Naruto: Amongst the Whirling Tides Chapter 30

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. The first chapter of the week will be out tomorrow.

Chapter 30

Naruto sat on his bed, the weight of recent events heavy on his mind. Following Killer B's capture yesterday, he was up before dawn tirelessly experimenting with his chains, determined to unlock their full potential. Knowing that Kumo had discovered their presence on the island, Mei and Jiraiya were meeting with the council to discuss their next course of action.

He had been instructed to rest, but he felt there was no time to waste. He planned to use the time to improve as much as possible while he still had the opportunity.

"This is more like it," Naruto whispered, his focus on the chain in front of him.

The gold chain appeared to defy the laws of physics, seamlessly shifting between tangible and intangible states as Naruto honed his control over it. After hours of tireless effort, he had discovered a plethora of functions within the chains, each of which provided a distinct advantage in different situations. His chains could be in various states, ranging from intangible to tangible, invisible to half-tangible. The latter was their previous state prior to their transformation into six distinct chains.

He had been working hard to resolve the latter issue because he was concerned that others seeing and interacting with his chains would have a negative impact on several of his abilities, including his taijutsu. If he lost the ability to predict his opponent's movements, it would have a significant impact on his fighting style.

Despite the added strain on his chakra reserves, Naruto found the trade-off worthwhile as he considered the tactical advantages these newfound abilities provided. The ability to manipulate his chains with such precision gave him an edge in combat, enhancing his combat prowess.

As he rose from his bed and made his way to his desk, a sense of urgency gripped him. The looming threat of an invasion underscored the need to prioritise his training and focus on honing his skills. Naruto began jotting down a list of areas that demanded his attention.

Sage Mode, Taijutsu, Wind Release Rasenshuriken, Hiraishin, Tailed Beast Mode, and his chains were all critical components of his arsenal that needed more refinement and mastery. Each entry on the list represented a step towards realising his full potential and protecting his village from imminent danger.

Sage Mode - It was only halfway complete; he needed to learn how to fully utilise its abilities.

Taijutsu - It was an area he had not been focusing on recently, and his style needed to be overhauled or completely changed. Fukasaku had told him about Frog Kata, a fighting style that brought out the best in Sage Mode. Did he switch to Frog Kata, or did he incorporate it into his own style to create something entirely new?

Wind: Release Rasenshuriken - He had mastered the wind elemental transformation sufficiently, thanks to his clones, to begin working on his idea to create his own version of the Rasengan. It would be a potent weapon in his arsenal, that Sage Mode would further strengthen.

Hiraishin - He needed to finish mastering the technique because it would be a valuable asset to have in his arsenal. This included situations outside of combat. He could contact the Suna remnants and see if they would like to join Uzushio.

Tailed Beast Mode - In order to fully utilise the transformation, he needed to improve his relationship with Kurama, as Killer B had done. This was probably not something he could do in the short term. He needed to create the device that he had promised, allowing Kurama to interact outside of his mindscape.

His chains - Determining the rest of his chains' abilities was also a priority. He had to assume that his mother only had his best interests in mind when she experimented on him, and that unlocking their abilities would only benefit him.

Naruto placed the pen down and glanced at the time. With a thought, he sent his awareness downstairs. To his surprise, he discovered that he had unexpected guests.

He went downstairs and into the kitchen. Hinata was at the stove instead of Karin. She was dressed in an orange apron and hummed softly while mixing something in a bowl, captivating Naruto with an indescribable rush of emotions. He could easily get used to seeing her in the kitchen every morning.

"Don't just stand there staring at Hinata," Sakura chided. "Join us at the table."

Sakura was seated with Ino, Karin, Choji, Tenten, and Lee. They had managed to squeeze in extra chairs around the table.

"Why has my kitchen been invaded? Hinata, you're excused. As for the rest of you..." Naruto's voice trailed off as he gestured pointedly towards the doorway.

"How cold," Ino sighed. "Why does Hinata get special treatment? Is it because of her massive—"

Naruto cut her off by tossing a bread roll at her, which bounced off her forehead.

Ino shot him a glare. "How can you be so rude when I shared my family’s meditation technique with you?"

"Let's not forget how I paid for it in the most embarrassing way possible," Naruto retorted. "I don't owe you anything."

