This is an incident we now refer to as, 'Firing Plasma Torpedoes at the Plot'. My group was playing a SciFi game, and the party's ship had just warped to an asteroid belt where they wanted to save a plot-critical NPC. The players spotted the NPCs ship, and also several enemy ships hiding in the asteroids waiting to ambush. A brutal space fight followed, but things were going in the party's favor. At least, until they decided to fire torpedoes at one of the enemies. In my defense, we were using miniatures and a grid, so the Players should have fully realized that the disabled NPC ship was directly behind their target, and so when the players missed their target, and the torpedoes continued flying forward, it was entirely reasonable for me to roll to have the torpedoes hit the NPC. Which they did... causing enough damage to atomize the ship, no possibility of survival for the NPC in need of rescue. The Players were incensed, but I contend then and now they did it to themselves. Explosives in motion stay in motion, Newton is the deadliest DM in space. Justices, who was right, who was wrong, who needs to be kicked out of an airlock? (PS if it matters - the game was Rogue Trader, a Warhammer 40k RPG)
