We have a fully grown sulcata (the tortoise in your picture) at home. My wife bought him as a hatchling in 1998 and at the time he fit inside one of her 8yo hands. Now he weighs 154lbs and is 31" long. We live in the Midwest and in order to take care of him in the winters we built a 12'x12' four-season sunroom off of my wife's office and installed a stand-by generator for power-loss conditions. We love him, but I absolutely do not recommend anyone buying them in the north unless they are *fully* prepared to build a huge, heated, UV producing enclosure capable of housing an intelligent, mobile boulder.

Just FYI, Florida recently passed a law that iguanas could no longer be kept as pets, it is illegal to take them from the wild and keep them. If you owned an iguana before 2021, your iguana is grandfathered into the law, but you have to have a permit. It is true that they will fall from trees when hibernating.

As a fun fact about the hand fins, one possible precursor was the McDonald's across from Waikiki beach where youths used to (and hopefully still do) steal the plastic trays, drill a hole and string through them, and use them to catch waves

Florida Frog Fun Facts: In Florida, we are encouraged to humanely euthanize Cuban Treefrogs by freezing them for 24 hours. They are an invasive species that threaten (and sometimes eat) our endemic tree frogs. Freezing frogs for 24 hours can kill them or put them in a permanent state of hibernation from which they won’t recover. Please do your research before freezing amphibians & reptiles because they might not wake back up again!