"Hello, Naruto," Hinata greeted, cheeks flushing. "I hope it's alright that we dropped by unannounced."

Naruto waved it off. "No worries, Hinata. Just as long as you're sharing that incredible meal you're cooking."

"It'll be ready soon," Hinata told him. "Choji brought over some ingredients from his family's restaurant."

"Well, at least he's got some manners," Naruto remarked. "I was afraid he'd raid my cupboards and eat everything."

"I'd never do that to you, Naruto," Choji mumbled, mouth full of bread.

Tenten surveyed the kitchen. "Your new house looks great, Naruto. Karin has quite the eye for interior design."

Karin beamed at the praise.

Naruto couldn't help but agree with Tenten's observation. During his absence, Karin transformed the entire house with her impeccable taste and decorating skills. Maybe she should give up her Shinobi career and go into interior design.

Neutral tones dominated the colour scheme in the house. Soft tones of beige, cream, and grey create a calming atmosphere throughout the room. The walls were painted a warm, sandy hue, and the floors are made of light-coloured hardwood or bamboo.

The furniture was mostly made of wood, which added a natural feel to the decor. The dining table is made of sturdy oak, and the chairs have simple, clean lines. In the living room, a plush sofa made of creamy linen fabric sits on top of a large hand-woven rug. In front of it, there was a coffee table made of reclaimed wood.

The large windows allow plenty of natural light to filter into the home, highlighting the beauty of the wood furnishings and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Overall, the house exuded a sense of tranquilly and simplicity, making it the perfect place to unwind and relax.

“It looks great, Karin,” Naruto said. “So, how much did you spend from my wallet?”

Karin looked away sheepishly. “There's still some ryo left.”

Naruto narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean by ‘some’?”

“I used as much as I thought necessary,” Karin said, crossing her arms defensively.

“Stop badgering her,” Sakura intervened. “The amount spent on furnishing the house doesn't matter. If you don’t like it, you shouldn't have put her in charge.”

“I would give you my wallet, Sakura-chan,” Lee chimed in, giving her a thumbs up. “Once we get married and have our own house.”

Sakura sighed. “Please stop bringing up marriage, Lee. It’s embarrassing. I never said I would date you.”

Naruto chuckled. “I wonder what their children would be like? A bunch of pink-haired terrors dressed in green spandex; running around and shouting about youth. Maybe they'll inherit the infamous bushy brows as well.”

Sakura cracked her knuckles, preparing to lay him out cold on the floor. The rumbling of footsteps on the stairs saved him from a beating, and Kushina appeared in the kitchen a moment later, carrying a squirrel in her arms.

“Hungry,” she announced, taking the last available chair. She placed the squirrel on the ground, and it scampered across the floor, climbing onto the refrigerator. “Hi Hinata. Are you moving in?”

Hinata fumbled the plate she was carrying and almost dropped it.

Ino laughed. “Yes, she's going to be sharing a room with Naruto.”

“Okay,” Kushina replied, accepting Ino’s words at face value.

Naruto glared at Ino. “Don’t joke about such things. She’s going to believe anything you say.”

Hinata served up platefuls of bacon, sausages, and pancakes, and they all dug into their food. As they ate, his friends questioned him about what happened yesterday, and Naruto gave them a brief summary of the events. They expressed amazement when they heard about Jiraiya’s fight with the Hachibi.

After capturing Killer B, they brought him back to the village and locked him up in their prison. Jiraiya had placed a containment seal on Killer B that should restrain him temporarily. They would have to come up with a more permanent solution, though, as he wasn’t someone that could be easily contained. Anko was already interrogating him, but he didn’t know if she was making any progress.

Since Killer B was most likely gathering information for Kuro, they had to know what information he had, as they could be facing an invasion in the near future. That would be a nightmarish scenario, as Kuro would easily outmatch them. Although Kuro didn’t have the same quality of Shinobi compared to Konoha, they made up for it with sheer numbers. Not to mention, they also had another jinchuuriki among their ranks.

The villagers had returned from their evacuation to the sea cave, but there was still a sense of unease among them. They were aware that an intruder on the island could mean more trouble ahead.

