My God. Some filmmakers are hit-or-miss, still others are VERY hit-or-miss, and some of them are just... Ridley Scott. The same director who gave us Alien and Blade Runner (two films which continue to give me infinite amounts of joy), is also the same man who gave us 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Blackhawk Down. I don't understand... I've heard good things about his first film, The Duellist, also about the Napoleonic Wars, but haven't seen it. For his more recent stuff I did think The Last Duel was actually pretty good.

Alex doesn't include in his list of comparisons the 2002 four part series "Napoleon" , a France Canada Britain production with Christian Clavier as Napoleon and Isabella Rossellini as Josephine. John Malkovich plays Talleyrand. A more thorough and serious account of his career.
