Mega64 Record Club Ep. 63 - Can - Ege Bamyasi (#454)

Have you ever heard of the music genre "Krautrock?" well neither has Shawn. Today we get our first taste of it with an Album from Can. Do we love or hate this music? Let's find out together.

Like giving a Sour Patch Kid to a pilgrim

I love Future Days but I rarely go back to ege bamyasi. It's usually just Future Days and Flow Motion for me.

john barton

That would just flat out kill Shawn

I'm with you Shawn on the noisier stuff; I will never go out of my way to listen to that part of the CAN catalogue. I found them while listening to Primus, Frank Zappa and Gentle Giant which sort of bridged the gap. No one album did it for me but I'd always find something special when sifting through their work. Beside David Bowie they've also had an influence on bands like Portishead, Stereolab and Radiohead (covered their song Thief). CAN broadened the scope of what rock music can be and for that they've earned their status I think. Maybe top 500 bands would have been more apt for them.

Thank you shawn for telling it like it is

Paul

You didn't like Pinch, Shawn?! The fuck??!

Tyler Lajevardi

u should try listening to it until u like it

grimnarr

Ngl I fuck with Merzbow and noise music. Even if music is a generous term some times lol

DoflamingoSnailPhone

I unironically love Merzbow.

I felt like Shawn the first time I listened to this album, but then I got stoned, walked around my neighborhood, and liked it more.

The lyrics to One More Night on Apple Music made me laugh. There’s a part where Apple doesn’t understand what Damon’s saying so they just put “ambiguous mumbles” in the lyrics.

OH SHIT SCARY MONSTERS(AND SUPER CREEPS) I have made the argument that from an objective measure its probably david bowies “best” album as its kind of a distillation of the avant garde weirdness of his berlin period (one of the reasons people think so highly of CAN and krautrock is the influence it had on bowie at this time, Low, Heroes and Lodger are all heavily influenced by the movement ) into something a little more “acessible” but with a definite artistic vision so its kind of the David Bowie album at the center of every other David Bowie album. Also it just slaps.

Bam Bam is like a 4.5/5 for me. Total bangerrrrrr. Some PS2 sports game sampled that for their menu music I swear to God...

Sing Swan Song rips. I'd give 5 vinyl to that alone. The rest of the album is pretty good too, I think I'd settle for about 💿💿💿/𝟓. I also liked Soup a lot lmao... I like harsh noise and distortion and experimental schizoism so I was a fan. Edit: HOLY FUCK THE NEXT ALBUM IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS EVER LIKE TOP 5 EVER AND OF COURSE IT'S EPISODE 64 THAT'S SO CUTE!!!!

I didn't get to check out the REM episode, but I'm also surprised and don't get the hate as well. I will say this episode is about what I was expecting, and I take no insult in your thoughts. I want to mention the importance of Krautrock. Krautrock is more than rock music made in Germany. It is a specific type of rock birthed out of Germany that blended experimental, psychedelic, avant-garde and most importantly electronic music. The first rock genre to incorporate electronic music. There was nothing in the rock sphere as musically diverse and complex as the music that was coming out of this scene. The whole reason we have alternative rock, progressive rock, synthpop/rock, modern electronic, and more is due to this genre. Bands like Kraftwerk, CAN, Tangerine Dream, NEU!, etc. changed music entirely and their effects can be felt in every decade following whether it be artists like David Bowie and Brian Eno to Radiohead to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard to name a few. I totally get why you don't like this album. I will say, I think if you played and wrote music you'd appreciate stuff like this more, as well as improv and experimentation in music. It can be really easy to say, "Oh they just improved this song and farted it out in a day" Without understanding that there's still working within the confines of music structure while experimenting and pushing boundaries at the same time. I know to the average person it doesn't sound that way, but it takes competent musicians to do what they're doing. If you don't believe me try and replicate Soup exactly down to every intricate sound. You don't have to enjoy it, but it helps understanding why people, other musicians, appreciate it. Something that helps when getting into the more challenging side of music like this is just throwing every expectation of what you feel music has to be out the window. Open your mind to all the sounds, vibes, atmospheres. Don't be closed off to the noisey and weird elements. The dentist scenario is very understandable though. But just know it can always get more experimental and avant-garde and worse too lol There are artists that make music that is labeled as harsh noise and power electronics and sounds exactly what you're thinking when reading those names. Check out Merzbow or The Gerogerigegege if you dare. It's a good way to gauge experimental music to the point of being beyond what I feel is actual music and more sound experimentation and artistic statements. But yeah, just wanted to put all that out there. I still appreciate you giving this album a try and listening to it so many times consecutively. Stuff like this is usually better talked about after digesting it slowly over time, but with the format of the show I understand. I think the albums following this one are better and I wonder if you would have liked something like Tago Mago a little more. My favorites off of this one are Vitamin C and Spoon though. Very excited for next week though! Scary Monsters is my favorite David Bowie album :) Keep up the great work Shawn! I hope you enjoy that album more than this one!

I’m with you on this one, Shawn. Lmaoo this was nonsense to me for the most part but I will say that the drums really stood out. I think the mixing was actually pretty good, too bad the actual music was junk. 1.5/5 for me. Also as a Miranda Lambert enjoyer, I am happy to see her get dethroned here by can.

Pearstrike

Can is one of those groups that I always heard about but never listened to. I think I was expecting something more like Sparks (for some reason) so I was surprised it was so ‘jam-y.’ If someone put Ege Bamyasi on low at a hang I think I’d be more open to it but I don’t see myself reaching out for more Can on my own. (Not ‘hooky’ enough for me.) I did like how Vitamin C sounded like a guy yelling out from a long tunnel or down a dark alley. I’m So Green was my favorite, though.
