Battle of Marengo Patreon Early Access!

Dear Patrons,

We are very excited to share the latest chapter of our Napoleonic series - the Battle of Marengo! France's First Consul does what we all know by now you should never do - disperse your forces in the face of the enemy... and finds himself in a desperate fight for survival. Fantastic work as usual by Patrick and Mike on this episode - we all hope you enjoy the video.

Typos for Merch is in effect (but if it's a point of factual accuracy, please come equipped with sources and references).

Patrick and Mike are now moving on to American Revolution duties. We also have Voices of the Peninsular War coming out in the next few days - so see you soon! And thank you for supporting the channel.

Toby

Comments

Thanks for the response. I will eagerly await this poll. Your soundtrack for Marengo must be the best one I've heard, absolutely brilliant! Even during the live event, there were so many comments complimenting the music.

Chirag

Hi Chirag, that particular track is called 'Hero Of Our Time' by Ben Hayden and it's an original commission. We'll definitely release more tracks in due course. We always put a poll out for which ones Patreon subscribers would like us to release, so make sure you cast your vote!

Epic History

Toby, will you make the soundtrack for Marengo available? At the very least, can you please tell me the soundtrack during Desaix’s arrival? Thanks.

Chirag

One thing I just noticed! It’s quite a neat detail that Napoleon's banner changed from "General Bonaparte" to "Emperor Napoleon" at the end. It really drives home that we’ve come full circle!

Cuirassier

Yes! Very unlucky with their ammo, the Austrians.

Epic History

Did a ammo explosion demoralize the Austrians at Rivoli?

Bjorn Bumactao

Amazing as always!

Eric Hu

I hope there is a standalone soundtrack to this magnificent splendour of detail. The channel and its subject matters remain so strong! I cannot deal with the amazing anticipation of Desaix's advance. The soundtrack matches perfectly!

James Shuker

In the last short on YouTube Joachim Murat is perfectly pronounced. Bravo!

Walide Achargui

At 1:50 is one of smoothest traditions I have ever seen

Hamza Elshakankiri

An epic video as always❤️ definitely later a Music Score of this masterpiece needed.. Cannot wait for other Epic Masterpieces..

First Consul

Thank you so much for the quick response haha, completely caught me off guard (its 2am here in California) Best wishes!

Victor Deleon

Napoleon is comparing the Guard to a stone fort - an immoveable object!

Epic History

No, onto other topics now! See our previous posts after the poll for the roadmap..

Epic History

I know this is a little late, but I’m curious as to what exactly is meant by “Granite Redoubt” I tried searching it, but the results were unsatisfactory as to make me understand what Napoleon meant by this name… if anyone could kindly reply, I’d be very grateful.

Victor Deleon

I was thinking slightly more along the lines of Blucher and Desaix swooping in,as it were, at the tail end of each battle but thanks for the comprehensive analysis of grouchy, much appreciated 🫡

Stuart Carver

Will there be an episode of what leads to Napoleon's coronation? Before 1805 ?

dylan peltier

Love this such a great video 😍 keep up the great work

dylan peltier

Doubtful!

Epic History

The artist is Alexander Averyanov.

Epic History

Yeah anyway it’s not a big deal…. If I can help with french prononciation, feel free to contact me. Your work is excellent and appreciated.

Walide Achargui

Thank you!

Epic History

The only spelling I saw was at 20:35 Bourrienne*.

chris MacDonald

We definitely don't use a hard k on Joachim, at least not in the Marshals video. It's possible we have been slightly inconsistent over the last 9 years..

Epic History

It’s not easy and not a big deal… to be honest even some French historians are doing the error. Another pronunciation error is Joachim Murat, his first name. In the videos it’s pronounced with the German prononciation of Joachim (“Joakim” with k)the French one of that time is Joa-chin. Again even French historians are doing the error. So I am really perfectionist here…

Walide Achargui

We did listen to a few French people saying the name just before recording, and did our best to replicate.

Epic History

Except the difference between Marengo and Waterloo is that if you watched the Marshals video Grouchy decided to follow his written orders rather than meet up and join Napoleon and to be fair when Napoleon was Emperor he always got furious when Marshals deviated from his written orders so in contrast Unlike Marengo Grouchy was just told to prevent the Prussians and the British from linking up Napoleon never said afterwards if you still haven't engaged majorly with the Prussian army by the time battle is going on where the guns are making the sound that you forget the previous order and march to Napoleon's position immediately none of what Marengo had was out in the open for Grouchy now while although there are similarities from Waterloo to Marengo it was under different circumstances because Napoleon had written an order for Desaix to return to him while Napoleon didn't write an order to Grouchy to return to him at Waterloo, that's what you need to know the difference between Marengo and Waterloo.

