"There simply wasn't any other way to handle something like this, you see.

"This city...it's far larger than any of us can really understand, y'know? Hundreds of streets, thousands of cars, tens of thousands of people. Each life, so precious, so singular and unique... all of that nuance blurring with everyone else, once a crowd size has reached into the triple digits.

"At least, that's what HE must have thought.

"He was hoping to blend into the night, to melt away in the crowds and disappear into the night. On some level, I'm sure the life he took seemed just like that - a life, one among millions, the thrill of extinguishing the light in someone's eyes only further subsidized in the knowledge that they were no one.

"...rather, no one to HIM, or to law enforcement, in the end.

"When I heard what happened, to the one I loved, I was frantic. I lost days to the grief, and though the agony of loss slowly ebbed, it never truly left. Police reports were filed, statements were taken, and the news had their fun with the story. 'So tragic,' they said, so keen to keep a neutral tone in their reporting. 'If only something had been done to stop such a heinous act.'

"Indeed. If only something HAD been done.

"I'm sure he felt pretty safe after four months, never hearing a knock at his door. I'm sure his step got lighter as the days rode on, more secure in the knowledge that he had gotten away with his little spree. At least, before I broke that stride myself. That should explain the fractures that will, inevitably, find their way into your future report. It was a plank, by the way - light enough to swing, heavy & rough enough to get the job done.

"...where was I? Right, something had to be done. I confess, I may have taken things a touch further than I should have. Bribes, blackmail, threats...all to get what I wanted - the information necessary to track him down.

"He was thorough in trying to cover this up, by the way. I can't help but commend the efforts he took to make sure the trail was as cold as possible...but there are ways of making others talk.

"I'm not proud of what I've done. The life he took...that pain only stratified, affecting his cohorts through the actions taken by my hand. Did he ever wonder why they stopped returning his calls? I don't think so. He didn't seem the type to have much of a regard for those around him, so long as he got what he wanted. I'm afraid I've tasted that very sensation in this pursuit - another wound he's inflicted on an undeserving person.

"Regardless, that pain ends here. While you and your fellow officers will doubtless comb the crime scene for evidence of this man's killer, you will not find any. You'll take down the data present at the crime scene, take your pictures, and file your reports. The new may even have fun with this story, now that I've confessed to being behind other killings. You'll have this picture in your mind of a hardened killer, of someone with murder in their eyes, and blood on their hands.

"But you won't find me. After all, I'm just another face in the crowd. One among countless others, each as pointlessly unique as another.

"Waste your time in searching for me, if you'd like. I've gotten what I wanted, and my love can finally rest in peace."

Victim was found dead of multiple stab wounds, also having sustaining blunt force trauma to the left side of his head & multiple fractures in his legs. As the note suggests, there are multiple details that overlapped with previously reported murders, but the Cleanroom Killer has stayed true to their name. Not an ounce of additional evidence was collected at the scene of the crime.

Investigation is ongoing, though a productive outcome is unlikely.

So, I wanted to try something a little...different this time. I know we see Grant as a gentle, strong guy, but in light of Spooky Month, I thought I'd take his loyalty & protective nature, and twist them just a touch~!

It goes without saying that this is, once again, an alternate universe & is NOT canon to Grant's character or backstory...as far as you know, anyway~
