Small, cool looking rocks (or seashells, location permitting) are one of the best souvenirs for young nieces and nephews.

So I was bitten a lot by piranhas when I was working in the Amazon. The water is so murky they don’t really know what you are, but they are ravenously carnivorous, so they bite everything they swim into. But their bites feel like a tight muscle twanging - nothing crazy - because they’re just nibbling to see if you’re worth eating. And humans are way too big for most species of piranha to mess with (though the bigger species will go for you) so after one bite they’ll leave you be. Fishing for piranhas is crazy though. You dangle a bit of meat on a hook, drop it into the water, and they will instantly bite it. I watched indigenous Amazonians catching countless piranhas with such ease because of this, and the water was frothing like crazy because they piranhas were just going nuts for the meat on the hooks. Basically they will go crazy for big meat if the big meat is already dead. Otherwise they’ll eat anything their size or smaller. They won’t kill and eat an entire cow in 10 minutes like the old tale goes - but they would devour a dead cow in very short order.

When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with "beauty rocks" (which were just rocks I thought were beautiful). Once, when I was about 4 years old, I was wearing overalls and my mom took me to the beach. When we went to leave, she tried to pick me up to get me in the car and she hurt her back because I'd filled every pocket to overflowing, which had doubled my body weight.
I'm beyond proud to say that my daughter continues this tradition. I'm constantly finding beauty rocks in her pockets and bookbag. She also collects sticks. Those are harder to store but I find a way.

IDK who needs this but there's an interesting book "1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed" by Eric Cline and an NPR Throughline podcast episode (What Happened After Civilization Collapsed) about the collapse of the Bronze Age that I super enjoyed and was so nerdy-excited when Emily was talking about it. Cline is their main guest in the episode.

But they also still went on to send my parents the leaf, so that was pretty cool of them lol)

Daddy chill 💀
They were talking about this and actively searching for real life answers, I’m a toxicologist, I answered, you’re the only one in this equation taking it personally
Blue ring octopus are both venomous and poisonous, but the venom from being stung (injected) is far more dangerous than the poison you’d feel eating one (ingested), so that argument doesn’t work, because it’s still agreeing with me that poison and venom are different
Krista P.
2025-03-07 20:45:28 +0000 UTC
Plenty of venoms are also poisonous, like the blue ringed octopus.. also, these piranhas were clearly starved and voracious going by Jake's description. Oh and also, THIS IS DND. If you've ever listened to an episode of dungeon court you know how much the two crew hates comparisons with real life mechanics as an argument.
Wouter Van Goey
2025-03-07 20:42:00 +0000 UTC

2025-03-07 20:25:50 +0000 UTC
Venom is injected, poison is ingested. A “poison dart” is actually venomous, and sucking does nothing. This is a common myth. Venom is injected directly into the bloodstream, and nobody is quick enough to suck it out.
Piranha are not dangerous to adult humans, and the only way to really trigger an attack would be to get in the water with them during a feeding frenzy while bleeding and splashing. Normal swimming is common and safe.

Leave the rocks and stones in piles in the garden - it is great for biodiversitet to create small habitats for all the nannerflies of the real world :)
@Emily I think you would greatly enjoy The cloudspotters guide by Gavin Pretor-Pinney - It's a book that teaches you about types of clouds, and there are stories, mythology and poetry about clouds throughout. It is both very entertaining and it will make you enjoy clouds greatly.

Don’t suck the poison out. It doesn’t do anything other then transfer bodily fluids and poison into the ones who did the sucking.

A friend of mine said his uncle was killed by piranhas so I’m still unclear on how dangerous they actually are

Roosevelt was touring South America, and someone got the idea to blow his mind, so they starved a school of pirhana and then tossed a cow in.
To the lily white witnesses seeing this for the first time, they reported back that "fish down here are fucking crazy, ya'll", and that's literally all it took. But really, you could recreate that with Jack Russell terriers. Pihrana aren't special.
