At least for me the movie always stayed interesting because the location changed every five minutes. Breakneck pace of a movie.

I stand with Shawn in that Terminator 1 is better than Terminator 2. I'm not denying how fucking awesome of an action movie T2 is, but the grittiness of 1 and how it's kind of a slasher movie rules so much harder for me.

I guess it was disappointing whether you knew the history or not. The movie was basically trying to show Napoleon's relationship with Josephine but was getting sidetracked with the huge battles (which were cool to see but confusing if you didn't know why they were there).
I don't think it would have added much to explain why all the battles took place. For all of them except Egypt the purpose was the rest of Europe said, "France can't be ruled by a guy who's not a king, so we're not gonna let you do trade" and Napoleon says "ok well I guess we'll go to war and even though it's France vs. everyone I'm still gonna win cuz I'm good at battles." Egypt was more for colonialism.
I also didn't get why they made Napoleon look weak and dumb when that certainly wasn't the critique of him. Also Napoleon was young and charismatic and having an older Joaquin play him as socially inept and erratic was odd.
2 shakers. Battles were cool, I hope the 4 hour cut has Marengo and assault of Jaffa.

Hes battling cause every power in europe was at war during his time, and that was a common thing during that period (take land and conquer your enemies), The executions are related to the french revolution, the french got rid of their royalty and a period of instability followed. This allowed napoleon to rise to power as emperor.
