I was just going through these episodes long after the fact and I came across this comment. I agree that it's strange that there are so many ogres left after their supposed destruction, but I have never heard this theory before. My best rationalization has been that there were more than Benimaru's clan or tribe of ogres in the forest. It doesn't explain why Rimuru didn't name them, but it could just be that they are too strong to be named in large numbers. On the other hand, why would a bunch of former hobgoblins turned ogres feel a sudden kinship with pre-existing orgres? My understanding is that hobgoblins and ogres do not share the same evolutionary paths. These paths seem to be set by the origins of a race, although with some variation. In any case, the author has been known to not be completely consistent over the course of the story's many volumes, and he himself admits that he doesn't always remember everything he has previously written. But if there is some information that I missed somewhere, I would be happy to see it. Maybe the upcoming Slime movie will have some hints at least, since it appears ogres will be part of the story.
