I once had a DM pull a very similar backstory 180 on my character mid-session. They changed her ex girlfriend into an ex boyfriend with a completely different name and personality. They made him a weenie underling in a cult with a Dennyish voice when the original character had been a ruthless pirate captain who my character lost her ship and crew to in the fallout of their messy breakup. The DM acted surprised when I had no idea who the weenie cult guy was when they introduced him. We were several sessions in and had not discussed this change at ALL. It made my character into a liar and made me look like an idiot. Needless to say, I got up and left as soon as it was clear that the DM was not joking.
