Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 32

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. The battle with Zero doesn’t go as expected, and Vulpix finally hatches from her egg.

Chapter 32

The audience had regained its voice and was now fully behind Lucas, cheering him on. They also appeared to dislike Zero, who came across as creepy.

Meowth whispered into his ear. "Should we implement our plan?”

"Now is as good a time as ever."

Lucas had encountered issues in his matches where the majority of his opponents were able to communicate via their bond, putting him at a significant disadvantage. Some of his losses were caused by opposing trainers and their Pokemon reacting quickly to the commands he gave to his team. He devised a temporary solution to this problem, which should suffice until his bond with his Pokemon deepens enough to allow him to communicate with them telepathically. But he hadn’t tested it out in a real match yet.

Icarus was summoned onto the stage, where he clacked his beak at his opponent before taking flight into the air. Even though Icaria needed more battle experience, he decided not to put her up against Zero, as he had a strong feeling he would be a formidable opponent.

“Mienfoo.”

The Pokemon surprised Lucas when it charged directly at him, leaping into the air and delivering a powerful flying kick. But, just as the attack was about to land, a barrier appeared in front of Lucas, deflecting it. The audience gasped at the Pokémon's audacity and booed Zero, who appeared to be amused by Mienfoo's behaviour.

"What the hell?" Lucas looked to the referee, shaken by the unexpected attack. "Are you going to let my opponent attack me like that?

The referee gave Zero a frown. "If you do that again, you will forfeit the match and be kicked out of the arena."

Zero gave a bow. “Forgive me. My Mienfoo appears to be a little too eager.”

Icarus, who had witnessed the attack but was unable to react in time, flew down in outrage.

The referee quickly raised his flag. “The match has started.”

[The match between Icarus and Mienfoo has commenced.]

Lucas whispered a command to Meowth, who then relayed it to Icarus.

He wasn’t speaking like a human, but communicating like any other Pokemon. This was Lucas’ solution to his communication problem during a match. Meowth would relay the commands, and the opposing trainer wouldn't be able to understand what he was saying. Only the opposing Pokemon would understand what was being said, but Meowth and the rest of the team had devised alternate words to replace the names of their moves. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was good enough for the time being.

Icarus was so angry that he ignored Meowth's command, which caused him to make a mistake and give Mienfoo the initiative.

[Mienfoo used Fakeout.]

Mienfoo clapped his hands together, creating a sound wave that distorted the air as he shot towards Icarus and hit him in the head. The move was so quick that it was difficult to avoid.

[Icarus flinched.]

"Watch out, Icarus!" Lucas shouted.

Icarus plummeted from the air and landed on stage. Mienfoo drew back his hand and delivered a hard slap to Icarus' head, sending him into a deeper rage.

[Mienfoo used Pound]

[Icarus' condition has fallen to Excellent (5/6)]

Lucas had allowed Zero to take the initiative by interfering with Icarus' state of mind before the battle even began. He needed to regain control of the fight before Mienfoo defeated Icarus without even putting up a fight.

Meowth took the initiative and shouted something at Icarus, which appeared to calm him down.

Lucas nodded in approval and continued to relay more orders to Meowth.

[Icarus used Double Team]

Icarus' form blurred, and more than a dozen copies of himself emerged, forming a circle around Mienfoo. It appeared confused for a moment because it couldn’t tell which Icarus was the real one, but that confusion seemed to vanish as he moved towards one of them in particular.

The Icarus it was targeting took flight before it could strike, and the rest of the illusions vanished. Mienfoo's trainer had helped him see through the illusion, but his hesitation allowed Icarus to recover.

[Icarus used Work Up]

Icarus' body was enveloped in a layer of normal-type energy.

[Icarus’ Attack and Special Attack have increased by one stage.]

Meowth gave another instruction, emphasising it by waving his paws in the air. By this point, the audience had realised what was going on and began cheering on the Pokemon. They had never seen anything like it before, where a Pokemon assisted his trainer in commanding a fight.

[Icarus used Air Cutter.]

Icarus snapped his wings, sending several blades of wind down at his opponent.

[Mienfoo used Detect.]

