Hello everyone,
I'm planning two posts for the game. This first one will focus on the main character and the second one will focus on Animals.
So... This time, I REALLY went full parody. You're going to discover how far my sense of humor can go and I have no idea if you'll dig it ^^' But yeah, don't expect anything serious (other than doing the game seriously :p)
Since it's meant to be a full parody, I've already said it, but I wanted the Main Character to be Kaya because why not? So I tried to give her a trainer look, but it was harder than expected, notably because I was constrained by the elements I had at disposal for the 3D model. So while I made a model indeed, I needed to adapt certain things by mentioning them on the side to the pixel artist.
I've already said that my go-to in terms of trainer look was Hilda/Touko, well, believe it or not, but everytime I added something that I found nice, I realized it was too close to Hilda's look. I ended having to put Hilda's design on the side to make sure I wouldn't select something too close. There are some elements here I can't change but that I wanted changed. Notably the torn look on the shorts, the wrapped part of the top, the length (I wanted it longer), I wanted a bang in front of Kaya's head, and the colors to be a bit more hamonized (like the shoes, shorts, cap and gloves are all black but they're 4 different black.)
One of the thing to keep in mind when you do pixel art, is the resolution. So I had to use one of the original games as a reference to make sure everything stayed consistent (and also that it wouldn't cost too much to produce cause prices can quickly skyrocket with pixel art). I chose Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, so the resolution for characters and animals in combat is 80x80.
As such, here's Kaya's look.
(You might want to click on it and/or download it to zoom in x)
This is how the enemy trainers are going to look like. In the future, I'll ask for a much bigger version that would serve on the title screen, but considering the pixel artist only has a month and a half, he won't have the time to deal with it (there are other elements that have priority over it.)
And lastly, I asked nito to make the charset version. This time, it cost me MUCH more money than usual, because there are 7 animations (even if only 2 are going to be used for this version) and each direction has 6 frames. So a simple walking animation is 24 frames (6x4) when in RPG Maker it's half (3x4). And 24 frames x 7 animations (it's actually less, because some of these animations don't have all the sides but you get the idea) is a lot for a single character. If you want an idea, a single NPC for The Hunter 2 or SoVR is $20. Kaya, here, costs more than $100. So yeah, she'll be the only "custom" character. All the others will be made through the character generator I bought with the tilsets x)
Talking about the tilesets, here's another screenshot where you can see Kaya's model and another map for the game.
We're the 18th and I still don't know what will be implemented in the game or not in terms of mechanism. We'll do our best so that at least the fighting is working. But in terms of art, I can already tell you that there will be place holders because I asked for H animation over other things and that takes the majority of the time :x (I didn't want to offer something without any smut :p)
That being said, I'm also working on SoVR simultaneously (even if it's sporadic), on some bits. I can already tell you that this month of break is a good idea, because I think there will be at least 2 if not 3 months in a row that should have an SoVR update starting April.
Anyway, that's all for now!
See ya o/
