I would write a nemesis lightfoot halfling with the same abilities as the PC from their backstory, who is riding on an ogre or other massive creature/construct.
“All of you and your friends have run and hidden from me (alluding to NPCs friends he has killed), how many of your friends do I need to tell him to kill before I can get to you?”

there may be some finicky way around that vis a vis putting the grappled creature on your mount, or having a tenser's floating disk within your reach (all you need is a 20 foot reach), or somethin, but the rules are pretty not good in that regard. if you're mounted and your mount is carrying a wagon or a chariot or something, surely that would do it

I have a rogue that is a light foot halfling and she’s always using our beefy dwarf cleric and Dragonborn paladins as cover, mostly to hide. A lot of times I just can’t hit her at all and it’s still very fun because I have been putting them against pretty strong people and it’s fun to let people who build tanks play their character actually tanking most the damage. (120 hp for paladin and 45 for rouge, some of my monsters would maybe kill her in one turn so this is much better lol)

I have this in one of my games, where the lasso-er can get an enemy on a ranged attack, and chooses how much slack they want to give on that turn, while lasso-ed if either person(both the target and the lasso-er) wants to move more than that distance from each other, they have to make contested athletics checks, pulling the other person with them on a success at half speed.
If the target wins on their turn, the lasso-er has the choice to be pulled or increase the distance of slack or even just drop the lasso.
If the lasso-er wins on their turn, they can choose to stay still and decrease the lasso distance by the amount they would have moved instead (still pulling the target)
The target also has the chance to beat a dc on their turn to break/slip free or attack and cut the lasso as well.
It’s kinda complicated and hasn’t come up a ton, but it’s silly and we’ve been having fun with it.

I truly don't understand their problem with the grappling thing. this is just weird to listen to. it sounds like utterly new players saying they think something is broken just cause they've never heard of it. granted the mounted combat rules suck and are near non existent

But even with powerful build you would only be able to move a grappled creature without penalty if it were small or tiny. You couldn’t do it to a medium creature since it is only one size smaller.

First case with the justices dismissing a different ttrpg system based on one uninformed player's experience has made me question my faith in the legal system
System is definitely Pendragon btw and honestly i find it odd that a player in current year wouldnt give a cursory goog to look at the mechanics

If a Goliath bard has a hasted steed they can absolutely put them in timeout, and there are absolutely rules for it. You use you action to grapple, and if that is successful you can pick up the person. A Goliath would be able to carry most creatures without any I’ll effects in it’s speed. You then use half of your movement to mount your steed, 250 feet of your mounts movement, a free action to drop the grappled person to the ground, another 250 feet back to the fight, and you still have 40 feet of your steeds movement, a bonus action to give a bardic inspiration, and the other half of your personal movement to get back off of your steed. It all checks out to me.

For the roll 20 roller person: I had the same issue but on foundry. If you are using the physics simulation, it's buggy and only clusters around a few roles because it simulates the random roll starting from the same point. We turned off the physical roller simulation and the results became normal again

On the lightfoot halfling case, I think RAI is that a LF halfling can use another creature as an terrain/obstruction that allows them to take the hide action, deferring to the hide action rules

What are the odds of rolling a one seven times in 11 rolls?
Around .000021%. If you prefer odds to probability, we're talking a 21/100,000,000 longshot.
Put even simpler, you're looking at about a 1 in 5,000,000 chance of this happening.

