Pokemon Resurgence: Chapter 13

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. Delia hears a scream in the front yard, and Lucas explores the cave, searching for the elusive Dratini.

Chapter 13

Delia's head snapped up when a man's scream came from outside. Rising to her feet, she saw Mimey who had been dusting, peer out through the curtains to see what the commotion was about. Mimey turned around and clenched one of her fists, signalling that there was danger outside.

“What's going on, Mum?” Ash made to rise to his feet. He and Misty were sitting on the sofa, watching the television. The girl was about to follow Ash as well.

"Stay here," Delia ordered. Surprised by her serious tone, they followed her order without question.

“Watch over the kids, Mimey,” Delia said before she peered out the window.

Her eyes were drawn to a horrifying scene. From her vantage point, she observed a distressing scene unfolding on the front lawn—a man under attack by a Banette. Was that Salem? It was the only Bannette she had encountered recently, or at all as far as she could remember.

Salem's hands were dripping with blood, capturing her attention. From her current angle, she couldn't fully assess the man's condition, but his continuous screams were audible to her. Another woman was face down on the lawn a few feet away, either unconscious or worse.

She jerked her head back, letting the curtains fall closed. She was overwhelmed by indecision about what to do next, and the man's blood-curdling screams only added to her distress. If it was indeed Salem, she would not be able to stop him, considering that he was significantly stronger than her Pokemon. Having only met him once, she never expected that he would be capable of such violence, despite the sinister vibe he gave off. What was he doing here?

The man’s screams abruptly halted, which strengthened her resolve. Even knowing that it was futile, she couldn’t stand there and do nothing. She raced into the hallway and to the front door. Taking a shrunken Pokeball from her pocket, she opened the door quickly and took a peek outside.

Salem raised his head when the door opened and his red eyes locked onto hers.

“Salem?” Delia asked. “I think you have done enough. You need  to leave!”

Although she tried to project confidence, her voice trembled. Delia clutched the Pokeball tightly, prepared to summon Chase if the need arose. After a brief hesitation, Salem turned around and flew away, before vanishing from sight. Uncertain if he had actually left, she hesitated briefly before cautiously stepping out of the house.

The man’s front was covered in blood, and his eyes stared up at the sky with glassy eyes. Delia felt squeamish, and when she caught sight of something that looked like entrails sticking out of his stomach, she no longer could resist the urge. She released the contents of her stomach onto the front porch.

"What is happening... Oh, Arceus!" A man appeared from the street and screamed when he noticed the carnage in the front yard.

Delia stood up, taking a few unsteady steps down the stairs until she reached the woman lying motionless on the grass. She deliberately avoided looking at the man, as it was clear that he was beyond help. Crouching down, she checked for the woman's pulse by feeling her neck, and a sigh of relief escaped her lips when she detected a steady beat.

The middle-aged gentleman approached her. "Is she okay?"

“She appears to be fine,” Delia said. “Do you have a cellphone on you? We need to call the ambulance and the authorities.”

The man nodded and took out a phone from his pocket. “Did you see who did this?”

“It was a Pokemon,” Delia replied heavily. “A Banette.”

The man paused and looked around nervously. “A ghost-type Pokemon? It could still be around here.”

Delia didn’t think Salem would return but she summoned Chase to put the man at ease. Chase stood guard while he made the calls.

“Better call the Pokemon Rangers as well if there is a rogue Pokemon on the loose,” the man muttered.

Two hours later, Delia opened the door for Officer Jenny. The authorities and the ambulance arrived quickly after her neighbour had made the call. Their carriages were pulled by Rapidash, enabling them to respond swiftly to emergencies. The man was beyond saving, and the woman had only been knocked unconscious and would not experience any lasting effects.

“Mrs Ketchum, I need to ask you a few more questions,” Officer Jenny said.

“Can we speak outside?” Delia asked. “I have children in the house.”

“Of course.”

Delia followed her outside and took a seat on the porch bench. "How long will the yard be filled with law enforcement personnel?"

“It is now a crime scene.” Officer Jenny answered. "They need to conduct a thorough investigation, so it might take some time. Earlier, you mentioned that you don't own this house, is that correct?"

"It belongs to Professor Oak of Pallet Town," Delia confirmed. "I work for him, and he loaned it to me so I could take a vacation."