Instead of dodging, a bright flash appeared above Mienfoo's head, and the Air Cutter vanished into thin air. The move neutralised any attack aimed at it, but it was dangerous because it failed fifty percent of the time when used consecutively. Furthermore, if the user was hit by the attack, they took one and a half times as much damage.

Lucas frowned and relayed another order.

[Icarus used Work Up.]

[Icarus’ Attack and Special Attack have increased to stage two.]

Work Up could be stacked multiple times to significantly boost the user's stats, but the effect only lasted a short time, so you had to act quickly before it disappeared.

Since Icarus was in the air, it appeared that he would be able to continue spamming Work Up without encountering any resistance, but Mienfoo used a move that changed the game. It was something Lucas was most concerned about because it would eliminate Icarus's aerial advantage.

[Mienfoo used Acrobatics.]

Mienfoo leapt into the air, reaching the same height as Icarus and hovering in midair, seemingly defying gravity.

Acrobatics was a flying-type move that allowed a non-flying Pokemon to move through the air as if it were on the ground. It wasn’t an attack, but rather a movement skill. The user's speed suffered, but with enough practice, the flaw could be virtually eliminated. Another disadvantage was that it required a lot of energy to maintain, so its condition would deteriorate while in use.

The battle has entered a new phase. Mienfoo was surprisingly good in the air, so he began fighting free-form in an effort to defeat his opponent. The audience was treated to a spectacle as it demonstrated its acrobatic abilities in the air. Its freeform fighting was superior to Max's, and if his attacks connected, they would deal quite a bit of damage. Because the attacks weren’t classified as an energy type, they wouldn’t suffer a type disadvantage at all.

Despite his aerial advantage, Icarus had to work hard to avoid its attacks. He was taking up so much time that he failed to take advantage of stat increases, and they disappeared. But Lucas was unconcerned because, as long as the current situation persisted, it would benefit Icarus. He had a lot more endurance than his opponent because of his superior conditioning trait.

[Mienfoos' condition has fallen to Excellent (5/6)]

………..

[Mienfoos' condition has fallen to Depleted (2/6)]

Mienfoo's condition continued to fall because he was expending so much energy. Lucas glanced at Zero, who didn’t look bothered by the situation. It was as if the outcome of the fight was of no concern to him.

Lucas ordered another attack. He had an idea of what Zero was aiming for, even if he wasn’t sure if it was feasible. It seemed like an all-or-nothing strategy that had little chance of working, but if he managed to pull it off, it would be devastating to Icarus, so he wanted to get ahead of it.

Icarus dodged to the side as Mienfoo unleashed another kick, but instead of retreating, he rammed into Mienfoo, taking the Pokemon off guard. Icarus had always retreated before this point.

[Icarus used Double Team.]

Icarus performed the same move as before, but he did not give his opponent a chance to see the real him before unleashing a follow-up attack.

[Icarus used Air Cutter]

The blade of wind cut through the air, looking as if it were going to bisect Mienfoo in two.

[Mienfoo used Quick Guard]

A shield instantly appeared in front of Mienfoo, which blocked the attack. Mienfoo flew towards Icarus with such speed that Lucas and Icarus were taken off guard. Has it always been hiding its ability to accelerate explosively?

[Mienfoo used Reversal]

Mienfoo pulled back its arm, its fist surrounded by a glowing orb of energy, before delivering a powerful punch. The power of the move increased as the user's condition deteriorated, so it would cause significant damage in its current state, despite its type disadvantage.

But Lucas was expecting it, and Meowth had already given an order. Icarus easily dodged the attack, while Mienfoo hit nothing but empty air. When Icarus was about to retaliate, Mienfoo did something unexpected.

[Mienfoo used Baton Pass]

Mienfoo disappeared, and another Pokemon appeared exactly where he had been. Before Icarus could react, his opponent unleashed an attack.

[Emolga used Spark]

Emolga's body was enveloped in electric energy, which surged forward as a massive arc of lightning, striking Icarus squarely in the chest.

[Icarus' condition has fallen to Fair (3/6)]

[Icarus has been paralysed.]

Lucas watched helplessly as Icarus plummeted from the sky. Despite having a trait that reduced his chances of becoming paralysed, he was unlucky enough to still suffer the status effect.

