Harry Potter: The Mage's Path Chapter 34

Hi all,

Here's the next chapter. I have added Celeste's parameters to the Status post, and Hedwig will be updated sometime this week.

Celeste and Hedwig sat on the bed so if they were affected by the elixir and fell, they would have a soft landing. He transfigured a small cup for Celeste and filled it to the brim with the liquid. It was difficult to judge how much he should give each of them. If it's too little, it won't have any effect which would be a waste of a precious resource. Too much, and it may cause them harm.

What was the determining factor? Was it as simple as their body mass or was there another element he missed, like their age? Harry was hesitant to give it to them, but they had no concerns. After telling the two about its effects, they were immediately interested in trying the elixir.

"Hurry up and give it to me already," Celeste demanded.

Harry handed over the cup and the fairy drank the elixir without hesitation. It took a moment for its effects to kick in, and then the fairy's face reddened and she staggered as if she was drunk.

"Woah," Celeste fell onto her butt and giggled. "Give me some more. It's tasty."

Harry relaxed, as the fairy didn't seem adversely affected by the elixir. "Get real. This is all I have and I am not wasting it satisfying your taste buds. I don't know how to get more, other than asking Victor, which will never happen."

'How long is it supposed to take?' Hedwig asked.

Harry shrugged. "No idea. It didn't take long for me, but Celeste could be different."

Celeste closed her eyes, lying prone on the bed as the elixir worked its magic. A few minutes later, she opened her eyes and smirked. "Oh yeah, this feels great."

Harry received a notification, so he opened it to see what Celeste had obtained.

=====

Celeste has unlocked a new skill thanks to the Sacred Nascent Elixir.

Amplification | Active | Cost: Variable |

Description: It allows Celeste to overpower a spell by holding onto it instead of releasing it immediately, but it costs extra MP. The maximum damage cannot exceed three times the spell's base damage. However, other effects may stack with this perk, such as equipment or food bonuses. Cannot be used while using the Shadow Cloak ability.

=====

It would allow her to overcome stronger enemies as long as she was given the time to cast the spells. It didn't say if they applied just to her own spells, or if it included ones she got from accessories like the Light-Spelled Foci Ring. He assumed that they would be applicable, as there was nothing stating otherwise. There was no doubt in his mind that she would take care of the dungeon without any issues.

Harry opened the menu and accessed the Familiar tab. He wanted to look at her current parameters and see how they had changed since the update.

=====

There had been some adjustments made to Celeste's parameters, although she still retained her skills, which underwent slight modifications. He noticed that she still had the Strength attribute, although it was extremely low. It was an attribute that humans didn't have, but other magical races and creatures did.

"You still have ten AP," Harry said. "What do you want to spend it on?"

"Eh, just put five into Vitality and Magic each," Celeste replied. "If I am going to be casting a lot of spells, I am going to need more MP, and having more HP is always important."

"Got it," Harry said, spending her AP as she requested. "The new perk is amazing. But you probably won't need it in the dungeon, except for the boss. It would probably be a waste of MP, and on top of that, you cannot use Shadow Cloak at the same time."

"Right," Celeste nodded, before turning to look at Hedwig. "Alright, bird-brain, time for you to unlock some potential as well. I bet you won't get something as amazing as me."

'It doesn't matter. I still have you beat where it matters. Brains.'

"Yeah right," Celeste scoffed.

Harry measured out a portion for Hedwig as well, and she went through the same process as Celeste, albeit with more dignity. Her face showed nothing as if she were merely drinking water. What a boss.

'I don't feel any different' Hedwig observed.

"Let me see," Harry said, opening the notifications. He was pleasantly surprised by what he found.

=====

Hedwig has unlocked a new perk thanks to the Sacred Nascent Elixir.

Hidden Evolution | Active/Passive | Cost: 0 |

Description: Hedwig has the potential to evolve into something beyond the Snowy Owl. This perk automatically takes twenty-five per cent of her experience earned, until she has enough to evolve. Additionally, she may spend experience from her experience cache to quicken this process. This perk may be deactivated/activated at any time by Hedwig, by stating the command: Activate/Deactivate Evolution.