“Is it only you and your kids in the house?”

“No.” Delia began by explaining about Misty first, before moving on to tell her about Lucas.

“Lucas is another employee of Professor Oak’s? Where is he at the moment?”

“He is outside the city doing a job for Professor Oak.”

“When will he return?”

“Sometime in the afternoon, I imagine.”

Over the next several minutes, Officer Jenny continued to ask a myriad of questions, and Delia sensed that she was gradually building towards a specific point.

Officer Jenny closed her notepad with a snap and regarded Delia with a serious expression. "Mrs Ketchum, are you aware of the identities of the individuals who were assaulted here today?"

“No, I have never seen them before in my life,” Delias said. “What’s this about?”

“The man went by the name of James Turner, while the woman is known as Jessie Maple. They are both small-time criminals affiliated with Team Rocket.

“Oh my!” Delia held a hand to her cheek. “Do you think they were here for a particular reason? Were they going to rob Professor Oak’s house?”

"I'm afraid it is even more sinister," Officer Jenny said, consulting her notepad again. "We discovered a bag next to James' body, containing several items specifically intended for torture and..."

“What?” Delia asked after Officer Jenny paused.

“Sexual gratification,” Officer Jenny finished, and Delia felt a chill run down her spine.

Delia rubbed her arms, grappling with the realisation that she had narrowly escaped a terrible fate. Her thoughts turned to Ash and Misty—would they also have fallen victim to the Team Rocket's members' depravity? At first, she had been repulsed by Salem's actions, but now she couldn't deny that he had potentially saved her and the kid's lives. Should she still be concerned about the man's death, considering the plans he had for her?

"There were traces in the bag that implicated them in a number of unsolved crimes," Jenny explained. "These include cases of torture, rape, arson, and murder. It remains unclear whether these individuals responsible were acting on behalf of Team Rocket or pursuing their own depraved agenda."

“Do you think I was targeted for a specific reason?” Delia asked.

"Yes, we believe it may have something to do with Professor Oak. Was there anything that led to suggest Professor Oak was worried about something? Perhaps something he said or any unusual behaviour?"

Delia paused, as she was now confronted about whether she should share the information that Professor Oak had told her. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with sharing with the officer what she knew, as it was likely to come out when Oak had dealt with the issues in Pallet Town.

“Actually, there is a bigger reason as to why I came here for a holiday…” Delia started.

Officer Jenny took notes while Delia recounted her story. The officer seemed uneasy about the direction her case was headed, but she persisted in asking relevant questions until she had learned every detail. Delia chose to keep Salem's identity a secret and claimed ignorance when Officer Jenny asked about it. Despite the Pokemon's dangerous nature, she didn't want him to face any consequences, and it wasn't widely known that he belonged to Sabrina.

"Thank you for sharing this information with me," Officer Jenny said. "I will need to proceed cautiously from this point onwards. It might be best if I leave Professor Oak and Miss Sabrina to handle the situation in Pallet Town. In the meantime, you will be placed under police protection until this whole situation is resolved. This includes Mister Walker too."

"Thank you," Delia said with a sigh of relief.

All she desired was for this terrible ordeal to come to an end so that she and Ash could resume their ordinary lives.

A couple of hours earlier.

Lucas continued into the cave until he turned a bend, and he could no longer see the opening. He shone the torch over the walls and the ceilings of the limestone cave, looking carefully for any hidden Pokemon. In such a confined and dark space, it would be easy for him to be ambushed before his Pokemon could react.

“Icarus, your wings are clipped in here, unless the cave opens up further on,” Lucas said. “Remain on my shoulder and keep a lookout for trouble.”

“Pidgey!” Icarus pecked at his hair.

“Max, you're the vanguard.”

“Kid?” Max tilted his head in confusion.

“It means you take the lead,” Lucas explained.

“Kid!”

As they proceeded through the tunnel, Lucas frequently had to stoop to avoid hitting his head on the low ceiling. A film of water covered the ground, left behind by the previous tide, causing his feet to make a lot of noise in the otherwise quiet surroundings.

Shortly after, they came across their first wild Pokemon. Lucas heard it first before actually laying his eyes on it. There. Startled by a loud chirping sound, Lucas hastily raised his torch to cast light on the ceiling. There, he spotted a Zubat hanging above him, its fangs shimmering brightly in the torch's beam.

