027 - Showdown at Cremation Creek - Part Two

Comments

Go FVR! Once again, the show kinda went off my expected path and delivered a straightforward episode. I think this is what happens when your show is just bonkers and unexpectedly insane right from Season 1: when you do something that follows the usual structure of an episode, you get something that's good, it's just not great. I think the fact that 20% of the episode is dedicated to the whole Dean and Order of the Triad stuff. Don't get me wrong, it was funny (and I'd love a whole episode that's just Dean's imagination), it just didn't match with the episode for me, and so whenever it cut away I'd think 'okay, that just happened'. The rest of the episode was great though. When Brock and Hank were flying through the Grand Canyon, fighting Phantom Limb's forces, man I was just hooked. I think it says a lot about the show that even the heavily serialized stuff was just as funny as the episodic one. I wasn't as into the whole 'oh Phantom Limb wants to be the Sovereign' stuff as the show thought I was, but I was definitely into seeing David Bowie kick Phantom Limb's ass. The hook this season is not as strong as the hook of the last season, but I think Season 2 as a whole has higher highs whilst avoiding the lower lows. It's just that while Season 1 had lows, they were inventive and crazy lows, whereas Season 2's lows are 'okay' episodes of TV. In a way, Season 2 felt more like a Season 1 than Season 1 did, and I think that's just fine. It shows how much confidence the crew had on what they were doing, and it leaves me super excited for the next five seasons of television ahead of us. Here are my season rankings: 1. Victor. Echo. November. 2. ¡Viva los Muertos! 3. Twenty Years To Midnight 4. Fallen Arches 5. Showdown at Cremation Creek - Part One 6. Powerless in the Face of Death 7. Showdown at Cremation Creek - Part Two 8. Escape to the House of Mummies Part II 9. I Know Why the Caged Bird Kills 10. Guess Who's Coming To State Dinner 11. Love Bheits 12. Hate Floats 13. Assassinanny 911 Season MVP: The Monarch, who went from a cool character to one of my favorites. Pete White's still my favorite though, with Orpheus a close second. Line of the season: "IGNORE ME!"
