Live Q&A: Pre-submit your questions

Towards the end of April I will be hosting Calum Douglas, author of The Secret Horsepower Race, in a live streamed Q&A. If you have burning questions on WW2 areo-engines, presubmit them here ahead of everyone else!

P.S see the pictures for a Table of Contents and Index if you want inspiration and an overall idea of the books content.

engine vs fuel, what had the bigger impact in what regard in terms of plane performance and what role did the supercharger had (just a force multiplier)?

Reichsbierminister

The merlin sounds glorious, so how important were exhaust characteristics to the performance developments.

What was the Octane values the Germans produced during the war? Might as well include all nations if availble.

Joe Kudrna

What unexpected fact or opinion did you take away from researching and learning about the development of these engines and those who made them?

Nicholas Mew

Assuming the Germans managed to implement proper timely workarounds to material shortages and avoided the development policies they committed, how much more potent would the Luftwaffe fighter force have been?

Nicholas Mew

Was there any merit to developing the BMW-801 or were the Germans better of focusing on V-12's?

Nicholas Mew

Why was the German Aeroengine development (and other related areas) so fractious and mismanaged as it was?

Nicholas Mew

Why did Europe go with V-12, mostly water cooled (there was a few air) when there was some some Radial engines. Was it simply the belief radial had too much drag? While Japan almost entirely go (air cooled) radial, was it same reason the USN went air cooled radial because easier to maintain?

Joe Kudrna

The obvious is more horsepower equals a better aircraft. There must be a environmental constant which is a barrier to performance? At some point a spinning propeller must reach an rpm and blade angle where any faster makes no performance improvement.

Frank C

Why did the British did not want to make the switch over to fuel injection?

Jim Smitty
