Much like with The Witch, we recorded this one before Patreon was a thing so there are quite a few pauses in this one. I did cut some out that didn't offer much, just to keep the flow of the movie going. As we go forward though the reactions we record should be a lot more optimised for Patreon!

2025-06-16 22:52:25 +0000 UTCAlso, I got to the question of "what does the Indiana Jones prelude mean?" and Dan is right about Babylon, but basically it's a reaction to the hippie interest in Eastern and pagan religions at the time. The idea is "look! these ~foreign~ ideas are corrupting your innocent daughters!!". This couldn't just be a random antique she found on a perfectly white suburban attic, because this is such a stealthily conservative movie!!

2025-03-26 21:15:36 +0000 UTCAn oldie but a goodie! This movie was so legendarily scary when I was a teen, that I never watched it until I was in my 30s, and... I was so struck by how much this is just a puberty allegory! It's all about a mother who wakes up one day to find that her sweet, meek, obedient and polite little girl suddenly no longer obeys her, she questions religion, she uses *swearwords*, she... masturbates (😱😱)! Her skin is a mess, she has new gross bodily functions, she won't leave her room, she embarrasses her mother in front of the visits! She's angry and pushes back against authority!! It for sure *must* be a demon, because her sweet little child would never! That and also, of course, it can't be the '60s sociopolitical awareness, it for sure must be some evil supernatural thing! That must be it! There's no way a 13 year old girl exploding with hormones at the peak of a social revolution would behave that way on her own!