When Kushina returned, she was still upset over Bubbles. Naruto felt bad for her and came up with a simple solution. He had transformed one of his clones into an exact replica of Bubbles. It would remain with her indefinitely, as long as it wasn’t struck hard enough to be destroyed. The clone would also be able to monitor her and alert him if she was ever in danger.

“Who knew Jiraiya was such a formidable Shinobi?” Tenten mused.

“He is one of the Sannin,” Sakura reminded her. “The same as your idol, Tsunade.”

“I know that. But he always seemed to be so goofy. It’s hard to picture him taking any fight seriously.” Tenten turned to Naruto. “Aren't you forgetting to mention something?”

“What do you mean?”

"Neji told me about the transformation you underwent,” Tenten said, her eyes filled with curiosity. “Is it true that you have mastered Sage Mode like Jiraiya?”

The others paused in their eating, their attention now fully on Naruto. The news of Jiraiya’s abilities had just sunk in, and now they were faced with the possibility of Naruto reaching similar heights.

Naruto shrugged. “I’ve been working on mastering Sage Mode, but I still have a lot to learn and test out its full potential.”

“I’ll never catch up to you,” Sakura sighed, feeling a twinge of envy.

Naruto shook his head. “Don’t compare yourself to me. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. And believe me, the path I’ve walked to get here hasn’t been easy. My childhood wasn’t particularly pleasant."

His words hung in the air, reminding them of the struggles he had faced.

“I’m just grateful you’re on our side,” Choji said, breaking the tension with a smile. “I wouldn’t want to face you in a serious fight. That would be terrifying.”

Ino shivered dramatically. “Especially if he’s wearing that bright orange outfit. Now, that’s truly frightening.”

Laughter filled the room, and Naruto rolled his eyes. “I’ve retired the jumpsuit, okay? It wasn’t that bad.”

Suddenly, a thought struck him. “Hinata, how’s Shikamaru doing? Any update on his condition?”

The mood shifted, and a sombre silence settled over the group. Choji’s expression turned grim, and Hinata’s smile was tinged with sadness.

“He’s deteriorating,” Hinata admitted. “His aggression is worsening, and he even lashed out at a guard. We have to retrain him until we find a cure.”

Naruto’s frustration bubbled to the surface. This wasn’t how he had envisioned things turning out. Shikamaru, who was normally so laid-back, was the last person he expected to turn violent. How potent was this serum that it could alter someone’s personality so dramatically? He wished they had never gone to the island because it had opened up a can of worms that now threatened Shikamaru's life. The village already had enough problems to deal with, let alone find a cure for him.

“What about the plants you brought back?” Naruto pressed. “Any breakthroughs that could help him?”

“There are promising leads, but we lack the resources and expertise to turn them into a viable treatment. We need proper lab equipment and skilled scientists to make it happen.”

“Don’t we have any scientists in the village?” Naruto asked, feeling a pang of desperation. “What about Tsunade?”

Hinata grimaced. “Tsunade’s expertise lies more in medical treatments than scientific research. We need specialists for this.”

“As much as we want to help Shikamaru,” Tenten interjected. “We can’t ignore the looming threat of a possible invasion. We have to prioritise the village first.”

As everyone else dispersed to attend to their duties, Lee lingered behind to have a conversation with Naruto.

"I'd like to spar with you to gauge my taijutsu progress after my injury," Lee expressed earnestly.

"Absolutely," Naruto agreed. "I've been neglecting my taijutsu lately, so it'll be good to test where I stand as well."

"Yosh! I'll meet you at the training grounds," Lee said, throwing a few punches before dashing off.

"I can't wait to see you two in action!" Kushina exclaimed, leaping out of her chair and mimicking Lee's punches with enthusiasm.

“Bloodthirsty little thing,” Sakura joked, ruffling Kushina’s hair. “Do you mind if I tag along? I've been developing a grading system to evaluate a Shinobi's combat skills and need more data. My goal is to assign scores to our Shinobi, aiding the village in assessing our collective strength and tailoring individualised training programmes."

Naruto regarded Sakura with interest. "What inspired you to pursue this?"

"Tsunade wanted me to engage my intellect more," Sakura revealed, pulling a face. "She challenged me to delve into a research project, and the idea intrigued me."

"It's a challenging task," Naruto cautioned. "Measuring the strength of Chunin and Genin is straightforward, but as you climb the ranks, the power dynamics become more complex and unpredictable. There are so many unknown techniques and conditions that make accurate assessments challenging."