Icarus struck the ground hard, twitching uncontrollably. The rest of the fight was without suspense, as Emolga used Charge first, followed by another Spark to finish off Icarus.

[Icarus has fainted.]

Lucas sighed. He hadn’t been able to respond quickly enough to Zero's tactics, despite knowing that Mienfoo had Baton Pass in his arsenal. Mienfoo was now eliminated from the fight because, according to the battle arena rules, once a Pokemon switches out, it cannot return to the battle. But Zero now had the initiative.

His eyes widened when Emolga continued to attack Icarus. It was against the rules to continue attacking a Pokemon who had fainted. Since their energy levels were depleted, they didn’t have much protection against attack, so it could be potentially fatal if the attack was powerful enough.

“Stop!” Lucas shouted.

The referee demanded the same thing, but Zero ignored it, watching as Emolga launched another attack against Icarus. The audience gasped as they witnessed the shameless attack on a fainted Pokemon.

Fortunately, the Alakazam standing outside and operating the barrier was vigilant. It formed a barrier around Icarus, preventing the attack from reaching him. It used telekinesis to restrain Emolga, who attempted to break free but was completely helpless.

The referee raised his flag. “Zero has broken the rules of the arena and so he has forfeited the match. The winner is Lucas Walker.”

He didn’t hear anything else as he rushed forward after the barrier was lowered to check on Icarus. After assuring himself that he was fine, he returned to his pokeball.

“You were amazing, buddy,” Lucas told him.

“Have you learned your lesson yet?” Zero asked, appearing in front of him.

Lucas looked up, and he was so incensed that he wanted to take that shiny bald head and smash it repeatedly into the ground. He stood up and shoved Zero backwards.

“You little bastard. Do you think that would scare me?" Lucas asked. "I would like to know what you were even thinking. You were trying to force my hand, but now everyone has witnessed your despicable actions. I doubt the church would approve of your actions.”

Zero gave no response to his words and bowed his head. "I am looking forward to our next meeting, friend. Perhaps we can do so in a more private setting.”

Lucas watched him leave with furrowed brows. He had expected a reaction from the church after his relationship with Sabrina became public, but not this soon or from someone like this weirdo.

After waving to the audience, he stepped off the stage and returned to the entrance. He spoke with the attendant, who gave him his prize, which was a variety of battle enhancer potions that he could use in battle. It was not a bad prize, as the total cost must have been more than ten thousand pokedollars.

He left the arena, still disturbed by his encounter with Zero.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas stayed with Sabrina for his final night in Saffron City. Knowing they wouldn't see each other for a while, they spent another sleepless night together, exploring each other intimately. They were finding it difficult to keep their hands to themselves now that they had entered a new stage of their relationship.

The next morning, she walked outside with him to say her last goodbyes. Brock was already waiting in the carriage he had hired to transport them to the tower. Salem appeared in front of him before Lucas could climb onto the carriage.

“What’s he doing here?” Lucas asked.

“Salem is going to accompany you,” Sabrina told him.

“You have nothing to be concerned about. Salem doesn’t need to keep following me around."

Sabrina shook her head. “It’s not my decision. Bree decided on her own. Although I must admit that I am relieved, she will keep an eye on you to ensure your safety. Don’t forget the encounter with Zero.”

"Well, okay." Lucas kissed her one last time before entering the carriage. "It will only be for a few weeks before we see each other again. I will call you frequently, but if you ever get the urge to see me, you're only a short teleport away.”

"The same goes for you," Sabrina said. Her expression showed her reluctance to let him go. "Take care of yourself."

Lucas waved as the carriage drove down the street.

“Is it hard to separate from her?” Brock asked.

“Dat it is,” Meowth sighed. “She sure was generous with her salmon.”

“He wasn’t talking to you,” Lucas said, poking Meowth in the stomach. "She didn’t give you anything. You helped yourself to her food without her permission.”

"Don't get too caught up in the details," Meowth replied, waving his paw dismissively.

"It’s hard," Lucas said in response to Brock's question. "But I will be busy for the next few weeks, so time will pass quickly."