Gage Hardesty

Desaix did what Grouchy never could and “March to the sound of the guns” fantastic stuff brimming over with drama to rival your best. I wonder what you thoughts are on Marengo compared to Waterloo as to how much credit is given for victory? What do historians see as the difference I can’t believe they’ve not been compared. Desaix/Napoleon vs Wellington/Blucher? I guess the main difference would be that Marengo was by circumstance rather than a planned stand. A rather controversial and dicey subject I know.

Stuart Carver

Does the Shanty "Fire Marengo" have any relation to this battle?

Mohammed Alsaadoon

I found a Wikipedia link to the Battle of Marengo which has all the names of which men on different sides lead each divisions as well as Casualties that may be accurate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Marengo

Gage Hardesty

Strange because when I looked at Google maps there was no space between Castel and Ceriolo if you have the time you can look at it but if you wanted to present it to a modern audience then I suggest you have it as one word instead of two words.

Gage Hardesty

Yeah well I don't know what to tell you but the map is full of typo problems. Your map not mine.

Gage Hardesty

Oh I see ok got it

Gage Hardesty

The tempo is perfect, the momentous soundscape brings to life the singular battle with a lot of what ifs, Desaix premature death for one. His charisma won the day, but his demise paved the path to the future Emperor of the French.

Hethwill Wargames

As a side point, Suchet had written a note to Napoleon saying that if he didn't make it to the battle it would be Masséna's fault, when Masséna found out he wasn't entirely happy.

TankerBricks

So it should be a picture of a young General Suchet?

TankerBricks

Napoleon was 7 miles away from Marengo, 2 miles away from the edge of the map in this scene!

Epic History

We’ve seen it spelled both ways, but “Castel Ceriolo” with the space appears more common on maps of the period.

Epic History

Great point! You are correct that Massena (the person) should not be near Acqui (at least not by the 15th when we currently have him). While Massena did resume command of the whole Army of Italy as soon as he was free from Genoa, it was Suchet who led the advance guard of Massena’s command in driving on Acqui. We believe Massena himself was near Finale on the coast at this time.

Epic History

Good spot, Gage! When inputting some of the town names we followed the map linked below, but it has the typo you identified. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg09StFqZ1k7rud2TmJbeltSBrE3p-qLu_PtkQ5YFcWAs0viqrCGMx1zFWu1u8Y0kOsihIMCFykejQV79gFWuYa6jXdQwgCqYMFkmj6es-2n8PzQPYeV2h6YlGNCtlBEqIz9zfD_vNmU919/s2048/Marengo+0800.jpg

Epic History

Anyone know the title of the painting at 11:45 when the guard are deployed?

Andy Bartel

“Lost the battle of Marengo at 5’o clock…BUT I WON IT BACK AT 7!!!”- Napoleon (Rod Steiger) in Waterloo (1970)

Leonardo Espino

Found another typo at 11:29 around the top right of the video Lobbi is missing another "b" between b and I it comes like the Google maps comment if you use it you can see the name differences.

Gage Hardesty

Found another typo around 9:42 when you inputed before that Napoleon, the Consular Guard, & Monnier's division you last had them 2 miles away from Marengo but then Charles said here that Napoleon was actually 7 miles away from Marengo, if that's the case then here is a typo.

Gage Hardesty

I don’t know if this is considered as a typo but the pronounciation of Desaix is wrong. It’s pronounced « Dézé » with a z sound and not a s.

Walide Achargui

I didn't think the Rivoli soundtrack could be outdone... Now I certainly believe it.

Ciaran O'Neill

The segment when Desaix "marches to the sound of the guns" is just pure epicness, like chills! By far the best episode ever (and I keep saying that after every video)! Thank you so much for the amazing work you’ve done throughout the years on the Napoleonic Wars! I admit, it’s a bit bittersweet that this perhaps completes the chronicle of Napoleon's campaigns, but also excited with the videos coming up (Napoleon or other, and the American Revolution especially)!

Cuirassier

Great work EHTV, et al! Loved this video. Since the Marshal series I have loved Lannes, I didn’t hear his name during the counter-attack so I’m curious if he contributed much in the victory/conclusion of the battle. Can’t wait for the future videos!

Andrew Herbst

I love your work! It's inspiring me so much for a game RP i am running has a dungeon master. Thank you very much!

Luc Drolet

This is art....

MMC Montillla

What a gorgeous and thrilling video! You keep improving with each episode; this was one of the best!

Lord Kadlow

Amazing work which is, as always, well worth the wait!

Justin Bailey

oh my god what a brilliant work GOOSEBUMPS

jk kim

When you mention Kellerman I think it’s important to remind that it’s the General François Étienne Kellermann and not his father the Marshal François Christophe Kellermann, the savior of Valmy. The role played by Kellerman during this battle was absolutely key. The action of his cavalry saved the army at saveral stages. Lannes wrote it in his reports. Even Murat mentioned it. It’s still debate by historians why Bonaparte did not recognize it as decisive. Kellerman thought this was unfair. He was probably right. Anyway Kellerman got the rank of General of Division after Marengo.