>Species: Zubat

Level: 17

Condition: Perfect

Threat Level: Intermediate<

“Thundershock,” Lucas commanded.

Max released an arc of lightning just as the Zubat launched itself from the ceiling, narrowly escaping the attack. Instead of confronting Max, the Zubat flew off deeper into the cave.

“That can’t be good,” Lucas muttered. “If he has friends, then he may warn them. Stay alert!”

He gazed at the arrow in front of him,  which pointed him in the direction of the elusive Dratini. Below it, a small text read: 223 meters. That was the distance remaining before he reached the Pokemon.

He pressed on until he reached an intersection. Ahead of him, the path continued while another path branched off to the right. The arrow pointed straight ahead, indicating that Dratini was in that direction. However, he knew better than to rely solely on that information. The cave system could be convoluted, with twisting paths that could lead anywhere.

Lucas stood there for a moment, before turning to his right and heading down that path. There was still plenty of time left before high-tide, so he may as well explore the cave thoroughly. As he took more than a dozen steps, he suddenly heard the unmistakable sound of fluttering wings behind him. He reacted quickly, spinning around to discover the source of the sound. He soon realised that the noise was caused by a group of Zubats flying through the tunnel he had just turned off.

Did the Zubat actually summon reinforcements? Then it was fortuitous that he had made the decision to turn right. He kept still for the moment, not daring to make a movement that would catch their attention. Although Zubat had no eyes, it could use ultrasonic waves to detect movements..

“Kid!” Max called softly, giving Lucas a thumbs up to indicate that it was safe to move.

“Let’s keep moving,” Lucas said.

After another minute of following the tunnel, he arrived at a dead end. The tunnel expanded into a small circular cavern, featuring a pool of water in the center. The water had accumulated there because of a hole in the ground, though its depth remained unknown to him. Hanging from the ceilings and walls was a peculiar moss, emitting an iridescent blue glow that gave the surroundings a peculiar radiance..

“What is this moss?” Lucas took out a knife and cut some down. He ran his hands through the slimy texture, which felt similar to seaweed. "I might as well harvest it since it could be valuable. However, I should leave some behind."

“KId!” Max called out in alarm.

Lucas heard a splash from behind him. Icarus launched himself off his shoulder, and Lucas ducked down right before a jet of water hit the wall, right where he had been standing.

Rolling over, he searched for the culprit responsible for attacking him. A Pokemon was partially submerged in the water, who was now engaged in fighting Max.

>Species: Tentacool

Level: 19

Condition: Perfect

Threat Level: Intermediate<

Lucas got to his feet and quickly retreated from the pool of water. He used Insight on the Pokemon and discovered that its special ability was Liquid Ooze. It wasn’t something he needed to worry about, as Max didn’t have any moves that could drain his opponent's condition.

Max unleashed a Thundershock at the Tentacool, which promptly responded by releasing a spray of purple acid. The two attacks clashed in mid-air, producing a distinct sizzling sound. A haze momentarily enveloped the space above the water, obscuring the Tentacool from view.

“Stay alert!” Lucas shouted at Max. Icarus flew down and landed on Lucas’ shoulder, protecting his trainer while Max fought the Tentacool.

“Use Thundershock on the water!” Lucas called.

Max followed his command and released an arc of yellow lightning that struck the water. In that exact moment, Tentacool leapt out of the water to evade being electrocuted. Rather than flopping on the ground, it effortlessly levitated a few feet in the air. Now, it was only about a dozen away from Max's current position.

The sea Pokemon knows how to move on land! But it shouldn’t be faster than Max as it couldn’t move as swiftly out of the water.

“Max, use Quick Attack!” Lucas ordered.

Max dashed forward, but the distance he had to cover allowed Tentacool to release another attack. Tentacool released a series of golden rings from its body, which swiftly zoomed forward to meet Max.

Max leapt over the rings and then fell down on his opponent with his hands raised over his head. Using a bit of creativity, he delivered a hammer blow down onto the Tentacool’s body. His opponent staggered backwards, before collapsing to the ground, its body pulsating with an electric current. It had been paralysed by Max’s special ability, Static.

“Max, it’s defence is weak,” Lucas called. “Unleash physical attacks on it.”

