Steve's PlayStation Story - PlayNation Episode 1

Just got around to the podcast. I’m a bit behind lol. But i just wanted to say that thank you for hosting these podcasts steve! I like the solo podcasts and it was interesting to hear your background with PlayStation too

For me I'm kinda hit or miss with the duelsense, I love the adaptive triggers, it's a must for every gaming controller going forward, I feel like it's a little too heavy in the hands(I like my controllers a little more lighter) but I would say overall I think the controller is excellent

I'm super happy you're continuing the solo podcast in the form of PlayNation; I loved the WIN episode with Brandon but I also love this format. The DuelSense is also my current favorite controller. Unless I'm going for portability the controller makes the PS5 my go to for gaming. The gimmicks are great, in games that use them anyways. I particularly liked them in the PS5 Last Of Us remasters. I also find it to be incredibly comfortable, I exclusively use when playing PC games.

DualSense response: I was kinda whatever on the controller, didn't really care one way or the other. Astro Playroom was the only game I felt used the controller in any meaningful way. But then Spider-Man 2 happened and ignoring that was my GOTY, that game has the PERFECT utilization of the haptics, triggers, and more. That game was damn near perfect and the controller only added to the experience with forcing weird flipping hats around using motion or secondary actions only usable with motion. I love that controller when used well and the new Astro Bot has me foaming at the mouth for some creative uses.

Great first episode Steve! I actually started out playing PS1 with one of the first games I ever played being Spyro the Dragon (of which I still love dearly and have beaten countless times). I got a PS2 sometime after, which was basically my brother and I's primary console for years and I have great memories of that system. Unfortunately as time went on we ended up getting a Wii and an Xbox 360 (not entirely sure why) so I effectively skipped the PS3, and it wasn't until 2017 when I bought a PS4 on a whim and had a blast that I got back into the ecosystem. Like you, the PS5 is my primary console at this point, and it's put in work ever since I bought it in a Gamestop bundle in 2021 when they were insanely hard to get still. There are plenty of things to criticize Sony about, and I know some folks aren't the biggest fan of a lot of their AAA offerings in recent years but overall I still love the brand and its IPs and games like Astro Bot make me hopeful that we can see more of their creative side shine through in the coming years. Sorry for rambling! To answer the episodes questions: Concord doesn't interest me as it seems mostly uninspired gameplay-wise and I'm not interested in PvP experiences much these days. As for the Dualsense, I agree that it is extremely impressive and it's arguably one of the best controllers I've ever held from a tactile standpoint, so I'm almost inclined to agree about it being the best controller out there (currently, anyway). Regardless, thanks for making this and I look forward to what's to come in the future! <3

Great episode Steve! Really enjoying all this new content that GvG are making... keep up the amazing work!

Concord is part of Jim Ryan's way too large and overexpensive multiplayer push of greenlighting a bunch of live service games and teams not knowing much about gaming besides what's making much of the money is live service. So I'm not surprised it's had issues and not optimistic about its future. Cool to have the podcast I've enjoyed the WIN a fair bit, probably my favorite GVG content

The Dualsense controller is probably my third favourite controller of all time. Having also grown up during the PS1 era (albeit I was born in 1990), I had always been around their hardware and I had even gotten a Dualshock 4 controller for my PC before I even got a PS4 itself, and Dualsense is my go to for PC gaming alongside the console it was made for. I still prefer the Xbox 360 and GameCube controllers overall (though I admit there's some bias in that last one) but Dualsense very quickly rose up the ranks for me.

Howdy there! Really enjoyed listening to the first episode of PlayNation. I honestly enjoyed how you handled things this week: provide maybe a short update on something you played and provide some fun short stories about your experience with Playstation over the years. I know I'm not in the majority on this opinion, but I'm currently not that interested in the features of the dualsense. I've played Astro's Playroom, Returnal, Death Stranding Director's Cut, and FFXVI on my PS5 with it, and I never felt wowed by what the controller did. Like it's neat, but my opinions on those games would be the same if I played them with another controller. The most I was ever impressed by rumble in a game was when I played the most recent fan translation of Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 when your character uses the bathroom. Without going into details, it's a silly gag that could have just been a sound effect, but the game went the extra mile. You mentioned at the end how you would like the audience to show to be structured. I think you could play around with the audience participation where instead of answering questions from patrons like with the nintendo show of old, you could also bring up a general question to the audience and engage with our responses in the next show (kind of like how you handled the last patron only WIN episode by going through direct impressions from the community). Excited to listen to future episodes!

