Ep. 286 - Musouls, with Blessing Adeoye Jr.

Kinda Funny Games host and producer Blessing Adeoye Jr. joins the panel to cover review scores for video games, Frank’s answer for good adventure game design, and the Capcom Five. Hosted by Alex Jaffe, with Frank Cifaldi, Tim Rogers, Brandon Sheffield, and Blessing Adeoye Jr. Edited by Esper Quinn, original music by Kurt Feldman.

  1. What do people expect from a review of a new game?

  4. Let’s all record some all purpose video game sample dialogue.
  5. Lloyd Irving asks: Rank the Capcom Five.
  6. Koei Tecmo wants you to scout the right IP for their next Musou game. Who do you approach?

for EDF I'd agree, but within the Doom franchise It might open up new possibilities? I dunno, maybe!

chewby, get us outta here!

(brandon:) I feel like a big budget would ruin EDF!! or at least make it a different thing?

I've been thinking that a future entry for the Doom franchise is to make a high budget Earth Defense Force-style game. Those new Dooms are great but I think an interesting path forward would be to expand the scope of the action, and battle hordes of demons on a screen that can barely contain the madness. Isn't this what makes Doom WADs so popular anyway? Seems like a logical extension of that idea. Oh Also, I've asked Ed Boon several times to make a souls-like game starring Scorpion set in outworld. Ed, if you're reading this, I'm still available to direct that game! lol

We got it, sorry!! just a little of the ole human error (forgot to hit "post")

looks like it! We'll fix this!!

Hi. Am I experiencing a glitch, or has this week’s episode not been uploaded to Patreon? I assumed it was coming late like a few weeks ago but just saw on Twitter that it’s uploaded to the normal feed.

Sam

i want a fromsoft/souls musou so bad, sometimes i just want the vibe and also to take out a hundred souls guys at one. Armored Core would also be so legit as a musou.

rob anybody

If you didn't feel the need to continue after those 10 minutes, I wouldn't say you absolutely need to return to it. The story weaves around in interesting ways and there is some variety to cut scene visuals, but the gameplay itself remains almost identical to how it begins. Don't know how well the writing holds up, but it is a game that very much felt like it achieved what Suda and team set out to make.

Dustin Reno

(brandon:) I've still never played more than 10 minutes of it, so I was very much the "well, suda was involved, so it's probably good?" person myself. I've heard so much about it though... I'll get around to it eventually!!

Blessing was such a great guest to have on the show! Your all-purpose voice recordings would be playing QUITE frequently were they a part of the games I play haha Really enjoyed the discussion around review expectations and level designers. And glad to hear killer7 getting some love still! Stumbling upon the Plot Analysis by someone on GameFAQs back in the day was one of the earliest things that made me realize that stories in games could be more than surface level plot beats. That's no fault of games, that was on me but between the aesthetic choices and abstract narrative choices made me appreciate what else was possible.

ah wow! forum signup was closed only very briefly, it's been open for quite some time! anyway koudelka is cool and those shadow hearts gay "jokes" are indeed terrible!!!!!!

My name's Ko. I'm beating down evil. I got Koudelka by deciding I wanted and instantly finding it in the first Book-Off I saw. Then I forgot it on the street of Ikebukuro for 6 hours and it was still there when I went back. Thanks Japan. Shadow Hearts is good, and is getting a spiritual Kickstarter remake right now, but the first game has a wildly inappropriate joke every time you go to the gay moxibustion healer guy. (btw is the forum signup open again? it wasn't last time I looked so just kept posting here)