The carriage pulled up to the teleportation tower. It was a tall, narrow structure topped with a special antenna that emitted a specific frequency to help Pokemon navigate their teleportation. It was heavily guarded by soldiers because it represented a potential vulnerability for any city. Although it was designed so that all incoming visitors would appear in a secure room, which meant it wouldn’t be easy to infiltrate a city using this method.

Lucas returned Meowth to his pokeball before they entered the building. He bought himself and Brock a ticket to Viridian City. It cost him ten thousand pokedollars, so it wasn’t the cheapest way to travel. He could have always used the service that used flying Pokemon because it was less expensive. Even though it would take longer and there was no guarantee of a safe journey. If he had his own Pokemon who could use teleport, then the tickets wouldn’t be as expensive.

They were led into one of the teleportation rooms and introduced to a Kadabra. Before the two could prepare themselves, it grabbed both of their arms and used Teleport. It caused them to experience a sensation of weightlessness before they disappeared from the room.

Lucas had a brief glimpse of an array of colours before his feet landed on the floor in a room similar to the one they had just left. A feeling of nausea had him nearly throwing up, but he managed to resist the urge.

Brock wasn’t as fortunate. He collapsed to his knees with a groan. Kadabra pushed a nearby bucket over, and Brock emptied the contents of his stomach into it.

“You have to work on your approach,” Lucas said, smirking.

"I see what you did there," Brock grumbled as he stood up. "You slipped a double entendre into your sentence, didn’t you? How I approach the ladies is impeccable."

“Right. That’s why you are always striking out.”

Brock ignored him. After passing through security, they exited the building and emerged onto the streets of Viridian City. Lucas was surprised by the rush of excitement he felt upon returning here. He preferred the city over Saffron City for some reason.

“Where should we go from here?” Brock asked.

"Let us go back to my place to unpack first.”

When they arrived at his small apartment, Brock commented on how cramped it appeared.

"There is only one room," Lucas agreed. "You can use the couch tonight, but I need to look for a bigger place. Especially with Sabrina coming to stay in a few weeks.”

“Why don’t you buy a house?” Brock suggested, “With the sales from the latest batch of potions, you should have more than enough.”

Lucas considered his suggestion. True, he had enough money to buy a house in the city. At least in middle-class neighbourhoods. After the arena earnings and the most recent potions he sold, he had a fortune of just under eight hundred thousand pokedollars. Now that he was involving the government in the mines, he wouldn’t have to spend any of it on expensive machinery. So the only significant expense would be expanding his functions.

"I do not see the point, because Viridian City will not be my permanent home," Lucas explained. "But now that I am more well-known to the public and have made enemies with the church, it might be better to rent an apartment with more security."

“That sounds like a good idea,” Brock agreed. “And I wouldn’t have to sleep on a couch.”

Lucas rolled his eyes. He was about to respond when he felt something against his chest. Looking down, he noticed that the Pokemon egg in the harness had shifted slightly. He had no idea Pokemon could do such things because they lacked physical bodies until they hatched from their eggs.

"It looks like Vulpix is about to hatch from its egg soon," Brock observed.

"That’s right," Lucas replied, smiling. "It will happen any day now."

To be more specific, Vulpix will hatch tomorrow. He had high expectations for his new companion and couldn’t wait to see what kind of personality she possessed and what her starting parameters were.

"We will leave our luggage here and go look for another place to rent," Lucas told him.

"I would like something with a large backyard," Brock suggested. "So my Pokemon can spend more time outside their pokeballs."

“If there is anything like that available.”

Lucas and Brock visited a real estate office and were presented with several options that offered excellent security for their residents. He eventually chose a middle-class neighbour which was on the verge of becoming upper-class and was part of a gated community. The rental was a two-story house with a large yard, and it would cost him ten thousand pokedollars in rent per week, but he thought the price was reasonable for what it offered. The house even had a separate, reinforced building in the back that could be used for Pokemon training.

They moved in right away, even though Lucas' previous lease was still in effect. It wasn’t that big of a loss. Brock headed out to stock up on some food supplies. As his assistant, he would be taking over the responsibilities of cooking for both them and their Pokemon, which would free Lucas up to concentrate on other matters.