"I'm aware of the challenges. I'm starting with the basics, so it should be manageable.”

Naruto nodded in agreement. "Let me change into my gear, and we can head out."

Ten minutes later, Naruto and Lee faced off on the training grounds, both preparing themselves for the upcoming spar. Naruto stretched his muscles, feeling the tension release as he limbered up, while Lee showcased his impressive flexibility with a series of splits that made Naruto wince in admiration.

“How do you want to play this?” Naruto asked. “Should we spar with only taijutsu, or should we add other abilities to the mix?”

“I want you to stick to taijutsu only,” Sakura ordered. “It’s easier to measure when I have a base line without other abilities interfering with it.”

"Since when did you become the boss?" Naruto teased.

Lee, always eager to please her, gave Sakura a thumbs up in agreement. "We will follow your lead, Sakura-chan."

Sakura acknowledged Lee with a grateful smile, which seemed to energize him even more as he stretched with renewed enthusiasm.

Naruto couldn't help but roll his eyes at the interaction between Lee and Sakura. "Looks like I'm outnumbered here. I can’t compete against the power of love."

Sakura sent him a warning look.

"You've got this, big brother," Kushina cheered, giving Naruto the boost he needed to face off against Lee.

Naruto smiled. “That’s all the encouragement I needed.”

They performed the Seal of Confrontation and the fight commenced.

Naruto extended his gold chain out and attached it to Lee’s leg, using it as a strategic advantage in their fight. He wasn’t going to tell them that he was using them, as he considered it a part of his fighting style, and he didn’t think it was cheating. Since he was only facing a single opponent, he wasn’t going to use his clones; instead, he would rely on his counter stance to defeat Lee.

With a sudden burst of speed, Lee launched a series of lightning-fast strikes, his fists and feet a blur of motion as he closed the distance between them. Naruto deftly dodged and weaved, using his footwork and foresight to evade the onslaught of blows. He didn’t counterattack, but instead he concentrated on figuring out Lee’s taijutsu style, and exploiting any weaknesses he found.

To his surprise, he found it difficult to read Lee's mind, as he appeared to operate solely on instinct. His body had been trained to the point where he did not have to think about his next move because it knew what to do. However, Naruto was quick and experienced enough to keep up with him. They exchanged blows for the next minute, with neither gaining an advantage.

Lee's speed increased unexpectedly, catching Naruto off guard and forcing him to retreat. Naruto remained composed, taking advantage of Lee's momentum to execute a well-timed takedown. Naruto attempted to secure a submission hold while grappling on the ground, but Lee's agility and evasiveness made the task difficult.

With a deft movement, Lee pressed his hands on the ground and performed a hand-stand. Then he proceeded to spin around, windmilling his legs, making it hard for him to get close. Lee went on the offensive, and Naruto had to focus on defending against a flurry of kicks targeting his midsection. Even when he was standing on his hands, Lee's speed was incredible.

Naruto blocked a powerful kick with his crossed arms, feeling the impact reverberate through his body. He grunted as he was sent sliding several feet across the ground. He shook his arms, feeling the sting from the blow.

Lee pushed off his hands and returned to standing.

“This is a great fight, Naruto,” Lee said, grinning. “I’m not going to be able to defeat you if I don’t go all out.”

“Of course you have been holding out,” Naruto sighed. “I feel insulted. I expect you to be serious from the start.”

Lee nodded. “Apologies, Naruto. Your Taijutsu is far better than I expected.”

The longer the fight lasted, the more unpredictable Lee became, making it difficult for Naruto to anticipate his next attack. Furthermore, Lee's taijutsu style appeared flawless, with no weaknesses for him to exploit. It became apparent that Lee was the better taijutsu fighter, and he would lose if he continued on like this. The only chance he had of beating him was to do something unpredictable.

The clash of wills between the two fighters reached a critical juncture, with each fighter pushing themselves to their limits in a test of strength, agility, and tactical prowess. As he felt himself losing the fight, Naruto tried an unexpected move to end the fight in his favour.

He materialised a chain attached to Lee's leg, attempting to trip him up, but underestimated Lee's strength and the chain's effectiveness. Despite his efforts, the chain failed to alter the course of Lee's powerful roundhouse kick, catching Naruto off guard and sending him crashing to the ground from the impact.