• Experience Required: [0/20000]

• Currently Active.

=====

"No way," Celeste cried. "This is such bullshit."

'Well, that explains why I didn't notice a difference.'

"I think this perk is named wrong," Celeste sniffed. "I think she will devolve into a pigeon instead."

"This is amazing," Harry grinned. "I didn't even know that it was possible for an owl to evolve. Is this because of the system? Or are there other owls out there who have achieved the same feat?"

'I should research it to see if there are any similar cases. I may be able to find what I could evolve into, and see if it is worth it. Imagine if I evolved into something without wings. It would be terrible.'

"Well, I will go with Celeste tomorrow to complete her quest," Harry said. "Once her levelling issue is solved, the two of you will be able to grind for experience, as well as work on your evolution."

"I thought you were going to work on the two classes first before returning to the dungeons," Celeste asked in confusion.

"There's nothing stopping you two from working together without me," Harry pointed out. "The Peverell Dungeon has different floors to choose from so you can grind experience relative to your own level. I will only need to take you to the dungeon. However, I am not sure if you can access the dungeon on your own."

'It should be possible. We are part of Gaia as well.' Hedwig answered.

Harry looked at Hedwig's parameters, which had similar changes just like Celeste's. Her strength was higher than before, which made sense as Hedwig was a bird of prey, and her talons could deal quite a bit of damage.

After ensuring his familiars suffered no ill effects from the elixir, Harry let them go. They flew off and landed on Hedwig's perch. Harry looked at them with suspicion, as the two conversed with each other. It was not often that the two cooperated together outside of combat. Maybe they were discussing tactics since they would grind the dungeons together. After imagining what combinations they would come up with, he shuddered in horror. Combining Hedwig's wisdom and Celeste's vindictiveness sounded like a nightmare for their opponents.

Harry opened his own menu and looked at his own progress. He had been in such a rush to level up his Job and classes that he had neglected his skills. Some of them could wait until Hogwarts started, but he still needed to work on key skills like Occulumency. There was Dagger Mastery that he hadn't touched at all since he first learned it since he had zero interest in using a weapon. It would remain there indefinitely unless he could remove it from his skill list.

Next, he checked the status of his quests. The majority of them were not urgent, as they still had months left on them to finish. Nevertheless, he shouldn't ignore quests like the one that required him to find out information about Victor. Even though he still had plenty of time to complete the quest, he should be actively working on it because the man was intimidating. If there was something that gave him an advantage over Victor, he should grab it with both hands.

In order to find more information about the man, all he could think of was to explore more dungeons and see if he had any hidden laboratories, like the two he had found in the other Instant Dungeons. That would involve locating their dungeon cores, which he was still not sure about how to do yet.

One quest that he had deliberately ignored was the one related to the castle, where he had to find a number of Hogwarts secret rooms. The reward was two levels for every room he found, for a total of fourteen levels. Although it had been tweaked after the update. The amount of experience it would normally take to level up his current Job level was added to his experience cache instead. This meant he had better control over how he distributed it among his classes. He decided that once his Job level got to level thirty-six, then he would concentrate on finishing the quest since it would take him directly to level fifty.

The 'Preparing for Hell' quest looked like something he would obtain simply by exploring the Peverell Dungeon and levelling his class. Level forty did not seem like such a difficult thing to achieve, unlike when he first received the quest a few weeks ago. In any case, he would strive to exceed that level anyway. The only questionable objective in the quest was how he would obtain the Peverell family legacy. He did not know how long it would take to complete the Peverell Dungeon.

Harry decided to work on his Occlumency for the rest of the day. He entered the Empty dungeon and sat down. He was immediately immersed in his mind, focused on building his shields. The lack of distractions inside the dungeon helped immensely with this task.

<====({owo})====>

15th August

"Remember, if you get into any trouble, I will step in to save you," Harry told Celeste as they arrived inside the Wandering Aspen Horror Dungeon.

He gave her a Cottage Pie to boost her Magic and Vitality further. It was probably unnecessary, but he was not about to take any chances. It may be required for the boss, depending on how much damage Celeste could deal to it.

"Do you want me to fail my quest?" Celeste asked incredulously after eating her meal.