Despite Tentacool's weakness to electricity, its special defence was incredibly strong. It would be better for Max to employ physical attacks to deal damage and get another opportunity to paralyze Tentacool.

Max lay into the Pokemon with a series of punches onto its blue shell, while the Pokemon lay helpless. Its condition changed from Perfect to Excellent to Healthy, before it recovered from its paralysis. Max leapt back as it raised its tentacles and lashed out at him before it raised itself to its feet.

“Quick Attack!” Lucas called.

Max dashed forward and rammed into Tentacool, which raised its tentacles to try and absorb some of the damage. It was flung back again, and Lucas clenched his fist in happiness when he noticed it had been paralysed. However, that feeling was short-lived when Max cried out, holding one of his arms. The text above his head had changed to reflect that he had been poisoned.

“Sneaky bastard got a cheap shot in,” Lucas growled. “Max, you need to finish the fight quickly.”

“Kid!” Max dashed forward and executed another Quick Attack on the downed Tentacool. Its condition had fallen further, so it was only a matter of time.

Instead of wailing into the Tentacool again, Max picked him up, despite the wound on his arm. He brought the Pokemon slamming down on top of a rock next to him. He repeated it again and again until its condition had fallen to Critical.

Tentacool recovered from paralysis, but it didn’t try to attack Max. Instead, it used its tentacles to try and drag itself towards the water.

“Maybe I should let it go?” Lucas mused, feeling sorry for the Pokemon.

Max wasn’t having any of it and launched a Thundershock at the Tentacool. It collapsed to the ground in a dead faint.

“Kid!” Max raised his arms, before wincing as the wound on his arm flared up.

“Hold on, Max,” Lucas ran over to him and retrieved an Antidote from his inventory.

Max's condition had worsened due to his poisoned status, and if he didn't treat it, it would continue to deteriorate. While certain status conditions may naturally heal over time, poison requires treatment, especially when an open wound allows it to enter the bloodstream.

Lucas sprayed the Antidote on Max’s wound, who sighed in relief when the pain lessened. Right before Lucas’ eyes, the remaining poison dripped out of Max’s wound, leaving it clean. Lucas rubbed something healing salve on it, and the wound disappeared as if it had never been there.

“Throw Tentacool back into the water,” Lucas said.

Max complied, although he wasn’t gentle about it. Lucas shook his head, before turning his attention back to the moss. “Keep an eye out while I harvest the moss.”

In a span of twenty minutes, Lucas hurriedly gathered as much moss as possible, carefully leaving behind enough to allow for it to regrow. At times, he would trim down some moss, only to discover that more had already sprouted in the same spot. Initially confused, he soon came to realise that his Green Thumb skill was at work, granting him an additional yield.

After he placed the moss back in his inventory, Lucas and his companions returned to the intersection and took the path heading straight this time. He kept a close eye out for the Zubat, but it appeared as if they hadn’t returned yet.

He continued down the tunnel and explored several more branching tunnels. While he didn’t find anything noteworthy in the first few tunnels, he did encounter more wild Pokemon. They were manageable, however, and Max took care of them easily enough. As he ventured into the next branching tunnel, his Itemfinder suddenly beeped, prompting him to retrieve his small shovel. At the end of the corridor, there was a raised bit of ground, where some mushrooms were growing.

He dug up the earth and found another wooden box. When he opened it, he discovered a piece of candy neatly wrapped. Its appearance filled him with excitement, as his mind immediately thought of Rare Candy. He didn’t think an ordinary piece of candy would be used as treasure.

“Kid!” Max held out a hand for the candy, his eyes shining with greed.

“Should I try it out on one of my Pokemon?” Lucas mused. Did it work like the game, which increased a Pokemon’s level by one? Should he really waste it at this point in time, if that was the case? On the other hand, surely he would find more of them, right? Maybe he would use one up just to test its effects.

“Pidgey,” Icarus reached down from his perch and tried to grab the candy with his beak. Lucas closed his fist before Icarus managed to snatch it.

"What's going on with the two of you? Your reactions make it seem like you're addicted to it. Just to clarify, it's not cocaine, okay?"

They stared at the candy, completely ignoring him. “How about we use rock, paper, scissors to decide who gets it? I will have to do it for Icarus, though.”

“Kid?”

