Obviously this episode came out forever ago so no guarantee the DM/players of this case would see this, but last year my sister started getting extremely tired and began having somewhat irrational mood swings (nothing crazy, but she’d be annoyed or mad about something that wouldn’t normally bug her) and it turned out to be a brain tumour. Obviously not everything is always worst case scenario but I’d be concerned if I was the sleepy players friends - it’s always better to get it checked out if it seems like it could be a health problem.

it's not that hard to flavor the mobile feat to allow for like, special shoes or whatever I feel like specifically taking mobile makes it fine because they're trading leveling out a downside for taking something additive the same way you might use a skill point to raise a negative stat rather than increase a positive stat even more

The Thief Rogue's second story work feature would allow for the climbing centaur build, RAW.

Because it says a climb that takes hands and feet to climb in the description, a check would make perfect sense for allowing them to find spots to not use their hands as they head upward

Not sure if it was said about the centaur issue, but "4 extra feet instead of the normal 1extra foot" means that you would move at 1/5** walking speed, not 1/4 (i.e. 5 total per foot instead of 2 total per foot). Either way the centaur is straight wildin

I used to work two jobs 80 hrs a week and would frequently fall asleep at the table during our once a week DND session, but my husband and friends knew to prod me awake, or if I was too far gone to pay attention they would prompt me for rolls when needed, but I refused to leave the table or let them call it early, it was my one escape of the week

Oooh DM here with sleeping player idea!
for sleeping players I have a personal solution that my players actually look forward to
If a player either can’t make it last second while the others are on call or falls asleep I do what I call “dream sessions” caused by inhailing Kobald bone dust on the wind which is hallucinogenic and causes a shared trip if people smell the same bone so they have a crazy adventure in a messed up dream world where they have their classes and abilities switched to be as different as possible, the demon hexblade warlock turns into a dorito infused paladin and the wild magic barbarian becomes a bard as an example then they fight things like zombie versions of my homebrew creatures or just objects made giant and into zombies

Sure, its boring, but lets not act like it doesn't matter. Also the fact that it's not surprising that WoTC is evil and stupid has no bearing on the importance of the conversation.

Once WOTC makes some official statement on the OGL 1.1 bullshit, can we please have an episode discussing it? I know ultimately you guys could pivot away from DnD pretty easily and its not going to ruin anything, I just want to hear from you guys what you are thinking.

Interesting. I was going to counter that Centaur is more specific than speed rules, so specific trumps general. BUT Equine build says "instead of the normal 1", which would fold it fully into the part of the climbing rule that climb speed negates. Looks like Caldwell was the most Raw though, as the climbing rule grants DM discretion to require an Athletics check for certain surfaces.

My centaur swarmkeeper Phae recently was turned into a homebrew drider broodmother due to shenanigans with a hag and her demon bestie. Genuinely excited to not deal with the climbing issues anymore. We got caught up at the bottom of one too many cliffsides. Unfortunately her magic horseshoes (+30 ft walking speed) dont work on her spider legs

2023-01-10 16:15:35 +0000 UTC
So wait, even more RAW, the centaur equine build only takes effect based on regular climbing, on creatures without a climb speed. Since Roving grants a climb speed, it doesn't actually take effect, and the Centaur can sprint straight up a mountain.

The hoofs aren't what make goats great climbers, its their body shape, their sense of balance, their incredible eyesight, and exceptional cognition including hyper awareness of space and shape. Deer have the same hooves but are terrible at climbing because their haunches are too big, they have terrible eyesight, and they are notorious dumb dumbs. Humanoid eyes and ranger training may be able to help on some of those, but those deer haunches and human shoulders would push your center of gravity too far out from the cliff face to get very far. The arms and hands might even hurt more than they help. Even a full Goataur would probably suck at climbing because of the shoulders.

My online group plays until 1-2am pretty frequently - most of us are parents with kids so we fail our CON Saves and pass out every now and then. We just play through it, find a stopping point if it’s late, and razz whoever is snoring over the mic the next day in discord. No biggie

Even when a bird is shot dead in the sky it usually doesn't fall straight to the ground. Those wings just want to glide. Being incapacitated probably calls for full falling damage anyway just to keep things tense, and full falling damage makes sense for restrained too since those wings are folded up, but falling damage on a non-magic flyer being knocked prone, grappled, or otherwise having its movement reduced to zero should be reduced in some way.

