and at 45, as much as I get the "don't let people roll if they can't pass" mentality, there are modifiers to rolls that can come up and change the roll after, furthermore you can have failure/success by degrees, it's still well worth rolling knowing that a 20 fails if the player or and ally could bust a bardic or a flash of genius or something

are people just unaware that suffocation rules exist? man the reputation dnd players have for not reading the PHB is totally earned Suffocating A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds). When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it can survive for a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 round). At the start of its next turn, it drops to 0 hit points and is dying, and it can't regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again. For example, a creature with a Constitution of 14 can hold its breath for 3 minutes. If it starts suffocating, it has 2 rounds to reach air before it drops to 0 hit points. right there in chapter 8 of the PHB

It should be session 14 or whatever and CHAPTER 13 still. They had to meet again because the chapter wasn’t finished but the session was. Sessions are based on time and chapters are based on story content.

i know it was clarified as a silly joke but as my party's Forever Note Taker it would legitimately annoy me to argue about the session labeling! cramming the amount of substace that would, time-wise, count as two separate sessions into one subdivision of notes would make it needlessly busy & harder to keep track of physically & mentally imo. don't make me try to associate two separate days as the same session, my memory is already taped together with sticky notes & adderall T-T i would not be able to hold both of those competing labels in my head & still remember the actual details x-x

When it comes to checks that are impossible I'm fully on the DM's side there. If a player wants to attempt it it's up to them to manage their own expectations. And failing that spectacularly is just as good of a story beat as succeeding. That is the moment where that character realized they just weren't good enough yet, and maybe that would spur them to train and explore how they can get better. DM was in the right. Players can try anything, but they're never guaranteed success.

I think you can have a session number for tracking how many times you played but maybe on the prep notes have chapters for story beats and maybe even arcs for longer plots. I agree that it would be two episodes but in chapter terms it's one chapter.