“I will show you how to play,” Lucas said. He showed Max the three hand signs, and his companion quickly caught on to the game.

“Are you ready?” Lucas asked, and Max nodded. “Rock, paper, scissors!”

Lucas had chosen rock and Max had chosen paper. Max exclaimed in disgust, staring at his hand as if it had betrayed him.

“Pidgey!” Icarus clacked his beak at Max, mocking him.

Lucas gave the candy to Icarus and checked his menu to see the outcome. To his astonishment, instead of a simple level-up for Pidgey, it received ten thousand experience points. Lucas was disappointed by the result. While the amount was sufficient to level up Icarus at his current level, it wouldn't hold true once the Pokémon was above level twenty. The only positive was that he didn’t have to worry about wasting the candy, as experience points were a lot more flexible.

“Still an amazing item,” Lucas murmured. He spent Icarus’ experience points immediately and increased his level to sixteen.

“Kid!” Max huffed, looking extremely disappointed.

“You will get the next one,” Lucas promised, patting Max’s head. He was then struck by a thought. Could he consume the candy as well, and earn experience points? It was a nice thought, but the way the System worked meant that he earned more experience points than his Pokemon overall.

Before he left, he harvested the mushrooms. It was another ingredient that he didn’t recognise, so he used his gloves. Lucas reminded himself to look for a book on plants native to the area when he returned to the city.

He returned to the main tunnel and continued moving forward. The arrow indicated that Dratini's location was only thirty metres ahead of him. Because he didn’t know what else was waiting for him, he made sure his Pokemon’s condition was perfect before he continued. However, he was confronted with a dead end a few moments later. The arrow pointed right into a solid rock wall.

“What am I supposed to do now?” Lucas kicked the wall in frustration. “Ouch!”

He bent down to examine his injured ankle, which he had hurt due to his own foolishness. As he did so, he felt a gentle breeze on his hands coming from the side. Curiosity piqued, he directed the light towards it and discovered a small, narrow crawl space below. It seemed spacious enough for him to traverse. Could this be the path that would lead him to the Dratini?

"Hey, kid!" Max said, gesturing towards the hole and then pointing at himself.

“If you want to go first, I am not going to argue,” Lucas said. “I’ll be right behind you.”

Lucas and Icarus followed Max as he led the way into the crawl space. A grimace crossed his face as the water on the ground seeped into his clothes, leaving them thoroughly soaked. Thankfully, the crawl space turned out to be relatively short, spanning only about ten feet, before leading them into a new tunnel that ran parallel to the previous one. He turned to look down the tunnel. Was there another entrance to the caves close to the one he entered?

He turned back and walked in the other direction towards Dratini’s location. A familiar blue glow shimmered on the walls. As he continued along the tunnel, it gradually curved to the right. Soon, he reached a point where the tunnel opened up into a spacious cavern just ahead of him.

Lucas approached the cavern entrance, switching off his torch and taking careful steps to minimise noise. The sight that greeted him was nothing short of breathtaking. It bore a resemblance to the first cavern he had explored, albeit on a grander scale. Instead of just a pool of water, there lay before him what could only be described as a large pond. Nestled at its heart was a tiny island, adorned with lush green foliage and vibrant orange flowers. On the outskirts of the cavern surrounding the pool, there were multiple raised rock shelves, and an abundance of moss hanging from the walls and ceilings.

Upon calculating the remaining distance to Dratini's position, he concluded that it must be located on the island. The only obstacle facing him was how he was going to reach the island. The water was murky, making it impossible to see anything beyond a few feet below the surface. He was unwilling to take the chance that he wouldn’t encounter a Pokemon lurking in its depths.

“Pidgey!” Icarus raised a wing and pointed off to the right.

Lucas discovered a Pokemon resting on one of the rock shelves, right where Icasrus was pointing.

>Species: Quagsire

Level: 28

Condition: Perfect

Threat Level: Intermediate<

“Dammit,” Lucas cursed. If he took a step further into the cavern, he had no doubt the Pokemon would see him. There was a chance it could already see him. Furthermore, the cavern was large enough that there could be more Pokemon that he couldn’t see.

“Pidgey!” Icarus launched himself off Lucas’ shoulder and flew towards the island.

“Icarus!” Lucas hissed, but it was too low for the Pokemon to hear him.

