Thanks for addressing Berletic's view. It seems to me, though, that one thing he's trying to do is explain how it could be rational for Hamas and their allies to target civilians in the way they did, given the extremely destructive reaction they had every reason to expect from Israel. The plan you attribute to Hamas and co., of drawing the Israelis into a bloody ground war in the hopes of exacerbating the internal contradictions of Israeli society, seems extremely risky. There are many variables the Palestinians cannot control. For example, it sounds like the Israelis have other options besides accepting a costly urban war, like carpet bombing, starvation, etc. The Palestinians also cannot control what happens within Israel, or the reactions of the Arab states. From that perspective, it becomes a bit hard to see what the calculus could have been, on the Palestinian side, that would have made the attacks on civilians seem worthwhile, given the certainty of a very destructive reaction and the extreme uncertainty of the pay-off.
