UPDATE Early Access May: Japanese Bf-109, Luftwaffe ASW and USS Hornet

>>> UPDATED: Link Added for The Flight to Nowhere

Hey,

Here is the May round up for your Early Access. Two videos are already out and you can watch them by clicking on the titles below. Looking forward to all your comments and feedback, let me know what you think!

Japanese Opinion on the Bf-109 - 13th May
In 1941, the Japanese Army Air Service conducted a series of simulated dogfights with the Ki-27, Ki-44 and Ki-60 vs a German Bf 109. Viewer and supporter QAZ did a fantastic translation of a lot of Japanese information on this event and as such, I'll be able to tell you exactly what the Japanese thought of the Bf 109...and their own planes.

The Flight to Nowhere - 20th May
I moved this video back one week to complete it with a bit more peace. It's a large project and would benefit from some more time and should be available in early access at the end of the month. This video will shed light on the disastrous non-intervention of USS Hornet during the Battle of Midway. Of its strike package of VS, VB and VT aircraft, only VT-8 made contact with the Japanese fleet - and paid the price. How come Hornet never got to take their shot at Kaga, Agaki and co? This video will explain this in detail with some fantastic visuals provided by Task Force Admiral.

Luftwaffe Anti-Submarine Warfare - 27th May
Another find from the German Military Archive. This is an indepth look at a Luftwaffe instructional pamphlet, explaining to pilots how to engage submarines and protect convoys. Germany might not be popularily known to be at the receiving end of Allied submarines - the Kriegsmarine's U-Boots have their own reputation of course - but that is exactly why I think this would be so interesting.

Thank you for the support,
Chris

I found very interesting that the Japanese weren’t using the “finger four” formation by 1941. That could have been the most important contribution by the German air attaché/ test pilot.

Chris, Just watched the newly linked version and it's missing your traditional sign off "and as always, thank you very much, have a great day and see you in the sky". Instead we get "and as always...." video ends.

The Zero was from the Japanese Imperial Navy, so the Army just compared it to their own aircraft. I know that doesn't fully answer it, but I imagine that unless the Navy was interested, it would not have happened.

Great video, Bismarck. This might be a dumb question but why didn’t they compare it to the zero?

Hey Dave, thanks so much for pointing that out. I must have linked the wrong version, it is updated now!

Military Aviation History

Luftwaffe ASW was an interesting tangent.

Is the Bf-109 video the final version? There are a few things that make it look like it may not be: - Starting at 9:51, the title card reads "something something". - There is no audio starting at that point, while list of tests flown are shown on screen. This lasts up through the next title card at 10:13, "Bf-109 vs Ki-27".

Terrific thanks - looking forward to these! Paul
