Mega64 Record Club Ep. 43 - Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (#351)

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome to the first episode of Record Club in 2024! We start off with the year with the very artsy album by Roxy Music from 1972 "For Your Pleasure"...which seems a tad presumptuous. Let see what we think together!
Yea this album wasn't great. I don't mind the instrumentation, I honestly think I just hate the vocals. And the lyrics can sometimes go to hell, too. I rolled my eyes so hard listening to dream home when he says that life-size death-size line. Solid 1.5/5 for me. Oh and Jorge Ben is great! Africa Brasil is a great album.

I'm so surprised you liked this more than Avalon. As someone who really enjoys artsy music it's so interesting hearing your takes on stuff like this. Eno definitely didn't give himself enough credit back in the day I feel like. The man says he's a non-musician, but continued on learning and playing a multitude of instruments and making music in his solo career. He started the modern ambient music genre. Even just to have the ear for production/sound crafting and to be sought after by some of the greatest artists of all time says a lot I feel like. There's a few of his solo albums on here I can't wait for you to get to (Another Green World π) Also I'm extremely sad to say. but this video made me realize that there are no King Crimson albums on the Rolling Stones Top 500 List π’ Insanely insulting considering how incredible and influential their music has been on so many artists. Easily up there with Pink Floyd, Yes and Rush as one of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time.

My most controversial music take: I don't think I fuck with Brian Eno.
I've tried, for many years, across many projects and I've never been blown away by any of it.
Even Low needs way more Bowie's fingerprints and way less of Eno's.
More Than This might be the only Roxy Music song I ever listen to outside of Record Club--
"TOO MUCH CHEESECAKE TOO SOON" will never leave my brain tho...

Happy New Year, Record Clubbers!!!
I loved this album. Absolutely closer to what I had in mind when we listened to Avalon. The crazy saxophone really did it for me lol - I could definitely hear Roxy Musicβs influence on punk in that regard, they love shitty sax. I also kind of get the impression Bryan Ferry wants to be a lecherous lounge singer or something.
Do The Strand, Editions of You, In Every Dream Home, and Grey Lagoons were my favorites. Dream Home is absolutely the stand-out and I could not stop listening!!
Unless I was listening to Ponta de LanΓ§a Africano - what a cool track! I didnβt know Jorge Ben Jor also wrote Mas Que Nada, which is also an excellent song. I think the Sergio Mendes recording is more famous (at least, it was used in Austin Powers lol)
Ziggy Stardust is incredible and a decent follow-up to For Your Pleasure. Thereβs a reggae cover version that came out last spring thatβs worth checking out, too! Itβs called Ziggy Stardub - how cute.

Hell yeah Bowie to start the year off right. I wasnβt a huge fan of this Roxy Music album though, was kind of a dud to me. I liked Avalon a lot more. 2/5 pieces of vinyl.