Suggested solution for the “Timeout Bard”
The bard, while mounted, can make a grappling check on someone.
On a regular success, the bard successfully grabs the person with the grapple, and are able to drag them up to half speed. (dragging someone while riding a horse).
On a fail, the enemy is able to avoid being grabbed by the mounted bard.
On a critical success, the bard catches the enemy off guard and is able to pull them onto the side of their horse, and can then zip zip 500 feet away with haste or whatever and put them in timeout.
Thoughts? :)

(Sorry in advance for the long read! LOL)
I have pretty much this exact lightfoot halfling build! Murph would hate my character, probably. She's a pastel pink kobold (my beautiful, wonderful DM let me use halfling stats) named Jingle Pink Hee Hee. Jingle Pink is an escaped illegal exotic pet with a silenced bell collar and a gremlin voice. We leaned hard into roleplaying rehabilitating this feral monster into society as her world expanded exponentially past the carelessly cracked-open window of her family's home. (She couldn't remember what they called her after starving on the streets for so long, so she came up with Jingle Pink Hee Hee herself.)
The campaign was airship pirate themed, so I took the thief rogue class to make full use of second-story work, scampering around on the rigging and manipulating objects to my advantage. My partner was a prim and proper lady Goliath paladin named Tiffany Locke. Jingle would climb up and around her to hide during battle and dish out mindblowingly powerful sneak attacks with the little dagger she carries in her mouth.
My DM had no problem dealing with Jingle. Whenever I hid I rolled stealth against the passive perception of enemies, so it didn't always work. Also, Jingle was exceeding fragile, so even with Uncanny Dodge any attack that landed made a big impact. She had to be right in the middle of battle for this strategy to work.
Depending on the individual enemy, they might take an action to look for her, use AoE spells to hit her, knock Tiffany prone or grapple her ("kill your friends!"), etc.
Fights were usually for some ulterior purpose rather than just for the sake of having battles in DnD, so sometimes Jingle would need to use her bonus action to problem solve with Cunning Hands instead of hiding in order to win the day.
Also, Jingle was the best scout in the group, so when we explored the mainland she was usually the one to scout ahead. She's really sneaky, so the risk was worth it to us, but she'd been ambushed more than once while out on her own and had to run away or risk dying.
Jingle was probably the most fun I've ever had playing battles because her build inherently tied itself to roleplaying and cooperation. She's a blast for everyone, including the DM!
So all in all this build isn't that frustrating. For example, currently, I'm playing a sorcerer who IMHO is worse because he spams buffs and lightning from a distance. He gets hit way less than Jingle ever did, and once he reaches level 14 and gets his dragon wings, he'll be so annoying. (As long as he doesn't keep losing his cool and going for unarmed strikes that mechanically do literally zero damage. LOL)

So, during the discussion of the Froghemoth, Murph said something that got me thinking. His reasoning for Bullywugs canonically having teeth is that they have a Bite attack. But, the Bullywug's Bite attack deals bludgeoning damage, whereas something like a wolf's Bite attack does piercing. It seems more likely to me that a Bullywug's 'Bite' attack isn't it taking a chomp out of you, but trying to swallow you.

Cover is directional, so you can have cover from one creature and not from others, or different values of cover simultaneously. You have to interpret cover from the perspective of the creature trying to make the attack. If your target was on the other side of a wall that completely obscured their body, that would be total cover. But you could put a fireball off to the side of the wall and still catch them. If you were on the same side of the wall as that creature, no cover.
Emily's spot on in her interpretation--the halfling can get total cover behind their friends, but only to creatures that aren't able to see around the friend. A flying enemy could fly above or really any enemy could literally just walk around them.

Regarding the Timeout Bard:
Murph was kind of on the right track, but he did indeed get lost in the math.
Spending 10ft of movement to grapple and move the enemy onto the horse would leave the Bard with 20ft. Since mounting is half of his movement (15ft), he will still have 5ft remaining on that turn.
That being said though, I would probably rule that the Bard should at least roll the grapple checks with disadvantage because wrestling a humanoid while mounting/riding a horse is crazy 😂

Hi, the coward here. We are playing One Ring, and our campaign is set in the decades between the ending of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. Re: time-out Bard, as soon as they drop the creature off and head back to battle, that creature gets an attack of opportunity and if they hit the Bard they force a concentration check to keep up haste. If they lose concentration both the Bard and the mount miss their turn as their haste ends. It'd at least make them think about the risks in the future.

