Early Access: The Schweinfurt Disaster

Here it is, the next episode! This time I will have an in-depth look at why the Schweinfurt raids (and the associated disaster leading to the loss of +140 bombers) was inevitable. I will take a look at the shaping and development of US Army Air Corps (then Army Air Force) doctrine and how this caused a path-dependency on to Schweinfurt.

This video is also sponsored by the Naval Institute Press - with the customary exclusive 25% discount on their whole book line with the code MILAVHIS at https://www.usni.org/press/books

Thank you, Chris. I had barely heard about the Schweinfurt raids before this video. I had heard that World War 2 strategic bombing was not very effective, except for drawing Axis fighter assets away from frontline use.

When I was in elementary school, I read Black Thursday by Martin Caiden. It was my introduction to the Schweinfurt raids.

Any 8th AF or Bomber Command vid is most welcome.

Whenever a "master plan" fails, the first call is always "Well, you didn't do it right." There is just too much emotional & institutional capital invested in the plan to look too closely at the plan itself. I'd say this is true for all plans, not just military master plans. I have no solution to offer. Good episode, thanks for all the reading and work you put into it....your master plan succeeded :-) I also chuckled at the mini-me-objector -you in the background :-))

Thnx! :)
