It's pretty sad, the author mentioned in a Q and A that after Subaru got summoned his parents frantically searched for him and even the police investigation found nothing, they are afraid that he committed suicide. The family passes each day tearfully while the father tries to console the mother. Each day they are hoping to get a lead on Subaru. They have no closure, they do not know if he ran away, if he is dead, or if there is still hope. It's very heart-wrenching.