"The quest doesn't say you have to complete it on your first attempt," Harry said reasonably. "Besides, I don't think you will need any help. This dungeon will be a breeze with the foci you have equipped."

"Well, let's get started," Celeste replied.

Harry covered himself with the Invisibility Cloak and followed Celeste towards her first target. They had completed this dungeon together so many times that she didn't need directions. They had a route worked out that maximised their efficiency to finish the dungeon faster while grabbing all the treasure.

As he walked, he kept an eye out for anything odd that might lead him to the dungeon core. Now that his perception was higher, there was a chance he would notice something he hadn't before. He was convinced that it had to be located somewhere in the underground lab where he first met Celeste. Even so, he wasn't completely certain, so it paid to be thorough.

Celeste encountered her first monster, the Aspen Horror Sapling. Due to her Shadow Cloak skill, the first light arrow she fired caught it completely unaware. However, the skill deactivated whenever combat was initiated, so she became visible again. It didn't really matter, as she removed half of the monster's health in one hit. The Sapling tried to retaliate, but Celeste flew up and out of the monster's range. Another arrow and she finished off the monster.

"Take that trash mob," Celeste cheered.

"Why didn't I have it this easy when I first entered the dungeon?" Harry grumbled.

"Do I need to point out the obvious?" Celeste asked with a superior expression. "Now, loot the corpse for me, minion."

"Why don't you see if you can do it yourself?" Harry said. "If you are planning to run dungeons without me, you need to obtain loot on your own."

"That's right," Celeste flew down. "It would be a tragedy to leave the loot behind."

Celeste touched the corpse, and a smile appeared on her face as it disappeared, leaving behind some money and another shadow essence. Harry picked them up and stored them in his inventory.

"You won't be able to harvest corpses, but you should still have the same benefits as me from looting, like obtaining equipment from monsters with their data completely unlocked."

"That's good," Celeste replied. "Make sure to keep track of everything I obtain. All of the loot is mine since I'm doing all of the work."

"Whatever," Harry rolled his eyes.

They continued through the dungeon without issue. Even the Sentinels were no match for her, although one of their sword beams almost caught her off guard. The way monsters worked after the update meant that even at low levels, they could be a threat depending on the specific abilities at their disposal. The Sentinels' primary attributes were Strength and Agility. With Celeste's low defence, one hit could do a lot of damage. Thankfully, she had her armour to offer some added protection.

Celeste couldn't open the treasure chest since she wasn't strong enough to lift the lid. This led her to bombard it with arrows to ease her frustration. However, the chest seemed immune to damage, as it didn't even have a scratch on its surface. Maybe if she teamed up with Hedwig, the owl could use her wind magic to open the chest. There wasn't any worthwhile treasure inside the chest, but Celeste wouldn't leave anything behind so Harry opened it for her.

They reached the underground cavern where the Treant was located. Celeste meditated to recover her MP and they briefly discussed the battle tactics, but it was pretty straightforward. Stay mobile to avoid the Treant's attack while firing spells from long range. However, there were contingency plans for when things didn't go as planned. It would be a battle of attrition since the Treant had more HP and Defence than the common monsters. As long as she played it safe, there shouldn't be too much trouble.

Up until now, she had only used the Light Arrow spell. It only did a moderate amount of damage, but it was fast, so she could spam a lot of them in a short amount of time. As a precaution, she would use the Luster Shield to offer some further protection. The Light Grenade spell was an AOE, and it had a small chance of blinding the opponent. It wasn't that much stronger than the Light Arrow, however, so she probably wouldn't use it against the boss.

Harry positioned himself just inside the corridor leading to the cavern and watched Celeste fly forward to engage the Treant. While he had prepared her as much as he could, he still felt some anxiety about her potentially getting hurt. As soon as she was in danger, he would warp forward and kill the Treant without hesitation. They could always run the dungeon again if they needed to.

Celeste flew above the Treants' head and activated the Luster Shield, followed by a Light Arrow. It flew downwards and impacted the Treants' head, rousing it from its passive state. The monster released a tremendous roar. One of its long trunk-sized arms swept upwards to knock Celeste out of the air. She dodged to the side, barely avoiding it, but the wind it generated in its wake sent her tumbling away.

