Player character: your preference

Let us understand you guys better! ❤️

In a visual-novel type game, would you rather play as a pre-determined character and have him/her be shown in CGs, or create your own that would not appear in CGs? The latter would by choosing a sprite/portrait from a bunch of different ones or using an in-game character creator.

When you play a game with visual novel elements, how important is it for you to be able to determine your own character's appearance? Would not seeing your MC on CGs in a traditional way be a huge loss, or are you fine with art featuring the love interest seen through MC's eyes?

I prefer to roleplay in collaboration with the artists and creators making the game. Often in games where you can design a character (such as The Sims, Skyrim, Dragon Age, etc.), players can waste time idling away on choosing options, or complain that there aren't enough options or the options they prefer aren't available. I typically choose to play a game because I admire its art style (whether it's Civilization VII, Road 96, or Coming Out on Top), genre, and my capabilities as a player (I'm not good at Metrodvanias, Shoot-'em-ups, and Laborfantasies).

I am surprised (pleasantly!) that most people seem to not mind a set MC. As an artist, it's obviously my preference to make a pre-determined character as MC because it's more interesting for me to write about them this way. Thanks for your thoughts! ❤️

I think both are fine. I like having the option to customize but having a set MC is nice too! It just depends, I don’t have much of a preference and usually just enjoy the VN the way the devs presented it. For example the Our Life series by GB Patch is nice, and I enjoy it lots. But having read countless other VNs with a set MC, it doesn’t really take anything away from the player unless they prefer self inserting.