Icarus landed on the island and clacked his beak at something hidden from Lucas’ view. A moment later, a head poked up and stared at Icarus with curiosity. The two Pokemon seemed to be speaking to each other, and Icarus waved its wings as if emphasising its point. Dratini rose higher from its position in the foliage, giving Lucas a better look at her.

“Beautiful,” Lucas breathed.

Dratini possessed a sleek, serpentine body of vibrant blue, highlighted by a pristine white underside. Despite its slender physique, it measured nearly two meters in length. However, the most captivating aspect of Dratini was its soulful purple eyes that seemed to peer deep into one's very being.

His thoughts were interrupted when Icarus chirped, rising into the air and flying back towards him. The Dratini followed him, slipping into the water and swimming along the surface of the pond. In order to have privacy with the Dratini away from the other Pokemon in the cavern, Lucas swiftly retreated back into the tunnel. This was his best chance!

Icarus came first, and he landed on the ground next to Max. A moment later, Dratini appeared in the tunnel and glanced at Lucas with caution. As soon as she was within range, Lucas immediately scanned the Pokemon with Insight and got a look at its parameters.

“Amazing,” Lucas whispered.

The species certainly lived up to its name, as Dratini had amazing hidden stats. He wondered whether this was typical of the species or if he simply lucked out with the Pokémon Search ability and caught a Pokémon with exceptional potential on his first try.

Her normal stats were certainly nothing to scoff at either, although he thought they would be slightly higher considering her aptitude. On the other hand, this could be due to the fact that she is a wild Pokemon and has not yet fully unlocked her potential.

Moreover, the Pokemon had a diverse set of moves and affinities that saved him a lot of time and effort in improving. Undoubtedly, the primary motivation behind his desire for this particular Pokemon was its final evolution, Dragonite.

Something in her parameters caught his attention. Judging by their appearance, her favourite food seemed to be very similar to the mushrooms he had recently picked. Could it be the reason why the Dratini had chosen this place as its home? Perhaps he could use it to assist in catching the Dratini?

Lucas retrieved a mushroom from his inventory and held it out to the Dratini to tempt her.

“Hey, beautiful,” Lucas said. “Do you want this mushroom?”

He knew he was taking an enormous risk, but he was feeling greedy. He assumed that Dratini, being more intelligent, wouldn't immediately attack him like other wild Pokemon. It was a huge assumption to make, and it may end up being a huge mistake. But If he managed to lay his hands on Dratini and activate his Pokemon Friendship skill, then his chances of capturing her would increase. It was effective below level twenty, and she was only level seventeen.

Max stood close to him, watching Dratini closely as it slid along the ground towards them. Lucas held his breath as it came within touching distance. As soon as he felt its tongue brush his hand, he activated Pokemon Friendship. Dratini skillfully slurped up the mushroom, swallowing it whole, and regarded Lucas with curiosity.

“Would you like to become my Pokemon?” Lucas asked.

Dratini tilted her head, staring at him for a moment. “Tini!’

Pidgey turned to Lucas and tried to translate for him. He pointed at Dratini, then himself, before clacking its beak.

“She wants a Pokemon battle?” Lucas asked. “That sounds reasonable. Why don't we get—”

Lucas paused as a sound caught his attention. He turned in the opposite direction, where the tunnel stretched into the darkness. The sound almost sounded like rushing water.

“Tini,” Dratini called out in alarm. She turned around and headed back for the cavern. His Pokemon raised the alarm a moment later.

“Run!” Lucas screamed as the sound of the rushing water got louder. How could the tide be coming in now? There were still a few hours left!

Icarus flew ahead while Lucas and Max chased after him, their feet pounding against the ground. Upon reaching the cavern, Lucas wasted no time and began scaling the closest rocky ledge, not caring if there were other Pokemon nearby. Max was right next to him, effortlessly making his climbing skills seem inadequate in comparison. With each step, they climbed higher and higher, trying to get to the highest point in the cavern.

A powerful surge of water surged into the cavern, an unending torrent that posed a grave risk of submerging the entire space. Lucas watched in astonishment as a massive Pokemon swept into the cave on a powerful wave. At that moment, he realised he was in deep trouble.

So, what do you think? What is the Pokemon that has arrived? Will Lucas and the gang be able to escape alive?

Thanks for reading.
