“I didn’t think he’d say something like that, but when he…. Um… ah shit where was I again.” April said to Haley from the backseat. Haley shrugged before putting the car in park.
“I don’t remember, you were talking before about the email you got… I think. I’m not entirely sure. I don’t even know what that is.” Haley said, before releasing her fingers from the wheel and turning to face her friend. “The question I have for you though,” Haley said, motioning toward the building in front of them, “Why did you cry and scream about coming here again?” she said. April scanned the letters fixed to the building. It took her a couple of passes to get the words right before they came to her.
“We’re at the daycare! Remember?! I told you they’d know how to answer our problem!” April said triumphantly. She started unhooking her seatbelt. Haley stayed in her seat. “What? What’s that look for?” April said to her friend.
“I don’t know, April! I feel like things are scrambled and weird in my head. What did we need to go to the daycare about? We’re supposed to be big kids. We’re not little anymore. Yesterday I got my first fish, and my Mommy said it’s my responsibility to take care of it. That’s a lot of weight on me, April. I can’t be making knee-jerk reaction decisions anymore.” Haley pleaded.
“They’ve got a ball pit!” April said, peering directly into the windows.
“Holy Moley let’s go!!!” Haley said, she unhooked her seatbelt and pushed her door open. April followed along from the backseat.
“Wait!” April said in the middle of their sprint. They stopped just outside the doors. April’s optimistic demeanor melted into a confused worry. “We need to remember what we forgot about this place before. Why did we come here…?” April said, “Think like really really hard.” She said before rubbing her chin in thought.
“Oh! I remember we wanted to ask them how far past 32 the numbers go. That’s as far as I got in the car.” Haley said, folding her arms in confidence. April rolled her eyes at Haley's mental flex. She mulled the idea over for a moment. That still didn’t feel right.
“I’m not sure, I thought it was knowing where fishes go after Mommy’s put them in the toilet. Remember you asked that?” April said to Haley. Haley nodded and pondered that for a moment. It was true, they did debate that question on the car ride over here. They were so close…
“Um…” Haley said, her eyes blurred, and became unfocused for a few seconds. Her mind lost itself in a burst of warm yellow sunshine. The warm trickling sensation in her thighs triggered a memory in her head. “April!” Haley squealed, still letting go, “We came here to ask them about potty training!!” Haley said, she pointed to the exposed adult diapers they had on. “I just remembered because I was going pee-pee, and you did the same thing in the car, and we tried figuring out how people know when to even use the potty!” Haley said happily, knowing they could finally put this debate to rest. April’s face lit up knowing they finally solved this mystery.
“You’re right!” She said, jumping in the air and giving her hands a clap. Her diaper swayed back and forth from the jump. The diaper’s center of gravity was low from her continuous use. “I want to know how in the world they are so smart to not use their diapers. I don’t even know when I have to go. You don’t either!” April said, pointing at her friend’s matching droopy diaper.
“Hey!” Haley said, placing her hands on her waist. “I can feel my diaper getting warm sometimes! That makes me less of a baby than you. You don’t even know. I have to tell you that you’re leaking half the time!” Haley said seriously to April.
“Shhh!” April said, leaning in closer to her friend. “Come on, Haley. We’re bestest best friend in the whole wide world. You’re my BBFITWWWs. We don’t need to fight like this. Even if it is true, I don’t want the whole place to know you’re better at realizing your diaper is wet than I am. You’ve always been just a little smarter than me. Remember yesterday when you organized my teddy bears in al-all-alpphhabetica order?” April said.
“Like I told you, G goes first!” Haley said.
“Right, and that’s why I need you. Let’s put this behind us and figure out the mystery of the potty together.” April said, holding her friend’s hands at this point. Haley smiled.
“To the potty!” Haley said. Beads of pee from her recent accident started pushing out the front of her diaper and splattered onto the floor.

“Are you done crying? Hm? That’s not what big girls are supposed to do.” The caretaker said to the blubbering Haley. She clutched a giraffe stuffed animal for comfort.
“I-I know… b-but… I wanna be with Aprillll!!!” Haley squealed in between tears. She was doing her best to calm down, but her emotions wouldn’t follow orders. It’s like they had a mind of their own. Haley helplessly felt them dictate her actions and words.
“I’ve already told you, you’ll see her in a minute. You wanted to know how the potty works, right? We’re going to teach you right now!” They said, positioning a computer screen next to the bed. The worker placed in earplugs before switching on the screen. “Have fun, little baby.” They said, before walking out of the private room.
“But I wanna know how to use…” Haley said, turning from the door to face the screen. The dwindling fire in her mind went out like a candle. Low-frequency murmurs filled her brain. “… my diaper…” She finished in her head.
The video had an iron grip on Haley’s attention. Even if the building started burning down, Haley wouldn’t be able to keep her eyes away. With each whisp that dance crossed the screen, her mind exploded with thoughts of diapers. The images looked distantly familiar to her. In her burning memory banks, she could faintly recall seeing this screen before.