Lucas spent the rest of the day training his team's stats. They still had plenty of experience to level up, but he needed to maximise their potential at each level first.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The next morning, Lucas walked into the dining room to find Brock serving breakfast to Meowth. There was already food prepared for him and his teammates. He freed them from their pokeballs, and they dug into their meals. When he sat down, Brock handed him a regional newspaper, and the front page immediately piqued his interest.

“What the hell is this?” Lucas mumbled.

"It appears you have grown popular for a different reason," Brock laughed. "You simply cannot stay out of the spotlight.

The article was titled "Genius Trainer Has Invented a New Way for Rookie Trainers to Battle," which was a mouthful. He soon realised why it was called that, as the author explained that he was a member of Lucas' fan club and lavished a little too much praise on him.

His and Meowth's antics in the battle arena appeared to have sparked a lot of interest. Because most rookie trainers lacked a strong enough bond with their Pokemon to communicate telepathically, they were at a disadvantage when issuing commands during battle. After observing how Lucas used Meowth to issue orders during the battle, they discovered a way to keep the opposing trainer from hearing their commands.

He thought that anyone could use the method. To be effective, however, they required an intelligent Pokemon capable of remembering several commands and responding calmly and decisively in battle.

"What a load of drivel," Lucas exclaimed, throwing the newspaper on the table. He became engrossed in his food and stopped thinking about it anymore.

"Look how popular I am," Meowth said as he picked up the discarded paper and started reading. "What a steaming pile of garbage. The article focuses too much on you and doesn’t give me the credit I deserve."

"Could I get you a handkerchief to cry into?" Lucas inquired, and Meowth responded with a rude gesture.

“What are you doing today?” Brock asked.

“I have to take care of some business with the mayor,” Lucas said. “But I will show you how to start making a healing salve to get you started.”

He had already taught Brock the fundamentals of alchemy while the teenager was assisting with the growth potion, but he had yet to make his own potions.

“You don’t have anything else for me to do?”

"Not at the moment," Lucas replied. "You can sell any salves you make as long as you supply the ingredients. I recommend that you travel south out of the city to gather some free ingredients. They regrow so quickly that they never seem to run out.”

Brock nodded enthusiastically. “I can do that.”

After breakfast, Lucas left the house and took his bike from his inventory so he could ride to the mayor's office. He kept the Vulpix egg on him because she could hatch at any time. There was a lot more movement from the egg, suggesting that she was eager to emerge and greet the world.

He arrived at the administrative building that housed the local government and entered the reception area. When he approached the front desk, the woman seated there looked up.

“Welcome. May I assist you?”

"I need to see the mayor," Lucas informed her.

“Do you have an appointment?”

"No, but she will want to see me once she finds out what I have discovered."

The secretary frowned. “The mayor is a busy woman. What’s so important that you think she will see you without an appointment?”

Lucas leaned against the desk. "I came across a mine that has no owner and is full of evolution stones. Based on my initial estimates, it will be extremely profitable for both me and the city."

The woman's eyes widened, and she quickly reached for her phone. After a brief conversation with someone, she hung up. “The mayor will see you immediately. Take the elevator to the top floor and her office is the second door on your right.”

When Lucas knocked on the mayor's office door, he heard a voice inside say, "Enter."

After opening the door, he entered a lavishly decorated office. The abundance of gold accents gave the office a gaudy appearance, indicating a lack of taste or someone who liked to show off their wealth. Behind the desk sat a young, blonde-haired woman with striking purple eyes and an arrogant demeanour. He was taken aback by how young she looked, as she appeared to be in her mid-twenties. Was this the mayor of Viridian City?

‘Well, don’t just stand there,” the woman said impatiently. “Sit down!”

Lucas settled into his chair. “I didn’t expect the mayor to be so young.”

"That is what happens when you have connections with powerful people," the woman said, winking. “My name is Cassidy. You seem familiar for some reason."

Lucas felt the same way. Why did her name sound so familiar? "I’m Lucas Walker. I can’t imagine that you would know anybody like me.”

Cassidy snapped her fingers. “That’s right. Your Sabrina’s boy toy. You certainly hit it big by acquiring such a beauty."

Lucas frowned. The woman didn’t sound like a mayor at all. Who the hell was influential enough to give the woman such an important position?

"Don’t look so dour," Cassidy said, thinking she may have offended him. "If I had seen you first, I would have made a move on you. You’re such a handsome guy.”

