2023-02-14 05:10:55 +0000 UTCI'll absolutely listen to and enjoy whatever they make, but if this is going where lots of us assume it is, Pathfinder feels like a step in the wrong direction to me. Absolutely nothing against the game or people who play it, but for a show like NADDPOD you want less crunch, not more. If they're seriously looking at other options I'd be more excited about Savage Worlds (and I'd be interested to see what Powergaming Emily makes of a system with no classes where character advancement is totally open) or PBTA.

( https://minedit.com/pathfinder-2e-pdf/ ) It's nearly 600 pages, but like Emily says the actual rules are less than 40 pages and the rest is content. Admittedly, reading the rules isn't a very engaging way to expose yourself to a new system. I can't think of any podcasts or anything that use it...

So often, the thematic or bare bones premise of a game is presented, which lacks the deep-dive into what makes individual rules beneficial and detrimental. Both the in-depth analysis of what the rules MEAN for the game system alongside the question-response format with the rest of the NADDPOD crew make for a far more interesting understanding of the reasons to spring for or avoid a different game (system). Maybe I should think about coming up with similar pitches for reviewing or suggesting board games. Anyways, I write all this to say, thank you Emily! Allow me to add on to the pile of positive feedback you've been receiving!

2023-01-22 18:16:44 +0000 UTCWas inspired by this and the main ep to have a look at the core rulebook (I'd be keen to see both more Behind the Screens and also Pathfinder one shots!), and re nat 20s found this on page 10: "You also often score a critical success by rolling a 20 on the die when attempting a check (before adding anything). Likewise, rolling a 1 on the dice when attempting a check often results in a critical failure" That's literally as far as I read though, so don't know how that would look in practice. Maybe best of both worlds though?

I think some of the wilder ideas (jamming something in the crocodiles mouth) are not covered by existing rules. I run a lot of games for kids, who are similarly creative, and some DM fiat will probably be required. The system -is- structured to enable it (e.g. any skill/class ability/etc can be used to do anything). So you could use your cooking lore check to try to neutralize a poison (skill vs dc) and it would work in the rules. But the DM has to say it would work (absent some skill feat I’m not aware of).

For example, if your bonus to attack is high and normally you hit with most attacks but you rolled a nat 1 this reduces the normal hit to a miss. If you roll an attack that missed but you rolled a nat 20 this would make the attack hit. If you roll for a strike and get 10 over their AC this would be a crit, but if you rolled a nat 1 this crit would now turn into a normal hit.

Later I picked up 5th edition as a way to play with people new to TTRPGs and of course we have a lot of fun, but the way that Pathfinder 2.0 was described to me originally as it came out seemed like it would be a major hurdle to learn, so I had never picked it up because what I had was "Good enough". Your presentation on how PF 2 worked, and the characters that you guys created... It instantly brought back that feeling of creativity and crunchy fun that I'd forgotten Pathfinder gave me. I am absolutely going to be picking up some books on this ruleset, and I would love so much to see these three characters brought to life with the hilarious, earnest soul that you all are so good at creating, and I'd also love to learn the rules of the game alongside you all. I've seen online discussions on the two systems, I've seen YouTube videos describing 2.0, none of that brought me around to the idea of switching systems the way that you guys excitedly chatting about mechanics and characters did.

The main feed episode this week sparked my interest, but after hearing the character creations on the short rest, I was sold and ended up getting the PF2e beginner's box. I'm a lazy GM and don't like to change things, but Emily's (and everyone else's) excitement was contagious and her explanations were very easy to understand. I've also played SW5e a few times as well and those comparisons helped a ton. Thank you 2 Crew for inspiring this set-in-their-ways GM to try something new!

Seeing Emily's system mastery in a system like pathfinder would be incredible and pathfinder really makes DMing so much easier in my experience in how creative you can be while not having to wing it on balance like CR often makes you do. Also the system has such strong support for making good fighters and weird little guys so it really caters to Caldwell and Jake. :D

I cannot recommend the short pre-written module called “We Be Goblins” it’s a pathfinder module that goes over the goblin lore, there’s a wedding to cause chaos at, and of course a myriad of fights! It’s a perfect dip into the game but doesn’t take long :) we played it as our first try at 2e and now we’ve been converted for 2 years.

I will say the math is super tight in pf2e, so a bitter pill for me was the little +1 or +2s feeling a little deflating. But they make a lot more sense when you remember that it's also an increased chance to crit! Also it would be incredible to see Wilmer getting Dubious Knowledge for some monster facts.

I've only played a small amount of Pathfinder 1e (but have a pretty high level experience with other TTRPGs) but wanted to share a couple impressions. Hearing that it the intentionality of the system was being to not have to multiclass was a revelation. The little bit I've played seems to give the power gamer (not a pejorative) a ton of resources. Groups I've been in have really been satisfying for the more mathy gamers I know.

2023-01-19 19:40:16 +0000 UTCIt will be nice to see pathfinder approached by comedians. My experience with pathfinder was with a bunch of crunchy rules lawyers and it felt like living through all the cases in dungeon court but without the much deserved punishments.
