With regard to the COVID hysteria, I recommend Scott Atlas' "A Plague Upon Our House" and Alex Berenson's "Pandemia," which both present good summaries of the evolving state of knowledge in the early days of the pandemic. Their accounts, at any rate, make it sound like there were good grounds for being skeptical of the catastrophist narrative right from the beginning (i.e. before Ioannidis' April article on fatality rates), but the hysteria fuelled by the various key players made it extremely difficult to take a critical attitude towards what was going on.