Since the cavern had a low ceiling, she couldn't fly up to avoid attacks, as the Treant's reach was too long. This meant she couldn't fly up and out of range. It's not like she could go too far anyway since the Light Arrow spell had an effective range of ten metres. It meant she would have to take some risks if she wanted to damage the Treant.

Celeste fired another arrow at the Treant, but it blocked it with its other arm, mitigating most of the damage. She spammed a few more as she flew around the monster, and managed to score a few hits before she had to dodge to the side again. The Treant was now using both of its arms to attack, and she found it harder to avoid.

Unfortunately, it only got worse from there as the Treant utilised the roots covering the ground to attack her in tandem with its arms. One of them hit her, and she flew towards the ground.

Fortunately, the shield mitigated most of the damage, but Harry still bit his lip anxiously. Maybe he should have looked more closely at the Treant's parameters before Celeste engaged it. So far, it seems to be fighting similarly to when he fought it, but it might also be hiding some nasty surprises.

Celeste recovered and avoided the next attack. Celeste flew around to the back of the Treant and aimed at its weak spot. With her behind it, she didn't have to worry about its arms anymore. The Treant kept turning to face the fairy, but she flew around to stay behind it while firing arrows at its back. She was making some progress now, as its HP was down to seventy-five per cent.

Harry wanted to shout advice at her, but he didn't know if that would be considered as contributing to the fight. He had given her advice beforehand, so he would just have to trust her to handle it.

The battle continued until the Treant's HP was below twenty per cent, at which point the fight got more frantic. The entire floor seemed to come alive, as the roots surrounding the Treant became so dense that it was almost impossible to see Celeste. Her tactic in this situation would be to get closer to the Treant and limit the number of roots attacking her. This ensured that she wouldn't miss with her arrows as well, as she didn't have unlimited MP. The spells attached to the foci cost more to cast than if she had them naturally.

Two minutes later, the Treant stopped, and hundreds of roots fell to the ground with a series of thumping sounds. Celeste emerged from behind the monster with a whoop, excited about her victory. Harry ran over to congratulate her and noticed she looked very dishevelled, with blood seeping from her left shoulder.

"Are you okay?" Harry asked.

"I'm fine," Celeste waved her hand dismissively. "It became impossible to avoid every root while attacking the Treant at the same time. It landed a few hits on me, and the shield failed at some point. But I am still alive and kicking."

"Let's see if you have completed the quest," Harry said, opening up the notifications.

=====

Congratulations!

Celeste conquered the Wandering Aspen Dungeon on her own!

One Fairy Army quest has been completed!

Rewards: Celeste has obtained the Gluttony skill.

=====

Gluttony | Active | Level: 1 | Next: 1% | Cost: 0 |

Description: The Gluttony skill allows Celeste to absorb Shadow Essences without restriction. The higher the skill, the faster she can absorb them and gain experience. In addition, if she acquires another element affinity, it would work with the associated essence as well.

• + 5% to essence absorption

=====.

"Why does it have to be called that?" Celeste complained, although she still looked happy.

"This is cool," Harry said. "You don't even have to battle monsters to level up, although it would still be faster until you level this skill up faster."

"How many Shadow Essences do you have in your inventory?" Celeste asked.

Harry opened his inventory and counted them. "There are over a hundred shadow essences and fourteen superior shadow essences."

As he examined them, he found that they yielded fifty and a hundred experience points, respectively. It would be enough to level her six levels at least, and she could continue to grind this dungeon to obtain an infinite amount of them. The downside was that she couldn't gain experience from the shadow essence beyond level twenty, and level thirty for the superior version. They would need a higher grade to continue levelling her up.

"Awesome," Celeste said. "Now, let me loot the corpse so we can get out of here."

"I want to take a look at the underground lab," Harry reminded her.

Celeste nodded, flying over to the Treant and looting it. After picking up the loot, they headed downstairs and Harry began going over the entire lab with care, looking for any secret entrances. It was obvious that the lab was separate from the actual dungeon outside, now that he had thought about it more carefully. The lab remained unchanged even after he ran the dungeon so many times, unlike the outside which reset everything after he left the dungeon.