Naruto tried to shake off the blow, but felt too dizzy to focus properly. He raised a hand in surrender. "One more hit like that, and I'll be in the infirmary."

Lee grinned. "You're incredible, Naruto. If you weren't limited to taijutsu, I wouldn't stand a chance. But did you do something to my leg before I struck you? I felt as if something was attached to it."

Naruto grimaced. "I tried to be sneaky, but it backfired on me."

After they performed the Seal of Reconciliation, Sakura checked on Naruto, while Kushina rushed over, showing concern for his well-being.

“I’m fine,” Naruto reassured her.

“That was a great fight,” Kushina enthused. “Teach me how to fight like that.”

Naruto smiled and reached out to pat Kushina’s head. But he was still dizzy, and he ended up nearly groping Sakura’s thigh instead.

“I’m taking you to the infirmary to get you checked out,” Sakura said, resisting the urge to hit him and make his condition worse.

Naruto donned his Chunin uniform and made his way to the administrative office. He had been summoned by the council to speak about his time at Mt Myoboku. At least, that’s what he assumed it was about.

The meeting room for the council was on the second floor. It was the first time he had spoken in front of them, as he usually talked to Jiraiya or Mei directly. He walked into the room and stood in the centre of the room. The council was seated in raised seats, which was designed to make them look more authoritative.

Mei and Jiraiya were seated directly in front of him, separate from the council members. His eyes widened when he saw Fukasaku and Shima standing on Jiriaya’s shoulders. He hadn’t been aware they were still around.

“Naruto,” Mei greeted him. “Thank you for coming so promptly. There are a number of topics I wish to discuss. First, about your time at Mt Myoboku. You managed to master Sage Mode, which is an incredible feat considering how little time you have. Do you know how strong you are in terms of your combat strength?”

Naruto took a moment to consider her words. “Not really. I haven’t had time to explore my abilities to the fullest, as they are all still new to me. I’m also having a problem focusing on a certain style, since I have so many abilities now.”

Jiraiya frowned. “We need to address that as soon as possible. I recommend that we set up some spars with some of us so he can really test his abilities.”

Naruto grinned. He didn’t have a problem with that suggestion.

Minato spoke up. “I should have been focusing on training Naruto, but you have kept me busy, teleporting all over the mainland, purchasing supplies for the village.”

“That’s going to change,” Jiraiya said. “No one is leaving the village unless Mei or I have given our approval until we have dealt with the incoming threat. That includes missions as well.”

Mei nodded in agreement. “We need to shore up our village defences and make sure our troops are ready.”

Fukasaku jumped off Jiraiya's shoulder and landed on the table, catching their attention. “Shima and I have agreed to stay here to continue training Naruto on how to fully utilise Sage Mode.”

“Thank you. That will be of great help to us,” Mei told him.

“Even if Naruto’s Sage Mode is new, this is a massive boon for us,” Tsume said, showing her fangs. “Having three Shinobi that can use Senjutsu is going to be a massive advantage.”

“Don’t rely on me to use it,” Minato warned. “Entering Sage Mode is easy enough, since I have access to such large chakra reserves. But I find it difficult to maintain for longer than a minute, and it takes me time to enter it again. This may be a drawback from being reanimated.”

This prompted a discussion among the council about the village’s Shinobi and their capabilities. Naruto yawned and stared up at the ceiling, completely bored. It went on for so long that he finally had enough.

“Can I go now?” Naruto snapped. “It seems like I’m superfluous to this conversation.”

His words silenced the council, and they turned to stare at him.

“There is no need to be rude,” Hiashi said sternly.

Naruto snorted. “I beg to differ. This is a waste of my time.”

“Sorry, Naruto,” Mei said. “We went off on a tangent. Is there anything else you wish to share with us about your new abilities?”

Naruto looked around. The council members consisted of Tsunade, Hiashi, Inoichi, Choza, Tsume, Anko, Ao, Guy, and his father. He was sure that he could trust them all. Even if he didn’t, it wasn’t like he could stealthily use his chains to gauge their trust level, since he still needed to master the gold chain.

“Well, I made an interesting discovery before I returned to the village,” Naruto said.