Communication is the problem not the sleeping imo.
I can't help my bouts of sleep, but my DM & party know. They give me my 20 when I fall asleep, then wake me up, recap & I'm back at it.
I want to stay up, but sadly it's a disorder 🥺

I think the key with the centaur is the “hands” part. I say the centaur _can_ climb the steep mountain like a goat can, with no penalty — but climbing a castle wall or sheer cliff face incurs the penalty.

While I'd agree that the ranger centaur is a weird combination, I'd suggest the following: Since the climb rules halve your movement speed, the Centaur climb rules quarter it, and the Ranger movement adjusts a standard biped back to normal(aka *2 their normal climb speed), there's an obvious mathematical solution. Just assume that the rules for Ranger climb speed double your normal result.
This means that your Centaur Ranger climbs at 1/4 speed*2. AKA half their normal speed. This provides them an advantage for their class/race selection while not breaking/invalidating the movement options for other characters.

I want to understand the situation where the 84 foot/round climbing isn’t enough. Unless they’re on your back, the rest of your party isn’t coming with you at that speed, and if you’re not in combat etc. I struggle to understand when you need to move a third of the speed of sound up a cliff instead of 84 ft.

I was the one who submitted the centaur question, and my player is already calling for a no contest because I didn't specify that she is a deer variant centaur. Deer and goats have the same types of hoof, hence the argument 😂 Thanks a lot for arbitration, it gave me and the players a ton of laughs!

2023-01-08 01:05:35 +0000 UTC
My take on the climbing is that Emily's point "they put resources into this, so we should let it happen" is forgetting the fact that their resources allow a movement speed of 84 goddamn feet up a wall as a horse, compared to their normal max of 10. Their resources have already bought them something fucking insane.

Goat centaurs is also a conclusion my table came to. Imagine these rangers scaling cliffs at 60 degree inclines and pelting foes with arrows from insane angles.

Man this episode is a rollercoaster. I fell asleep at the dnd game i had been to excited for to sleep the night before and missed the battle against the big bad who my character was after. I was so scared one of these were about me. loved the "check in with your friend" comment also the "draw on them" comments, these made my anxiety feel so much better knowing the average 2 crew member thinks there are ok reasons for this to happen lol.
Edit: Also the answer to what to do with the evil relic is always lick it. I have had 2 pc die in my rp life due to licking random objects. people know when i am playing, if we talk for to long i might lick something

When I started playing D&D, I was 11 and my parents would play with my uncles and 2 older siblings. Those kids could hang and I could not. In game, they turned me into an orb that randomly hung over someone's head and it was just a normal thing for them to have 11 year old me's PC hanging over their head. But also...I was 11. Who just walks off in their friend's house, while playing an rpg, and goes to bed?

2023-01-07 01:16:41 +0000 UTC
Heads up! The The Centaur player is actually RAW correct that Roving negates Equine Build. Equine Build states that it takes 4 extra feet of movement instead of 1 extra feet. However, if you have a climb speed you don’t spend a foot of extra movement, therefore a centaur doesn’t spend 4 extra feet of movement.

Just to give a generous read on top of your already generous read: until I got diagnosed with ADHD last year, I would also become extremely sleepy very quickly. It didn't come up in social situations for me, but I can absolutely sympathise with someone getting so tired they have to excuse themselves, trying to 'just rest their eyes' and ending up passing out, then waking up and being kind of pissed because you can't accept that it was your 'fault' because you were just tired when you know damn well you slept enough for it not to be an issue* (*if you were a 'normal' person). The lack of engagement is another thing though and admittedly it does kind of make it seem like they just weren't that invested in the game.

So glad this is starting the new year! Also that AI bot you are looking for is called Chat GPT! It is awesome! You can search it up and make an account for it! It's free and really easy to do! An AI written one shot sounds like an AMAZING live show! Simply put Chat GPT on a screen up top for the audience to see! I think this might take some coordination but is definitely something I would attend for SURE!
