Ep. 365 - Post-Crisis Sonic 2

The finest panel in video games covers Sony buying Kadokawa, relitigates what counts as games versus DLC, and brings you the exclusive reveal of the Nintendo Listo. Hosted by Alex Jaffe, with Frank Cifaldi, Ash Parrish, and Brandon Sheffield. Edited by Esper Quinn, original music by Kurt Feldman.

SHOW NOTES:

1: Brandon, two years ago when Microsoft bought Blizzard Activision, you proposed something that would be really funny that Sony could do to retaliate. Do you remember what it was? (05:35)

2: At what point is a game’s DLC worth judging as its own entity? (12:08)

3: What’s the biggest gulf in difference between a game’s singleplayer and multiplayer modes, and what’s the biggest golf in video games? (21:17)

4: What is the Nintendo Listo? (24:58)

Apology Corner: None of the Hansons from Hanson are dead (32:54)

5: Feral asks, what are your favorite completely missable areas in video games?

6: What is the Morbius of video games? (42:50)

LIGHTNING ROUND: Arcade of Our Own (48:37)

Recommendations and Outro (01:03:37):

Thanks Esper, I haven't stopped playing MTG since your segment last week. weeeeeeeeee

This episode was great, and definitely glad to have Arcade of Our Own return. The swings of fortune and surprises are fun. The first real online community I was a part of was specifically the art portion of a relatively popular webcomic many, many years ago. It and the other artists are largely responsible for me having the career I do now, so I still think back on those times quite fondly. Also, I was really expecting Alex to drop the Golden Sun "Crossbone Isle" for missable areas, since he had mentioned the input code for the sequel not long ago. Then again, I remember not loving it, so maybe better left unmentioned haha

Why is Esper's WAH HAH missing from the end? Bring back the WAH HAH!

another lovely episode—the editing on the video version is great! shout to Ash’s contextually-perfect “don’t copy that floppy” lmao

I don't get considering Erdtree a game of the year because I did not like the original enough to finish it and from what I understand you need a pretty advanced character to even start the DLC. If it were standalone so that I could actually play it without having to play elden ring first, I would be more into it. In terms of other game awards nonsense, totally agree about the rapping Monk. I will watch as many commercials for Korean shovelware as Geoff wants if it means that we can get that rapping monk performance.

Great episode. Hilarious intro from Alex. New game is more entertaining than Violence Island.

Another great episode! Arcade of Our Own is my favorite lightning round. The gaming part of my brain really wants to earn credits somehow haha. I don’t think there is any feasible way to keep track of that for every individual patron, but maybe the dirtbags (or, uh, question holers?) as a whole can earn some for hitting certain patreon goals or something? I don’t even know/care what we could do with them, I just want to gamify my favorite podcast lol