Thank you for taking my case! If you're curious, we're playing One Ring, an officially licensed TTRPG for the Lord of the Rings franchise. So if I had played an elf (who never ages) or a dwarf (who lives for hundreds of years), the aging mechanic would not be a big deal. But I didn't. I chose to be a human, who went from a healthy adventurous 28 to a haggard 40 in the blink of an eye.

For the grappling while mounted rules, since the player is a Barbarian, they have Proficiency with nets and you can absolutely catch someone with a net, drag them hundreds of feet and abandon them. It's just a Dex Save on the NPC's part and if it's a problem with a BBEG, they got Legendary Resistances hopefully. If not, it's time out time

Regarding the rug question, I actually did set up a room where they had to roll on damn near everything. But in my defense they were investigating a crime scene and I built the encounter as a point and click adventure game where they rolled a base investigation check and then clicked on various areas of the map(a Japanese highschool lab background I believe I took from a dating sim) where I had certain flags set up for what they found based off their investigation.
It is doable to have a "check for every specific area" but it really should be used sparingly and in those situations.
Also it led me to build a murder mystery party session in another game where you're basically playing a Mashup of Clue and Werewolf.

For the steed - I would make two roles - if on the horse then the grapple is at disadvantage and then a strength check (dc determined by creature) or if not on the horse then normal grapple but strength check at disadvantage as you are trying to mount while holding someone. Make the dc hard and tell them before the role lol.

I was the DM for the froghemoth vs milk 😅
To add some minor clarification. I believe I let the alchemist summon milk instead of beer from their alchemy jug since the goblin alchemist was just baby. She didn’t drink beer.
But I feel validated for Murph immediately agreeing with me lol. If it was a beast like a giant frog I’d reward that knowledge and probably allow it since it was just a oneshot. But since the froghemoth is a monstrosity I determined it wouldn’t have the same limitations as a frog’s digestive system. Especially since they tend to eat everything!
Was real fun recognizing the title. A real good episode 👌

I play a 380 year old gnome bard who has "aging mechanics," but it was decided between the DM and myself. It only happens with every level up, such as they can't take a physical ASI or feat, and their HP can be impacted if they don't work to prevent it. Honestly it was great because they became a more and more powerful spellcaster/face of the party while the other characters worked to protect them. But that was 100% my choice.

2023-03-02 13:21:13 +0000 UTC
But unlike invisibility, all the attacker has to do is move so they can see behind the person blocking the Halfling. Hiding doesn't make you invisible. If a creature has line of sight to you where you attempt to hide, you technically can't hide. From D&D Beyond:
"You can't hide from a creature that can see you clearly, and you give away your position if you make noise, such as shouting a warning or knocking over a vase. An invisible creature can always try to hide. Signs of its passage might still be noticed, and it does have to stay quiet."
So, sure, go behind your friend. You still need to 1) use your action (or BA cunning action or equivalent) to take the "hide" action, and 2) remain concealed. If a rogue hides behind a box, and the attacker gains line of sight behind the box to the rogue, the rogue is no longer concealed/hidden--or at least, that is how I'd rule it.
Joe F.

Total cover question: basically the same as invisibility. Can't be targeted directly but you can attack the space they are in at disadvantage.

With the mounted Bard I do think it was lost for the movement argument that the players movement would *also* be doubled because the greater Steed is presumably hasted because the rider is hasted "While mounted on it, you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target the mount" which also gives them haste as well. Caldwell was brushed off bringing up that it was a goliath but they do actually have a mechanical trait that counts them as one size larger for pulling and lifting so that also feels pretty relevant.

I find it suspicious that the player didn't mention the name of the aging\heir game system.
When playing new systems, I've seen so many players rely 100% on the DM, even ignoring the player specific materials. Then they get surprised by some core mechanic and blame the DM.
