The Land Down Under

Comments

A number of sources have talked about the phenomenon of wester affluent professional middle class voting increasingly for social democrats while working class people continue to either abstaine or vote for the conservative or far-right. What is being said is that this opens the door for a populist Trumpian figure. The Aus Liberals that just lost the election seem to have grabbed on to this and are now claiming they will target the more working class seats and the 'forgotten Australians'. The Nationals who are in a coalition with the Liberals held all their seats and even increased their votes in some places. I don't expect the Coalition to do too well with the new strategy but only time will tell. Do you this this is a possibility for Aus that a populist right wave now has an opening? Here is a piece in Unherd that touches on this https://unherd.com/2022/05/australian-labors-hollow-victory/
