Reading Group March: Participation and Democratic Theory
Added 2022-03-04 18:29:31 +0000 UTCDemocracy. You've heard of it. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Wars are fought over it.
But what is democracy anyways?
We are going to reading chapters of Carole Pateman's book which examines the idea of democracy from a liberal point of view, and how to extend this concept to its fullest given the constraints of class society. This reading group should be useful for anyone with an interest on practical applications of "democracy" in our current context (insomuch as this is possible). While the book does not approach the problem through a Marxist lens, we will be reviewing a chapter on workers' self-management in Yugoslavia.
Chapters to be covered:
Chapter 1: Recent theories of democracy and the 'classical myth'
Chapter 2: Rousseau, John Stuart Mill and G. D. H. Cole: a participatory theory of democracy
Chapter 5: Workers' self-management in Yugoslavia
There is no public access to this book, unfortunately.
However, if you haven't heard of b-ok [dot] cc maybe it's time to check it out.