When he didn't find anything obvious, he started removing all the furniture and equipment with the Levitation Charm and taking it upstairs. Next he removed dust and grime from the floor and walls, leaving him with a completely barren room with immaculate white walls and a concrete floor.

"See if you spot anything unusual," Harry told Celeste.

Harry ran his hands over every inch of the wall, looking for any seams that might reveal a door. There was nothing. Frustrated, he turned his attention to the floor, getting down on his hands and knees to look even closer. He was about two-thirds of the way through when he noticed something on the floor. He ran his hands along a very fine seam that was almost invisible to the naked eye. If he hadn't cleaned the floor, he wouldn't have found it. He knocked on the floor and discovered it was made of wood.

Celeste flew over as he looked for a way to pry open the trapdoor. He used the most basic of ideas, using the Levitation again to try and raise one side of it, however, it was set too snugly into the floor.

"Destroy it," Celeste suggested.

"That's your solution for everything," Harry said but followed her suggestion. He stepped back and aimed a Reductor Curse at the trapdoor. Upon impact, the spell punched a hole through it, revealing another staircase descending into darkness.

He removed the debris and descended the stairs. He kept his wand raised because he wasn't sure what he would encounter. At the bottom, he found a short corridor that led to a strange doorway. Some sort of symbols appeared on it and it was glowing brightly. As he got closer, he realised that they were geometric shapes, and they were not static. They moved around in a seemingly random pattern, and repeated it over and over.

"Have you seen something like this before?" Harry asked Celeste.

"No, but I think it must be some kind of language. It's not something I have seen before. I wonder if the moving pattern plays a role in interpreting it," Celeste said, examining the door closely.

The door didn't have any seams, or a handle to open it, so it was more like a barrier than an actual door. Harry didn't know if he should reach out and touch the door, as it might contain protections against intruders. Gathering his courage, he reached out and touched it. Nothing happened to him, but he received a notification.

"Well, that was a letdown," Harry said.

"I would say," Celeste said. "Do you think Victor concealed this entrance with the trapdoor?"

"Most likely," Harry nodded. He looked at the pattern moving on the door and realised he couldn't copy it on paper. Instead, he observed it a few times, so he could extract the memory later and watch it in his pensive at leisure.

"Let's get out of here," Harry said after finishing.

Celeste perched on his shoulder and he used ID Escape to return to his room. He looked around but Hedwig was nowhere to be seen.

"Give me the shadow essences and open the Empty Dungeon," Celeste said. "I'm going to work on gaining some levels."

Harry followed her request, leaving him alone in the room. He grabbed a vial from his inventory and extracted the memory from his head. Taking out the Pensieve, he placed it on the desk and entered the memory. He sat there for the next half hour, trying to discern the language.

The more he looked at it, the more confused he became. It wasn't like anything he had seen before. It was possible that the movement had nothing to do with the language itself, and was merely a red herring. However, he could not find any commonality between it and the English language. At first, he searched for common letters to see if he could build a key out of them, and slowly identify the other letters, but none of them made any kind of sense. For all he knew it could be some alien language that didn't conform to a human's perspective.

"Maybe I should ask Hermione to have a crack at it," Harry muttered as he exited the Pensieve. He didn't think he would ever be smarter than her, no matter how much he raised his Intelligence attribute.

Harry made his way down to the first floor. Since it was close to lunch, she would usually be sitting down in the Great Hall, or still stuck in the library absorbed in her books.

He found her sitting down for lunch, alone except for Zero. The boy sat close to her, as she spoke to him, and he appeared to hang onto her every word. Harry approached them, and Hermione looked up and greeted him.

"Harry," Hermione said. "Where have you been? I couldn't find you in your room earlier."

"Around," Harry shrugged, sitting down next to her. "Hi, Zero. How are you doing?"

Zero didn't reply, scooting closer to Hermione. He had tried talking to the boy a number of times over the past few days but didn't get a response. The boy looked at him warily, as if he was afraid Harry would suddenly attack him.

Hermione shot him an apologetic look as she patted Zero's head. "Zero doesn't speak often, but he understands what people say. I have been trying to coax him out of his shyness."

