Yes, about 40 Hs 123 were available, and yes CAS was essentially neglected at the start of the war. The experiences showed that it was needed but since the Hs 129 was in development, this was supposed to cover that demand. When it couldn't, fighter-bombers were put into that role.

Would you say that German focus on the Stuka & dive bombing for operational interdiction left them with almost no close air support capabilities? If my memory doesn’t fail me the Luftwaffe just deployed around 40 Hs 123 for Poland and France and the Hs 123, although quite sturdy and well liked by their pilots, can be described as a modern machine.

i think its a combination of not having the same amount of aircraft combined with the how stupidly wide the eastern front was

Alex Ravn

Thank you for answering my question on the dive recovery system. Junkers really were thinking outside the box on it.

Robert Santamaria

Thanks, Chris, for another wonderfully educational and interesting video. I am going to ask comics artist Donna Barr if she's interested in a copy of the book. One of her main characters, in her "Desert Peach" series was a Stuka pilot, and she illustrated what happened when a Spitfire pilot made the mistake of tailing a stuka, through a series of very tight, high-wing-load turns, instead of using some variation on the "yo-yo" climb-and-dive attack.

Bill Lemmond

thank you! This was very interesting, I very much enjoyed it. Are you collecting ideas/wishes for videos?

Reichsbierminister

Tnanks for addressing my question regarding operation of the Stuka in an environment without air superiority/supremacy. I found your description of the environment on the Eastern Front surprising, because I'd always assumed that the Soviets controlled the air later in the war as the Allies did in the West. I guess they simply didn't have the number of aircraft as the Allies did.

As for the name ... I have long gotten into the habit of creating random account names along with with random passwords for all accounts. I did not realize the Patreon account name would also be my public handle :)

Scarecrow Repair

Thanks for the answer, especially concerning finding and identifying targets from a lower altitude.

Once again congratulations on the continuing success of the book. I guess the next book will be a bigger one. Which I'll have to push to be the number 1 supporter of again.

Thanks. I'm not really an Aircraft person ( But I am glad to be a Patron) I still enjoyed your QA I hope you can do similar QAs more often. I'm sure the Stuka will generate more questions.
