Brandon's weirdo list for Game of All Time

Since The People have requested it, here's the list I made of games for Game Of All Time. It's not comprehensive and I tried to be "reasonable" (lol) in my choices to make them somewhat more palatable for the panel, but I didn't always do that. I just wrote down a bunch of games I like a lot, and then organized them by year. I'll talk about this more in the game of the year episode but I think my criteria for liking a game aren't as odd as people think. First, there has to be an interesting idea or hook that catches me. After that, the game has to not screw it up. After THAT I want to play the game because it's "fun," and I'm no longer analyzing it. Most games mess up at the first point or the last one, for me. Here's that list. the years are when it was released in Japan vs the US.

That's it!! Enjoyyyyyyyyyyy

Comments

you should!! it had a budget PS1 port with a weird 3D version you can ignore, but with the original arcade version intact, called Builder's Block. It's generally pretty cheap to get, even today. it's maybe gone up a little bit but you should be able to get it for around $30.

Since No One has requested it, here's my basic boy personal favs list for Game Of All Time that goes through the 1990s up to (La Bamba from Late Night w/ Conan Obrien voice) the yeaaar 2000: 1990 - Wing Commander 1991 - Link to the Past 1992 - Mortal Kombat 1993 - Myst 1994 - Final Fantasy 6 1995 - Full Throttle 1996 - Duke Nukem 3D 1997 - Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II 1998 - Half Life 1999 - Super Smash Bros. 64 2000 - Deus Ex

man you shoulda slammed bullet witch on there

Nirvan West

bulletwitch is very brave, Swordcraft Story is very very smart

Chance

(brandon:) that all makes sense! obviously games are very subjective and I sure wouldn't begrudge anyone else liking anything. I speak only for my personal feeling!

(brandon:) love that battle system! Even if half the powers are useless or annoying. I beat it on DS and XBLA (three times each lol)

oh yea, that's what baby needs, a nice warm bottle, thank you. Good to see Clash of Heroes on there, such a great battle system.

At around age 4, I played this DOS game called Save the Dinosaurs that involved getting through a maze in first person to prevent the dinosaur you were playing as from going extinct (I think). This felt to me like the perfect version of that Windows screensaver with the maze. I think when I played the original Doom, the mazey-ness of it tickled that ancient memory. I also played it, with a controller, when I was much less comfortable with fps controls. The look controls being locked to left and right made it much easier to teach myself how to use my hands that way. Regardless, I appreciate your answer and I think it does track with what you've said on the podcast

(brandon:) oh that's easy. Turok is way weirder. feels like you're on a hovercraft and makes use of that mechanically. The level design is very strange and "open" in an intriguing way (platforming! world hub! jump up to a place you shouldn't be!), whereas Doom's is tighter and more claustrophobic. Also they're just totally different ways of playing - doom is about strafing and firing at the right moment, where turok is about aiming and moving in basically all directions. I prefer an FPS that gives me more freedom of choice in terms of movement, loadout, etc, vs having a "right" movement or weapon for x or y situation. Both of them have secrets, which I like a lot, so that's even for me, but turok wins for me personally in every other category, because I prefer a looser, more explorational FPS with some empty zones in it vs a very tight twitchy action-oriented one.

Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast is a DELIGHT. “WHEN I SAW YOU YOU WERE CRUISING IN YOUR CAR!”

Zack Daigle

I love that Turok is on here. I adore that game. I don't quite understand what puts that game above Doom 1 for you, but I guess that's why there are different people

Dylan

(brandon:) I think if I had put rise of the tomb raider on the list while hating on spider man, frank would've come and burned my house down.

(brandon:) get ready to enter my world

insert credit

(brandon:) nothing! It's good! I thought if there was gonna be a Silent Hill on anyone else's list, it would be 2, so I would put 1 and 3 on mine since they're my favorites to play. If someone had said silent hill 2 as a choice I would've been right there with them. Although 2 is uhhh too scary for me to start having fun with lol

insert credit

Huh, I've only played 9 of these for any considerable amount of time. I'll have to scope some out!

Silent Hill 1 and 3 but no 2 is interesting. What does it do wrong that the surrounding two get right?
