Trainhopping across Europe | Part 5

Part 5 of the Europe journey. For me, this was one of the most interesting parts of the journey. After a twelve-hour stop in Arad, the train finally continued it's journey towards Simeria, driving through the Transylvanian hills and valleys. The journey took a while because the train stopped a lot, but after 15 hours we arrived at our destination, the city of Simeria.

We went to a Kiosk to buy some supplies, and there we met Sebas, a citizen of Simeria, who also loved to travel. We talked with him and after a while, more and more people started to join, all that at 4 in the night on a Wednesday. One of the people there was Jakub, a Romanian truck driver who spoke a bit of English. He said that he felt bad that we would have sleep in the woods, and offered us to stay at his place.

When we came to his apartment, we noticed that his family was living there, which was a bit strange for us but they were all very welcoming. We could sleep a bit, and when we woke up Jakub was already cooking food for us. It surprised me how welcoming these people were, just letting strangers stay inside their house, giving them food, and trusting them with their family. I wanted to capture more of this, but Jakub didn't like to be filmed, so I respected that. We spent the day with him and got to know him and his family. In the evening we said goodbye and thanked him, then we continued our journey. Unfortunately, we didn't get lucky with the freights.

Nevertheless, it was an interesting train ride, especially the part from Romania to Bulgaria. It felt like we were driving through a post-apocalyptic world. 90% of what we saw along the tracks was abandoned. People were living in cars and trailers, with no running water or electricity. The train had cracks in the windows because people would throw rocks at it. It was so different from the rest of the European Union.

Then we crossed the border and everything returned to normal, Bulgaria is not a rich country, but it was alright. Especially the nature.

When we tried catching a freight there, it was less fun. All freights went to Serbia and not a single one went to Greece, that's why the video ends in Bulgaria. I need to make a new plan to reach the port of Thessaloniki. But I'm happy with the progress we already made.

I hope you will enjoy watching this video, and thanks for the support!