She first felt the program systematically refigure her self-image. Haley felt as though her body was beginning to shrink. Not physically, but mentally, she felt she was only a foot tall. Someone that tiny must mean their brain can’t be very big either. That’s what the program told Haley, and that made perfect sense. All free thought in her brain deteriorated into nonsensical gibberish. That is if she could even feel her thoughts.
The inner monologue in her brain felt displaced. She wasn’t a being that saw and thought through her head. Her mind trickled out of her skull. Thoughts became fleeting, they physically felt like they were slipping out the back of her mind. She couldn’t pull her thoughts back, they were too slippery. Her mind trickled into an empty void. She didn’t feel anything in her head. All she was now was a series of bodily emotions and sensations.
“brubrud prisshh..” Haley said, her mouth working independently. She didn’t know those words were coming out of her mouth until she heard them.
The sinking feeling in her brain started appearing around her waist. All of her being felt focused around the back of her diaper. It felt like it was growing. The sensation of warm mush filled her existence. There were no other thoughts, her blurry sight couldn’t even see what was in front of her, all she was at this moment, was a messy diaper.
Potty training couldn’t register in her mind. Not only did that not exist in her brain anymore, but there was no mind in her brain anymore. All she could do was experience the tingling sensations growing in her adult diaper. To her, this was the only way she’d ever released her bodily fluids. Haley wet and messed herself freely. Like an animal doing it in the wild. There wasn’t hesitation, her brain couldn’t begin to understand what holding back even was. Pissing herself was a completely random, yet frequent, sensation that Haley sometimes registered after she was done.
Haley felt her head hit the pillow. Her vacant eyes stared up at the ceiling. The program had sanded her exitance down to the very last neuron. The screen let Haley’s body mount one last attempt at regaining control. Her adult-self had one dying plea to remain before it was gone forever. The video left the decision up to Haley. If she wanted an adult life again, all she had to do was get up and walk out of the room. The program mentally gave her the key to turn this all back if she wanted.
Three hours later, the caretaker walked back into the room. The neck of Haley’s shirt was damp with drool. Her eyes were misaligned. Soft sounds of gibberish whispered out of Haley’s lips. And the tapes around her diaper had detached from too much stress.

“Why is she acting so silly?” April said to the caretaker. “Why is she talking like a baby?” She said, cocking her head at Haley. She was limp on the playroom floor, her crossed eyes were glossy, and she was already leaking through her diaper.
“Well, unfortunately, April, your friend got really confused about how to use the potty, and now she’s like this! Learning how to potty train was so hard, she tuckered out her little head.” The caretaker said, patting the top of her blonde hair that Haley was currently chewing mindlessly.
“Huh? It’s really that hard to learn about the potty!?” April said in surprise. The caretaker nodded their head.
“Yup, if I were you I’d stay in those diapers for as long as you can. You don’t want to end up like her!” They said, April nodded. If an adult was telling her that, then it must be true.
“But!” They said suddenly, “If you’d like, we can help her get back to normal. She’d be just as smart as you again, maybe a little spacey, but more or less her old self.” The caretaker offered. April mentally chewed on their offer.
April had been living in Haley’s shadow her entire life. She was the first one to draw the number “1” correctly. Her Mommy got her a fish before April’s did. She always loved to brag about the fact she didn’t leak as much as April. Haley was always number one. To see her like this, mentally hundreds of leagues below April now, it felt good.
She knew this wasn’t the right thing to do. Even now, she knew that there was something off about everything going on. For some reason, April couldn’t even remember past yesterday. The farthest memory she could recall was Haley showing her some video. Everything past that was too fuzzy to recall. She knew that Haley had a life just like her.
“Keep her like this.” April said, feeling guilty pleasure run hot through her. “I’m the smart one now.” April thought as she felt warm pee begin spilling into her diaper. “Try counting to 32 on your own now, you stupid dumb baby…” April thought greedily to herself.
“Alright! You two go off and have some fun together then.” The caretaker said. And fun they did have. April happily took on her new role as the big baby sister. April even told the daycare after a few days that she was the one in charge of her. They obliged April by letting the two of them sleep together in the same bed.
“Yep!” April said, looking across her bed at the oversized crib on the other side of the room. She smiled around her pacifier, knowing that everything was working out perfectly now. She didn’t have to potty train herself and potentially end up like Haley. She decided a long time ago now she was just going to stay in diapers. It was so easy to miss going at this point. April doubted she’d ever know when she had to go again. It all worked out in the end!
Her legs squirmed in her knee-high white socks, and matching Pampers shirt. “I’m a baby.” April’s mind said randomly while looking down at her diaper. She didn’t immediately fight that thought. Her diaper was currently being used; April had just noticed after she was almost done peeing. “Not as big a baby as Haley though…” She thought, feeling content and happy to flex as the bigger baby in the relationship.
"I love daycare." April thought, letting herself lay down, and zone out as she slipped into a little world with her favorite toys.
