This movie is such a generational litmus test. You know that clip that just went viral where Amy Poehler discusses each generation and it's: "Boomers are all about the money, GenX is like 'is it all about the money?', Millennials are 'where is the money?' and GenZ is 'what money??'" People's reading of Nate in this movie is very symptomatic of the times and the moment when you look at it. The story is written by GenXers, who quite clearly want Nate to be the "don't become a sellout to the mainstream" voice. A very grunge inner conflict was selling too many records to remain authentic! The economy was good, jobs actually offered such long contracts that people fretted about being "tied down", but after the greed of the '80s, the value was in remaining true to yourself and being creative. But by the time DWP opened, the financial crisis and housing bubble burst were barely a year away, so Millennials were stressing about trying to make a living in suddenly difficult times, and they reframed all these movies as "wtf? asking her to reject one of the few opportunities left to make money and have a stable job is loser behavior!" (see also, Ethan Hawke vs Ben Stiller in Reality Bites). But now it gets interesting! Because we're back to "working for mainstream companies is selling your soul", except this time, for GenZers, the problem is that nobody can make any money anyway, and companies are so exploitive and demand so much from you for so little, that trying to "make it" in your job is a fool's errand, and finding something you're passionate about is where it's at. The movie walks that fine line really well, and that's why people's opinion about Nate changes every ten years! (And now I wonder if the opinions about Reality Bites have also changed again.)