"He is a mystery," Harry agreed. "I'm surprised Professor Slughorn was kind enough to keep him, despite all the trouble he causes."

Zero made a face at him as if he disagreed with Harry's words, and Hermione laughed.

"There is one thing I discovered," Hermione said. She turned the boy around after asking his permission and moved his long hair out of the way to show something on the back of his neck. It was a series of zeroes inked into his skin like a tattoo.

"What the hell?" Harry exclaimed.

"I know, right?" Hermione said heatedly "Someone branded this into his skin, like he was some sort of lab experiment. It's disgusting."

Harry froze at the mention of lab experiments. A terrible suspicion rose in his mind, although he realised how unlikely it was, as it would be a huge coincidence. Could it be that this boy was another one of Victor's experiments? Was this the reason why he was hunted by mercenaries from the Abyss? It wouldn't surprise him if Victor had connections with the Abyss, as he was a madman in his own right.

"Zero, can I ask you a question?" Harry leaned down and spoke to him softly. "Do you know a man that goes by the name Victor, or Frank by any chance?"

Zero stared at him for the longest moment, before slowly nodding.

Well, damn. Victor certainly got around a lot. Just how many victims of his experiments were out there? And how did Zero escape? He recalled how Professor Slughorn said that Zero didn't appear to age at all in the two years they lived together. How was that possible? Was he even alive, or was he some kind of sentient undead?

"What is it?" Hermione asked anxiously.

Harry hesitated. He didn't want to involve Hermione, but she seemed to have taken a shine to the boy, and vice versa. Was it right to keep his suspicions from her?

"Zero, can I speak to Hermione in private for a moment?" Harry asked.

The boy nodded and hopped down from his seat and ran off. Harry turned to Hermione and shared details about Victor. It was more information than he had revealed about his extracurricular activities before, so she was certainly caught off guard by some of the things he got up to. He still hid most of it, but it was still shocking to hear.

"Do you know who he sounds like?" Hermione asked with a dawning realisation.

"What do you mean?" Harry asked in confusion.

"Victor? Frank? He owns laboratories and likes to experiment on people. It sounds like the fictional character Victor Frankenstein."

Harry paused, cursing himself for not making the connection before. To be fair, how could he make the connection when he was not supposed to be real in the first place? If it was true, he may have another avenue to investigate Victor's background.

"Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818," Hermione said. "Would she have based the Victor character on him?"

"That would mean he would be nearly two hundred years old," Harry said sceptically. "Although if he spent most of his time in the Abyss, it's not out of the question."

"What does that mean for Zero?" Hermione demanded. "Is he going to be okay?"

"Who knows?" Harry shrugged. "It won't change your opinion of him, right? He still looks human to me."

"Of course not," Hermione protested.

"Then you have nothing to worry about," Harry reasoned, before changing subjects. "Look, I need your help with something. But you must not tell anyone about it."

"What is it?"

Harry told her about the strange language he discovered, and she was immediately intrigued, just like he figured. She couldn't resist a puzzle. Harry led her to his room so she could watch the memory.

It seemed like he was slowly getting closer to the mystery of Victor. He just hoped he was prepared for when he finally confronted him.

So, what do you think? Can Harry discover Victor's origins and find a way to deal with him? And what will Hedwig’s new form be? Will she change her species or will she just turn into a superior owl?

Thanks for reading.

Here is one of two other ideas. Strix which is iwl https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strix_(mythology). Or Caladrius. Which is snow white bird https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caladrius. The one I like most is strix and would fit as it is used in bloodd and curses the caladrius is healing.

Andrew Houghton

How about a Pokémon element to it? Hedwig evolving to Articuno 😂

TyrantGod

That's a good idea. I haven't decided on a form yet, but I still have some time.

GamerFiction

Thanks for the chapter ! Maybe something with ice power since Hedwig is a snow owl ?

Master Kuma

I am proud of the fact that I caught the Victor Frankenstein link a while back 😀

Maxime Cusson

She definitely won't be a phoenix.

GamerFiction

Hedwig should be a Thunderbird. Lot of fanfics have done the phoenix conversion.
