My quiet cousin response: were I the DM I would have made the party roll charisma (the most social skill) in every new scene to notice the cousin's character is missing. Just because the players don't notice doesn't mean their characters wouldn't either. I would have set the DC to something like 22 minus the cousin's character's charisma score (not bonus).
