Emily bringing up star wars 5e in this ep just made me sad that they didn't use Starfinder for Starstruck Odyssey again

Blue Bee

STORMLIGHT ARCHIVE MENTIONED RAAAAA 🔥🔥🔥

Ben

"Shellooooo, is it meeeee you're lookin for" my favorite line of 2023 🤣

Jackson Roth

Omg yesssss ss Stormlight reference!!!

Lilybet Gates

Is the weather table even homebrew? I feel like I've seen a chart about it in the DMG, and it's certainly already a part of the "Tomb of Annihilation" module.

Gearbox

It's been mentioned that swapping abilities for skills is RAW, but also if you want a bit more nuance (like the Moonshine / Crick example) just give proficiency to specific checks when it makes sense. If they have proficiency perhaps double it for that check. So for the Moonshine example you could give her proficiency in persuasion (or even expertise) and swap Wisdom for Charisma (if say she's using her understanding of the world or something)

Dalton Davidson

Y'all should play pathfinder, absolutely nuts on skills feats and customization and CRUNCH

Vie.

I think I remember reading something about a new "tragedy bard" subclass that has a last stand feature

Nathaniel Thomas

Loved the SW5e shout outs in this episode guys!

Tegan J Gaming

Pathfinder 2e!!!! It’s 3.5 with refinements and balance updats

Andrew

PSA: swapping abilities for skills check is not homebrew, it’s in the players handbook. I also hope naddpod won’t switch to 3.5, I played it and I remember it overly complicated, it’d be hard to follow. Complexity usually caters for lack of creativity of the table, which clearly isn’t a problem for the podcast!

Peter S.

Loved the Stormlight shout!! Woo!!!

Will J

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, if they want to keep things crunchy like 3.5 Pathfinder is the way to go.

Garga Lenoir

god I miss ADnD attribute charts, tho Open Doors on the strength chart sort of implied every door in the world is the exact same

Summer Tribe

I await the recipe to Balnor’s Tuna Sandwich.

Lorne Mintz

Come to Atlanta Ga again!!!

Petmygoldfish

Would love to hear y'all play 3.5! I have always wanted to try it out so that might push me over the edge

Ted Orbach

AD&D 2nd ed had an add-on called skills and powers I think that actually split the main stats into 2 sub stats. So for charisma it was split into looks and personality. One could be higher than the other, so you could be beautiful in looks but very poor in talking to people. It was interesting

Keith robinson

If you want to go to 3.5, you really, really ought to just head over to Pathfinder. It's a rebalanced (and still supported) offshoot of 3.5 that had its heyday when 4e shat the bed. It has all the crunch of 3.5, but fixes most of the WILDLY broken combos (look up "locate city nuke"). It's lovingly referred to as "D&D 3.75" and is definitely, DEFINITELY a cleaner player and DM experience.

Bent Vent

I’m pretty sure the DMs guide says that players can use an alternative stat for a roll. I think the example given is a barbarian using strength for an intimidation. It is addressed in the guide RAW. Edit: it is actually the PHB page 175.

DT

Another awesome concept that could probably be a podcast all on its own. Thanks NADDPOD crew

Brian Tatosky

I think the cover your party member mechanic would also make more sense if its something everyone can have as opposed to just the barbarian/fighter. otherwise, like they were saying, it makes more sense to use the sw5e

Aiyana

I second Pathfinder, if you want to recapture the feel of 3.5 but with a LOT of the little dead levels and wonky rules streamlined. Now If you wanna get a really crunchy game, look at some d% games, like the Fallout PnP.

Matthew Nardozza

This is awesome. Love the turtle tank. Jasper is a real cool turdude

The Diced Apple

Jake and Jasper are Drift Compatible confirmed

Randy

Humming your own outros made me chortle😂

Decker Ames

I definitely feel the desire for more variety in attributes. In the game I wrote there are 9 different attributes and the stuff that Charisma is burdened with in D&D is covered by Charm, Cunning, Spirit, and Threat.

J. Marshall Smith

I think having the DM give inspiration and/or advantage in certain situations can help with the lack of nuance in 5e's skill checks! If your barbarian has low charisma but is in a situation where they should be someone people listen to, the DM giving you a d8 of inspiration can really boost your roll and account for that situational exception.

Nour

For the Adrenaline shot homebrew, that HP boost has GOTTA scale imo. I like to think back to any fight I've seen from any dnd show with PC's above level 10 where 20hp wouldn't be enough. Other than that, I'm fully ripping the "Decaying Death Saves" thing...

NoShitSherlock

Yup, it is in the Ability Checks section of phb chapter 7: Using Ability Scores as a variant rule. In fact the exact situation they brought up of a barbarian using Str for intimidation is one of the examples given

Janaga

Not every Barbarian has low Charisma!

Garrett Morrow

Yeah I was coming here to say that isn't even homebrew it's a rule variant for exactly the reason they mentioned

Max Cooper

yeah something like advanced 5e or 5.5 would be a welcome change

Travis Perkins

The skill redux reminds me of how Elder Scrolls games went from having 8 attributes and 27 skills in Morrowind to 21 skills in Oblivion to no attributes and 18 skills in Skyrim. The simpler system is more approachable for new players but a bit of flavor or personality is lost when you give up the complexity

Steven S

Jake, I accept your offer to replace you as CEO of HeadGum. Have the keys to the company scooter on your - sorry, my - desk by 9 am EST on Monday.

Mama Hot Tomato

Can’t you already sub skill bases for your proficiencies if it makes sense (eg. str intimidation)? I could be wrong but I thought this was already in the rules. Love the content!

Solomon Korringa

Loved the person who just pitched a fully new game. Loved it.

thiswayjose

We still need that critter country update though!!

Allan Levy

I accept my fate in the hostile takeover, I hope that I don’t get slowly pushed out over time. Also shout out Three Body Problem, great book! It’s where I learned about the three body problem and got super interested in it

Alex W

Boy would I love to hear Murph and the others talk more about stormlight archive or the cosmere in general Also that episode was dope as hell. I always think of a single comment i think worth sharing and forget how weird it looks to see a loose comment requesting something with no reference to what they heard...

Anthony Abreu

The thing Jasper mentioned (using different abilities for skills checks) is in the Players Hand Book. It's a variant rule but it does exist!

BassToad

AHHHHHHHHHHHthanksforreadingmine<3HHHHHHHHHHH

Mattie Honda

I think the reason I like the simpler systems so much is that you just simply don't need to roll for good roleplay. Like if you're rolling it's dangerous. I kind of always hated moments that someone says they do something so obvious and dms then require a roll. As a game it's more about player intelligence than character intelligence Pathfinder is a nice alternative to 3.5 also. It streamlined that. But B/X is probably the best. Everything up through 2e is pretty similar when you leave off the optional rules.

Declan Konesky

Cowabunga it is

Ro Si

🤘🐢 shell yeah babyyyy

Conner Christensen

Using your offspring as a bartering system is insane. I love it.
