"Rise and shine, partner," Meowth's familiar voice chirped. "You look like you've had quite the night."

Lucas straightened, wincing as his stiff muscles protested. "Meowth? Where have you been?"

The feline Pokémon's whiskers twitched with a mix of mischief and sheepishness. "Ah, well, that's quite the tale. You see, I got a bit... sidetracked."

As Meowth recounted his adventure, Lucas listened with growing disbelief. The cat had sensed another hidden item deep within the Team Flare base and couldn't resist the temptation to investigate.

"I was just about to grab it when Lysandre showed up," Meowth explained, his tail swishing. "I thought it might be prudent to find an alternate escape route, you know?"

"Prudent? That's a big word for you."

Meowth huffed indignantly. "I'll have you know I'm quite the intellectual. Anyway, I had to hole up in this tiny ventilation shaft. Team Flare grunts were scurrying about like Rattata in a cheese factory."

The feline's eyes gleamed as he continued, "Then the police showed up. It was chaos, I tell you! But when I spotted Looker, I knew my ticket out had arrived. I got his attention and here I am, safe and sound."

Lucas frowned. "Looker's here?"

"In the flesh. He's in the living room now. Meowth. Sabrina's playing hostess, serving tea, and all that."

With a groan, Lucas pushed himself to his feet. The events of the previous night came rushing back, along with the dull ache of his burns.

In the living room, Detective Looker sat perched on the edge of an armchair, his hands wrapped around a steaming cup of tea. Sabrina, looking far more put-together than Lucas felt, was seated across from him.

"Ah, there you are," Looker said, his sharp eyes taking in Lucas's dishevelled appearance. "I was just filling in your companion on the night's events."

Lucas sank onto the couch beside Sabrina, who discreetly squeezed his hand. "What happened after we left?"

Looker's expression turned grim. "We raided the base, but it seems Team Flare was prepared for such an eventuality. The vital information had been scrubbed from their computers. Still," he added, a note of satisfaction creeping into his voice, "we managed to gather a substantial amount of data on their operations. And we apprehended quite a few of their members."

The detective paused, his gaze sharpening. "There was one casualty. A woman's body was found in the burnt-out power room."

Lucas and Sabrina exchanged a glance, a silent communication passing between them. Looker, ever observant, didn't miss the look.

"You know something about this woman?" he asked, leaning forward.

Sabrina cleared her throat. "We... encountered her in the facility. She called herself Aliana."

Lucas nodded, carefully omitting any mention of his aura abilities as he recounted their confrontation with the Team Flare scientist. "She released some kind of gas into the room. We managed to incapacitate her but in the chaos of our escape..."

"I see," Looker mused, stroking his chin. "And you say Lysandre himself was there?"

"Yes," Lucas confirmed, a chill running down his spine at the memory. "He was responsible for the fire in the power room. He used some kind of fire ability. Like an Aura Guardian."

Looker's eyes widened, a spark of excitement lighting them. "Aura abilities? Now that's interesting. If Lysandre is indeed an Aura Guardian, we could involve the church in the search. Their resources would be invaluable, and they are always zealots in chasing down the sinners."

The detective's enthusiasm made Lucas uneasy. He'd been so focused on escaping that he hadn't considered the implications of revealing Lysandre's abilities. Now, he worried about what might happen if his secret came to light.

"What happens now?" Sabrina asked, steering the conversation away from aura abilities.

Looker's expression sobered. "Team Flare has been dealt a significant blow, but Lysandre and several key members remain at large. We'll continue our investigation, of course, but..." He trailed off, fixing them with a serious look. "It might be best if you two left the region, at least until things settle down."

Lucas felt a mixture of relief and disappointment at the suggestion. Part of him wanted to see this through, to uncover whatever Lysandre was planning. But the rational part of his mind knew Looker was right. They'd already taken enormous risks.

"We were going to return home soon anyway," Sabrina said.

Looker nodded. He drained the last of his tea and stood. "Well, I should be going. There's still much to do. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. And please," he added, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "do be careful. Lysandre sounds like a dangerous man. He may even be the leader of Team Flare, based on what we have uncovered."

With that ominous warning, the detective took his leave. As the door closed behind him, a heavy silence fell over the room.

Lucas slumped back into the couch, exhaustion washing over him anew. "What a mess," he muttered.

Sabrina leaned against him, her presence a comforting warmth. "We did what we had to do. And we got the Core."

As if on cue, Lucas felt a strange vibration in his chest where the mysterious cube had merged with him. A reminder of the new responsibility he'd taken on.

"I know," he said. "But now what? Do we really just leave?"

Meowth, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, piped up. "If you ask me, a strategic retreat sounds mighty fine right about now. Besides," he added with a grin, "think of all the new treasures waiting to be found in other regions!"

Despite everything, Lucas couldn't help but chuckle. "Always thinking with your paws, aren't you?"

Sabrina stood, stretching languidly. “I think I have had enough of the Kalos region. We got what we came here looking for, so I think we should return home. Don’t you have a new Pokemon on your hands?”

“That’s right,” Lucas replied. “My Eevee has hatched. I think returning to Kanto and focusing on my Pokemon Breeding business for the time being would be the best thing.”

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, things settle down as Lucas and Sabrina return to Kanto.

Thanks for reading.
