Russia Demands The End Of NATO

In this episode I examine the draft treaties submitted by the Russian Federation to the US in December of 2021. By looking at these we can see what the final Russian aim is in this war and it goes far beyond Ukraine. What the Russian government was demanding in 2021 was that the US remove its forces from Eastern Europe and dismantle the military infrastructure of NATO that had been built up after 1997.

In this epsidoe I make the argument that what the Russians are demanding is that a US leader agree to a capitulation on the same scale as Gorbachev and Yeltsin did between 1989 and 1994.

The other treaty referenced in this episode is the 1997 NATO-Russia treaty

Comments

I had not seen a detailed analysis of this aspect of the lead-up to the SMO, so thanks for doing this episode. In this vein, if you haven't done it already, some listeners might find a review of the whole period of the lead-up, say March 2021-February 24 2022, interesting, especially since we now have some hindsight. My impression is that the period was kicked off by two decrees of the Ukrainian government in March 2021--one vowing to take back Crimea, and another outlining a Military Security strategy entirely based around planning for a war with Russia, with the help of NATO--but that things didn't really heat up until the Washington Post published a story in October 2021 claiming that Russia was preparing to attack. Probably US government propaganda, but my point is that why exactly the situation started spiraling towards hostilities at the end of 2021, and not at some other time--considering how long the civil war had dragged on--is unclear to me, and might be to others as well.
