Q&A: WW2 Aircraft & Engines

Round 2! Eng. Calum Douglas, author of The Secret Horsepower Race, and me will be doing another stream about aircraft engines during WW2 (see Part 1 above). Now is the time to ask questions which I will bundle up and prioritise during the stream. That's right, as Patreons you get to ask the first questions! Let me know in the comments what you would like to ask Calum.

Q&A: WW2 Aircraft & Engines

I have not hear of read anything bad about the licenced built Italian DB601 or 605's compared to say the Japanese 601 copy or even the German 605's themselves.* Have you or anyone else found anything on them? * I of course may be forgetful. It has been a while since I read your book and there may be stuff about them.

Given a number of advanced technical features in the Junkers Jumo engines (especially the 213) was there any sort of developmental and practical potential benefits the DB series engines over the Jumos?

Many Qs from me, if I'm only allowed one, I'd like it to be the first one :) And thank you, chris, for organizing such interesting interviews, I love this stuff! 1.) engine vs fuel, what had the bigger impact in what regard in terms of plane performance and what role did the supercharger had (just a force multiplier)? 2.) Does the perfect air intake (in context with the whole plane, least drag, best intake volume or other specifics(?)) exist and where do we find it or the one that is closest to perfection? 3.) Could the DB605 called the the axis counterpart of the rolls royce merlin? If yes, why, if no, why not? 4.) Were there ever DB605 engines built to a high quality standard and tested against the Merlin on "equal" terms (same fuel, same oil and so on)? If yes, what was the result and if no, because of jet engines? 5.) The BMW 801 was sometimes installed in a "Kraftei" configuration (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power-egg). To my knowledge the US didn't make use of this concept despite it beeing an efficient scheme, able for mass manufactoring. Do you know why? 6.) With hindsight: what were the (top 3?) most valuable lessons learned on the allied/us side in terms of engine design after ww2 (with support of the outcome of operation paperclip maybe?)?

How has the book and your research been received by those outside of the military history community? I.E engineers, mechanics, etc.