“Can we get down to business?”

"You are too impatient," Cassidy sighed. "Okay, I heard from my secretary that you have a lot of pokedollars for me.”

“For the both of us,” Lucas corrected. “It’s my understanding that I will get half of the profits from the mines.”

“After we subtract the cost of mining the stones. Have you told anyone else about it?”

Why was she asking that question? It sounded slightly threatening. "Sabrina and her uncle, the Prime Minister."

Cassidy nodded. She opened a drawer on her desk and took out a stack of papers. "Let us sign a contract. I will need you to direct the workers to the location, but it will take some time to organise the manpower and equipment. Give me your number so I can contact you when I’m ready."

They spent the next thirty minutes going over the details before Lucas got up and left her office, feeling relieved to finally be out of her sight. The woman was too much for him.

Cassidy watched him leave. This was the man who had piqued the boss' interest. Giovanni had a keen sense of people, so Cassidy was certain Lucas had his own secrets. What were the chances that he would find an undiscovered mine? She would need to keep a closer eye on him in the future.

She was tempted to conceal the fact that Lucas discovered the mines from her boss so that she could have some fun with him. But then reason prevailed, and she reached for her phone.

Giovanni answered the call. “What is it?”

“It’s about Lucas Walker,” Cassidy said. "He just walked into my office and told me he had discovered a new mine. What am I supposed to do? Should I use some underhanded tactics and take it from him?"

There was a moment of silence. “No. My interest in him outweighs the profit I could make from his share of the mine. Especially now that he is dating Sabrina Kuroi. We might be able to use that at some point.

"I understand," Cassidy said. "Have you discovered any leads regarding Mr. Ketchum's research?"

“No. Delia doesn’t know anything about her husband's work.”

"I could go to her house and persuade her," Cassidy suggested.

“That’s not necessary. Stay away from the Ketchums.”

Giovanni hung up and she put down the phone. Could she sense a hint of weakness when it came to Mrs Ketchum and her brat?

Turning in her chair, she looked out the window at the sky, sensing that things were about to get interesting. The dilemma she faced was whether to obey her boss's orders or seize this opportunity to break free from his control. Lucas may just be the key to this, as she was aware that the next few months would be turbulent.

Lucas was at home, training his Pokemon, when Vulpix decided to make her appearance. When he heard a noise, he looked down and noticed a crack in the egg. He immediately called Brock to hurry and grab a camera so they could document the event. His Pokemon surrounded him, eager to welcome their new team member into the world.

Once enough cracks appeared, the egg burst open, blinding them with a bright light. When the light faded, they were met with the sight of a small fox-like Pokemon. Unlike later on, she only had one tail at the moment, but she was absolutely adorable.

“Vulpix?” She tilted her head at him, intrigued, before sprinting forward and leaping into his arms.

She felt extremely warm and cuddly, and she buried her head in the crook of his neck. He stroked her back and released a pleased yip.

"What are you going to call her?" Brock asked.

“Vulpix is a female, so I will call her Ashe,” Lucas replied. It was a name he had decided upon weeks ago.

He used Insight on her to check out her parameters.

Her parameters were impressive, comparable to Saphira's. Thanks to the bonuses he obtained from raising her from an egg, she was starting strong, and would only grow stronger over time.

“How did you know she was a female?”

Lucas froze at his question. “Just a lucky guess. Ashe didn’t contradict me, so it must be tight.”

“What an idiot,” Meowth muttered.

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Icarus and Icaria produce their first egg, and Lucas heads back to Pallet Town.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers. Glad you are enjoying it.

GamerFiction

I love this story and camt wait for more keep up the amazing work.

Shawn Hafford

The barrier was still in effect due to Mienfoo's attack. It was deliberate on Zero's part, but I didn't elaborate on it in the chapter.

GamerFiction

Yeah sorta but I kind of lost interest. I just kind of thought he might be a name character from the anime and couldn't find anything.

Anthony Maxwell

Did you not read the last chapter? I introduced him then.

GamerFiction

Also why didn't he just return Icarus during the battle??? As the pokeballs have quite some range for the return function.

Anthony Maxwell

Zero who????