Walide Achargui

A masterpiece

Daniel B

Fantastic. A first class production and really exciting. I was listening with headphones so when the Austrian artillery opened fire during the initial advance I nearly dived for cover!

Stuart Walker

This was epic .)

Paralightworx

Also at 15:21 you should quote Napoleon's words here so that people can understand what he said to them in clear context.

Gage Hardesty

Who needs Marvel!? Real men. Real stories. Superior to fantasy.

Daniel Knowlton

Incredible story and storytelling! I was crying tears of joy when Desaix appeared out of the vineyards surprising the Austrians. What struck me in watching this was the discipline and bravery of the French troops and officers. A lesser army would’ve collapsed and run for their lives, abandoning their comrades as has happened so many times before in historic battles. Had they done that, there would’ve been no opportunity for a counterattack. Anyway, great work Epic History TV! Keep it up and I’m grateful for what you do. Cheers

Daniel Knowlton

Reviewed another typo, in the Map of the Battle of Marengo, CastelCeriolo is not spaced out because by looking at Google Maps the space between "Castel" and "Ceriolo" is not seen so it's one word to notify.

Gage Hardesty

I cant help thinking about Waterloo watching this battle unfold. This must have been what Napoleon wanted, kinda like a second Marengo if Grouchy had "marched to the sound of the guns"

Rayroller21

"But at Marengo I was young..." (Napoleon in Waterloo - 1970).

Lewis C

An action movie could not be better than this video, this is brilliant !

Maxime Laravine

“The Guard dies, it doesn’t surrender”

Walide Achargui

A great video as always

Covfefe Dotard

I’ve actually put together a chronological playlist on my YouTube channel here - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLG0phwaTrjK9WSX1agX3pSKO0iqV6yILs&si=UsIv-wXcDR7Z_OoE

Eryl Williams

Fantastic video! The ever improving quality of these videos amaze me. Just when I think they couldnt get any better, EHTV proves me wrong. Can't wait for the first Voices of the Peninsular war, and I am really excited to see WWII in the EHTV style. Fantastic work!

Juan Manuel van der Zee

Is that the end of the Napoleon series now?

Matt White

Amazing video, loved it!

Matt White

Amazing video. I couldn’t sign up for Patreon fast enough when I saw the notification

Connor Gabram

Amazing vid, amazing soundtrack too; can't wait for its release!!

Michael Hopkins

At 21:11 it depicts Masséna coming from Acqui Terms, but I think it was Suchet coming from that direction? - Masséna was exhausted from the siege of Genoa and only named Commander of the Army of Italy at the end of June, Suchet in the meantime had launched a offensive that took 15,000 Prisoners (Bit about Masséna from the French Empire Website and Suchet's part from your Marshal's Video on the section about Suchet).

TankerBricks

Good video, I like it

Harvest

This is one of your best videos yet, if i could suggest something, I'd love to see a Polish side of a war in 1809 against the austrians.

Cristiano Ronaldo

What if you put all the episodes of Napoleon on cd and sell it on your website.

Mick Snijder

Amazing video! One of your best yet

Bryant Miano

Speechless. I dare to say this is your best one yet. Please keep doing what you do, I will be more than happy to support you as much as I can. Love your work so much! I am a male, 34 years old and I am not ashamed to say that I had tears in my eyes watching this episode. Thank you one more time and from the bottom of my heart.

Marek Václavík

👨🏼‍💻👨🏼‍💻👨🏼‍💻

Lee Vinson

So ironic that the Austrian order of the day can easily be applied to the French at 7PM.

Kevin Tran

Typo following my comment is focused on La Stortigliana which has no "T" between S and O of the the 3 beginning letters.

Gage Hardesty

Cannot wait!

MCC

EPIC history indeed. another amazing episode

Tony Kim

This was amazing! We would all love I think a special video on the imperial guard and the greatness of these troops and the fear they put on enemies. And exploits at eylau, the retreat from Russia where Cossacks refused to approach them, campaign of 1814 especially where these elite troops appearance was enough to have Blucher and enemies flee We would love that but anyways you are absolute legends. Thank you this era is so fascinating

Marc Baudouin

Awesome work as always.

Joseph Cunningham

This was epic! I think we all know the "true ending" of these series will be the 100 days campaign:)

MarbleHit

Absolutely thrilling stuff, cannot wait for the Hundred Days remake. May I suggest that when completed, the entire Napoleon series be set into a new, dedicated playlist on Youtube, covering all episodes in chronological order. I've found it can be tricky for newcomers to know exactly which episode to watch next when they start the series.

