How pivotal was the Chernobyl accident in 1986 in the late history of the USSR and did it, as Mikhail Gorbachev believed, lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union?

A few shows ago you mentioned that some Troskyists in the 1960s came out in support of US intervention in Vietnam. It seems to me that this is part of a bigger pattern, in which Marxists differ wildly in their responses to issues and events. Besides the responses to imperialist wars, other examples include COVID, various "culture war" issues (prostitution legalization, transgenderism, climate-change alarmism, etc., etc.) and economic issues like growth v. degrowth. Is the problem just opportunism and errors of interpretation, or might there be a sense in which Marxist theory doesn't sufficiently constrain analysis, thereby enabling the proliferation of divergent interpretations?