He summoned his chains out and saw the surprise on the faces of the council members.

“What are these chains, Naruto?” Jiraiya leaned forward in interest. “I have never seen anything like them. They almost look a little like Adamantine Sealing Chains, but are too different to actually be them.”

“I don't know,” Naruto said. He didn’t want to get into what his mother might have done to him in front of the council. “The chains appeared when I first entered Sage Mode. Or maybe it was simply the act of absorbing nature energy into my body that triggered them.”

"Could it be your subconscious mind responding to your desires?" Anko mused, her voice muffled by the dango in her mouth. "Those chains do look quite capable of restraining someone. Is there something you wish to share about your sexual preferences? Fear not, for anything disclosed here shall remain within these walls."

Naruto smirked. “I created the chains to better help me restrain disobedient wenches so I can give them a proper spanking to punish them for their unruliness.”

Anko grinned. "Promises, promises."

Mei cleared her throat. "Miss Mitarashi, please maintain decorum in this council room, or you will be asked to leave."

Anko pouted and settled back in her seat, nibbling on her dango.

"Mr. Uzumaki," Hiashi inquired, "do you understand the true nature of these chains? Are they merely physical manifestations, or do they possess additional abilities?"

Naruto hesitated briefly,. "The gold chain grants me a limited ability to delve into the minds of those it touches. Gamamaru believes each chain may harbour a different ability, though I have yet to uncover them."

Inoichi appeared intrigued. "To what extent can you read someone's mind with this chain?"

"It seems to depend on the individual's mental discipline and whether they have training to shield their thoughts," Naruto explained. "Although, I haven’t conducted enough experiments to provide a definitive answer."

“I see,” Inoichi replied thoughtfully. “The inherent danger that their tailed beasts pose prevents the Yamanaka clan from entering the minds of jinchuuriki.”

Naruto nodded in understanding. "So, interrogating someone like Killer B would be challenging."

“That’s right,” Inoichi said, before sharing a glance with the other council members. "Would an unconscious target be more susceptible to your ability?"

Naruto shook his head. "I don’t think so. My method primarily reads surface thoughts, so an unconscious target would yield little information. It might be more effective to prompt the target to actively think about the desired information."

“Should we try it out?” Jiriaya asked, looking around. “Any volunteers?”

Jiraiya, noticing the lack of volunteers, stood up and gestured for Naruto to proceed.

Naruto eyed him with amusement. “I don't know if my ability will work on you. Doesn’t it require you to have an actual thought in your head for it to work?”

Tsunade chuckled. “He has a point, Jiraiya.”

Jiraiya, unimpressed, urged Naruto to proceed with the demonstration.

Naruto deftly wrapped the gold chain around Jiraiya’s leg, his focus honed on delving into the depths of his godfather's thoughts. A perplexed expression crossed his face as he sifted through the chaotic jumble of thoughts that seemed to revolve predominantly around scantily clad women. It didn't take long for Naruto to figure out that Jiraiya was deliberately concocting a mental smokescreen to throw him off track.

“Nice try, Jiraiya,” Naruto muttered, determined to pierce through the facade and unearth the genuine memory buried within the labyrinth of distractions.

As the veil of deception lifted, a vivid recollection emerged, portraying a mischievous young Jiraiya causing mayhem in a classroom, much to the chagrin of a blonde-haired girl who bore a striking resemblance to Tsunade. The scene painted a nostalgic picture of a carefree era, showcasing Jiraiya's innate knack for mischief and humour.

Naruto confidently identified the true memory, earning a nod of approval from Jiraiya, before relaying the outcome to the council.

“Would you be able to perform the interrogation on Killer B, Naruto?” Inoichi asked. “Since your method of mind reading is unique and you are also a jinchuuriki, it should be a lot safer for you. We need the information that he has about what Kumo is up to.”

“I don’t see why not,” Naruto said. “It’s worth a try, at least.”

“Then we will leave it in your hands,” Mei declared. “Anko, you will assist him in any way you can.”

Anko waggled her eyebrows. “Anything?”

Naruto felt a chill run down his spine. He started backing out of the room before taking off in a sprint.

“Get back here, Naruto,” Anko sang, following close behind him.

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Naruto interrogates Killer B, and continues his training.

Thanks for reading.