Melodic Meerkat

The Guard saved the army from being turned, and Desaix gave his life to transform a loss to a trumiph.

..

Bravo. Great stuff

Discorules

I say the same thing: thank you very much for this magnificent series on Napoleon. Again congratulations for the graphic improvements, the richness (particularly dense on this last video) and the number of paintings and drawings presented which reinforce the epic and immersive character. And of course this excellent narration, the musical work, the Epic TV History in short! Napoleon definitely has luck on his side... just like the Austrians a form of weakness: weak pursuit, General Ott and the surrender at the end! Even if I would like a mini-series on the Hundred Days, I would not ask for that much. After all, the War of Independence probably promises to be just as epic in the same genre. Looking forward to the next videos and series, especially Trafalgar. From the equally impressive series on naval battles. Thank you and congratulations

luc

Another masterpiece Toby! Fantastic artwork, music and animation (the bolts of lightening were a nice touch!).

Chirag

What magnificent art! The music, animations, detail - this was an absolute thunderous tactical thrill to watch! Thank you, Epic History, for all the work done to the Napoleonic series over the years. I look forward to seeing Napoleon's 100 Days campaign next year! 🎉

Medin Burnic

Astonishing to watch how Lannes and Victors divisions, although badly mauled, never fully broke, even when retreating. Really hammers home the critical role of officers and NCO's in managing an army in dire straits. Another great video!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

The brilliant way Charles Nove narrates what's going on and the use of music when Desaix arrives had me so immersed that I almost got out of my chair to join a fight that ended 224 years ago. Astonishing work once again. You guys just bring history to life in such beautiful ways, and I'm truly grateful for the work you do.

Marcus poopsicle

Great episode as always!! I wish Patrick and Mike the best of luck on the American Revolution series, especially with Ken Burns releasing his 6 part series on the American Revolution in coming out in Fall 2025. (6 years in the making)

Raymond Chiu

I'd argue, dissatisfied and disaffected army officers given that Paul managed to annoy the Army (isn't wise) decided to act.

TankerBricks

Also fair mention the previous comment has everything from Casualties and so on and I think what should be cool, at the end to spice it up is when the map has closed in and the music dying out should the Transition of the name Great Britain turn into The United Kingdom just for historical context and fun.

Gage Hardesty

Found typos in the map of Marengo in this link near the top best to look at them. https://www.britannica.com/event/Battle-of-Marengo

Gage Hardesty

Excellent work as always! 👏🏼🥂

RJ Santos

not recognized officially by Russian history, but some russian historians say Britain sponsored the killing of Paul.

Sorin Pochtar

Wow I knew the outcome and still couldn't quite believe that they came back from that.

Andrew Henderson

That. Was. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, that was probably better than Montebello or any of the other battles, now I can see why Napoleon calls Marengo his Greatest Battle, honestly well done Epic History you've done it again.

Gage Hardesty

What a masterful and artful telling of history! Truly epic and thunderously thrilling! Love the work!

Sean Hogerheide

Loved it but wish hohenlinden was covered more since from what I’ve heard, it was the big battle that made Austria sue peace.

Benson

Yeah the Copenhagen affair was tragic

Shaunsky

“They had us in the first half I ain’t gonna lie.”

Ismael Ali

Impressive stuff! I am very excited about the future video on the peninsular war :D

Martin Andersson

What a video! Have there been other instances where there was a pile of blood after the Guard was virtually decimated? That small effect really drove home the horrors of war; if that could be used a bit more on the battlefields along with cannon fired markings on the ground that would really bring a more realistic story to life than Again, fantastic video! I’m always so happy to know that our money is helping tell these absolutely insane brave stories for everyone to see too

Aaron Hernandez

Yessss

Master Oogway

Truly a magnificent conclusion to this era of Napoleon. What a battle, I was on the edge of my seat

HyperSonicX

Great work! Beautiful video

Eliott Hureau

epic as always

Kamono

What an exciting and epic conclusion to this Marengo Mini Series! Top Notch Quality as always! Congrats for the entire Epic History & PMF Team for delivering to Us this quality production! Looking forward for the releases you have in store for Us.

Richard Fernandes

I always wonder how proceeding events may have changed if Desaix survived this battle.

teamr

Just finished. Cant wait for WW2 videos!!!

HANZWAGNER X3

Excellent video as always! Ironically the fact that Czar Paul was killed in 1801, prevented Russia declaring war on Britain. The League of Armed Neutrality ceased to exist after his demise, meaning that technically Britain shouldn't of gone to war with the Danes, but Nelson earned his victory at Copenhagen in 1801.

TankerBricks

11/10 once again

Udel-jury

Amazing

Michael McDaniel

Amazing!!! Wonderful!!!

Dan.Gryn

Just made my day!
