Thanks for the references. Fwiw, I've been reading "Late Capitalism" and was struck by Mandel's argument that the acceleration of the reproduction of fixed capital under late capitalism creates strong incentives for corporations to plan, not just within the firm but also outside, by stabilizing demand and minimizing conjunctural fluctuations. Doing so requires heavy state involvement, of course. Not sure how that relates to the debt issue, but at any rate it suggests that the emphasis on stability might also be connected to changes in the production process.