Great episode!! Really glad this format is continuing. Didn't comment on the last patreon win episode, so I'll say it here: Thank you for the good times!!! On the call for responses, Concord is unfortunately a game that even if it was the absolute best in the genre, I probably wouldn't pick it up. I have never been that into shooters, and the closest thing to a hero shooter I was into for a time was TF2, and even that was more of a hangout opportunity with friends. I do want it to do well if for nothing else but the years of development that were put into it. No matter the company (in most respects), it's sad when a team's anticipated game flops. On the controller question, the dual sense is fine for me. Disregarding extra feedback feature, which are very neat when they are used, don't get me wrong, the ergonomics are slightly not as good as the dualshock 4 to me, my favorite PlayStation controller. It feels much more like a standard controller in its body size and grip shape. The dualshock 4 had many more rounded edges, and the body size was small enough that my bottom 3 fingers could wrap around the grips. Normally my middle fingers sit slightly behind the controller, which they do on the dual sense, and it feels better when they can curve around slightly. As for recommendations, you've got a really good format with a combo of news and personal stories or general takes on past events. Might be cool to have some themed episodes and have patreons give questions based on that theme. Though that might be difficult to fill time. Just a thought at least. As always, really enjoying the cast!!!

Your karma story of loving kindness, or respect, bringing the 20th anniversary PlayStation (Hippo) to you was so connective! I haven't really played PS3 besides Project Diva, and was playing too much Smash Bros to get a PS4 or PS5. I was thinking of getting a PS5, or 5 Pro, tho...Neo: The World Ends with You, and FF7R are both on PC, so I'm trying to play patiently. Not sure I have suggestions really yet, but fun listen!! Good work.

whoa big papa steve the podcast master at it again. good episode steve. to answer your question about concord, i am probably on the camp of not playing it. nothing personal against it, i just don't have time for these endless multiplayer shooters. i still have almost 20 games in my backlog from the past few years, so for me to play one of these kinds of games it has to be REALLY special. that said, if it was a single player game with a modest campaign and some guardians of the galaxy flair i probably would have bought it from the get go, i do like the look of it. but alas, it wasn't meant to be. also i definitely agree with dual sense being top notch. like genuinely every time i hold it after playing switch or xbox for a while, i just think "holy crap this thing is incredible, i hope nintendo learns from playstation next time". and i rarely think that. that said, and this is 100% a side note and just me putting something out into the universe, i do hope some day playstation/xbox make a split controller similar to 2 joycons. sometimes i really enjoy playing a grindy rpg or something that isn't too intense and just lounging down with a mini controller in each hand. feels good on the old shoulders and all that. also that ff7 church music as the intro got me good. what is it the kids say, "oof, right in the feels", or something like that. thanks for the show steve much love dude

Welcome to PlayNation~! Thanks for the backstory for the first episode... Honestly, for whatever reason, I typically thought of you as GameXplain's "PlayStation guy," so it was interesting to hear about your history with Sony and how it ended up overlapping with your career in video game journalism.

Colin

I loved this episode. I really liked your approach to this introduction, personal anecdotes of this kind are always cool to hear, of course the industry ones but also how you got your special edition ps4 was heartwarming and very in line with the whole ethos of GVG. This is a great start and as someone who's never particularly been into PlayStation it got me excited to learn more about the company, it's history and maybe learn to love it as well. I think this is something you can take into account when making new episodes. A good number of people in the audience come more from a Nintendo side of the fan base so maybe this show can be an introduction to many sides of the PS ecosystem we may not be aware of. Anyways I'm rambling now. Great show as always, Steve
